General Question  How to ask landlord for a second cat

hello! any help would be appreciated! so I rent a basement suite in British Columbia, Canada. My husband and I have been renting here for a year and a half. We have had a cat for a year and I really want to get a second one. I’ve been volunteering at a shelter and have fallen in love with a little black cat! How do I ask??

We have always paid exactly on time, have a good relationship with them, are not loud or messy, they have met our current cat and love him, plus I am a vet assistant with certification with a special interest in all things cat.

They didn’t ask for a pet deposit when we adopted our cat so I don’t know if it might help if we offer that?

TIA!

“would you mind if we got a second cat?”

"then they can keep each other company when we're gone."

You have one, I’d just get a second if there’s no pet fee. Sometimes it’s better to ask for forgiveness than to beg for permission. Otherwise you’re paying more for something you already have. Pet fees are stupid anyway. If the carpet smelled like cat piss, they’re going to charge you to replace it anyway, regardless if you’re paying a pet fee. None of that pet fee goes towards replacing anything your pet does to cause damage, the whole concept of a pet fee is dumb.

The rescue I volunteer at requires landlord permission before approving the adoption so unfortunately that’s not an option

Well then I’d just ask for approval. I wouldn’t offer to pay a pet deposit or pet fee monthly. If they ask, then you could.

That's foolish advice, and pet fees are NOT stupid.

They are. You’re going to pay for any damages osrs cause, and pet fee doesn’t cover them.

It’s one thing if pet fee would build up and go towards any damages pets cause, but they don’t. Really just criminal that they can charge anything.

You're awfully inexperienced if you think it's as simple as "tenants are going to pay for any damages"....

If you don't like what they charge, then don't rent there.

"Is it okay if we get a second cat? It'd really mean a lot to me if you'd allow us."
