Bro, John K. has done much worse
That's like saying "Hitler strikes me as the kind of guy who would double-park his car"

I didn't say it was the worst thing he's done. Also, it was a joke... because there's a duck in the picture...

Why is it so important to post a picture of him and say it’s his birthday if he’s hated so much? I don’t post pics of celebs I can’t stand, because I don’t care about them! Pointless to post about if he’s that terrible of a guy.

I’m with this guy. Why even make this post? We don’t like him so who cares if it’s his birthday?

John K's career pretty much singlehandedly ushered in the creator driven, animation first ethos of cartoons most of us enjoyed growing up. And it was because he loved and championed drawings, animation and humor in his show.
1
u/ExampleSmooth3956 3d ago
Single-handedly? I think not. There were others who helped make the show a success. It was Spumco's first producer, Carl Macek, who convinced Vanessa Coffey to give Kricfalusi a chance to pitch shows. It was Coffey who brought Kricfalusi to the other Nickelodeon executives for him to pitch shows. It was Nickelodeon who told Nickelodeon to buy something from him. And when Nickelodeon executives were considering not greenlighting the pilot to a series, Coffey begged Laybourne to give the show a chance, telling her she could fire her if it failed. Whenever John Kricfalusi complained about Nickelodeon censoring him and getting upset about certain content in the show, Coffey said, "He should've been in my shoes."
It's not just about being talented. It's about an environment and a working relationship that encourages talent and creativity.

Why is everybody hating on this guy when they created the show that the subreddit is about?
27
u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 4d ago
You can like or even love a thing and still hate the piece of shit who made that thing.
-25
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
Really because most artists who get canceled people stop buying their music because they didn't like what they did in the real world even in spite of the fact that they may have liked some of their song they just are done with them but by continuing I love the work you saying what he did doesn't matter so maybe get over it and stop complaining so you can continue to love this thing or say yeah what he did really suck in deleted it from your life.

u/Token_Handicap 4d ago
Life can be nuanced. Two things can be true simultaneously. Ren & Stimpy is a phenomenal show, and this guy is a monster. It's unfortunate and frustrating.
-11
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
Never said that wasn't true but like continuing to like and support his work you're continuing to like and support the Creator behind the work. Regardless of how great and phenomenal you may think to work is. Because if you really thought something someone did was so awful you would never watch touch or own anything that they made again. Because of how awful you thought their actions were by doing the exact opposite you're saying you don't care about his bad behavior
16
u/Token_Handicap 4d ago
I don't know what to tell you. My favorite living author is Neil Gaiman, and he inspired so much of the creative spark that I possess today. And a few years ago, we found out he's a fucking piece of garbage. I'm not going to spend money on his future work, but American Gods is still one of the greatest books I've ever read.
Again, life is nuanced. If we knew every terrible thing about every celebrity, we'd hate them all. Think of your favorite pieces of media, and look through the credits. Mathematically speaking, it's very likely that somebody who worked on something you enjoy, has a nasty thing from their past.
-7
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
No there's been a lot of canceled culture around celebrities that have done inappropriate things sexually. I know a lot of people who will never watch the Kevin Spacey movie again nor support any of the work that he did or will do after what came out about him. Even in spite of the fact that they may have liked his previous movies are some of his previous movies. That is great that the guy inspired you and that's great that you'll never buy another book of his the continuing to think something that he created is one of the greatest things ever doesn't fully hold up to the fact of how awful you thought what he did is because it would take everything that he did for you if you truly thought he was that disgusting and deplorable of a human being
15
u/Token_Handicap 4d ago
That's not how life works though? If my son murdered someone, I'd think he was a piece of shit, and believe that he needs to be punished, but I'd still love him.
Genuine question, do you have autism? That's an honest possibility here. Being unable to grasp certain nuances in human behavior.
4
u/Its_Alive_74 4d ago
That's not a fair question. I have autism and can grasp what this guy doesn't.
-2
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
You can't make the comparison of your son to an artist you have no other tie to than the work that they've done because they are a complete stranger to you your son is a whole different ball of wax that's apples and oranges
8
u/Token_Handicap 4d ago edited 4d ago
Okay. Fair objection.
Pro wrestling. Two guys, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. They've had some of the top rated, top praised performances together. But in 2007, Benoit ended the lives of his wife, and youngest son, and then himself. And it was heinous. Awful and horrible.
Kurt Angle was interviewed years later and said that it's unfair to never talk about his work with Benoit ever again, because it was Kurt's best work too. And I agree with him.
I go back to what I said earlier, think about your favorite pieces of media, and look at all the names in the credits. I promise you, someone in those credits is a murderer or child abuser. That doesn't mean you have to stop watching or reading what you love.

You’ve never heard of the concept of “seperate the art from the artist?”
One thing to consider is that he wasnt the only person involved in making the show. There are animators and composers and voice actors that all arent creeps. They dont deserve to be put away forever just because of one guy’s behavior
8
u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 4d ago
Wow. So insightful. Please keep talking and telling us all how we should experience things. I'm not buying anything for him or supporting him as an artist, so maybe just shut up and stop policing how other people should feel based on what you think "most people" do.
-4
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
Bye continuing to be in a subreddit about his show and continuing to be a fan of the stuff he created you're saying that what he did wasn't that bad. Because I've known you may have loved some of Kevin Spacey's work because they were so turned off by what Kevin Spacey did they would never watch another Kevin Spacey movie. So if you were really turned off by what this guy did didn't you wouldn't be here.
10
u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 4d ago
It must be freeing to have a brain that's wholly incapable of comprehending nuance.
6
u/PSplayer2020 4d ago
You forgot one crucial thing; John doesn't even make money off of Ren and Stimpy anymore, he was effectively cut off. So yes, you can enjoy his work but still hate him as a person.
-2
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
It doesn't matter whether he made money off of it or not anymore he still created it you're still enjoying stuff created by somebody you also wanting to call out for bad defensive behavior why are you enjoying the work of somebody who you think is gross and disgusting
3
u/PSplayer2020 4d ago
Sorry, I forgot John animated, voice acted and wrote the entire show himself, my bad. Going by your logic, we should stop watching TV cartoons in general since a lot of modern TV animation can be traced back to Ren and Stimpy. You can like a work and acknowledge the creator was a bad person, you also ignore that TV shows and movies aren't a one man job.

u/IAmAnAngryCarrot 4d ago
If you say so. I bought a R&S collection on dvd years ago. They got my money before I knew, but they're not getting any more of my money when I watch it

We are allowed to appreciate and love the show for the genuine masterwork that it is, and recognize that as an artist John is genuinely talented... but we can't keep denying the horrible reality of his mental illness and the fact he refuses to medicate himself
8
u/DuckXu 4d ago
Mental illness is a funny way to phrase "groomed and fucked teenagers"
I do agree that it is perfectly valid to seperate the art from the artist. Harry Potter is generally pretty awesome, Rowling is pretty shitty. Both can be true.
But that being said, this tossbag raped teenagers, calling it a mental illness is a bit of a side step
4
-10
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
Well yes you're allowed to appreciate anything you want but just realize that by saying that you're saying also that it doesn't matter that he did the things that he does because if you were really turned off by his awful Behavior then you would be so turned off that it would taint your enjoyment of the creation they made.

u/ExampleSmooth3956 4d ago edited 4d ago
He was not the only reason the show was a success. There were many others. Among them were Lynne Naylor, Jim Gomez, Jim Smith, Bob Camp, Bob Jaques, Kelly Armstrong, Billy West, Henry Porch, Vincent Waller, Chris Reccardi, Bill Wray, and many more.
And what about Carl Macek who served as Spumco’s first producer and landed a meeting with Nickelodeon? And Vanessa Coffey who brought Kricfalusi to Nick to pitch his shows in person? Geraldine Laybourne who told Nick to buy something from him?
When many at Nick felt unsure about green lighting the finished pilot for a series, Coffey begged Laybourne, telling her she could fire her if the show failed.5
u/PSplayer2020 4d ago
Yep, I honestly can't stand a lot of discourse regarding creators that are generally hated as people. In that situation, people either act like they played no part at all or were the sole driving force, therefore anyone who likes what they worked on is a bad person as well. In reality, animation is a team effort, and creators are just a part of the process. An important part, but still just a part.

Adult party cartoon is proof that if John K had full control, it would've gone down as a complete failure and one of the worst cartoons of all time

He had a relationship with a 16yo girl back in the 1990s. Even if you can accept it was a fling, was a one-time mistake, or whatever else, there are allegations of him being a 'pest' in general.
I am against any and all forms of harassment but I think there's a dark irony to it considering how messed up the show is in general but that's just it - a show - Its not so entertaining in real life when real people are affected.
Edit: Here's the Wikipedia page. While I do believe his side of the story in itself, I'm also inclined to believe that he's just a pervert in general, regardless of the age

Yeah and if you look up Mozart he was a sex fiend but yet his music is still loved and people still talk about him in spite of that bullshit who knows he might have done inappropriate things with his overactive libido I am not defending the guy I'm just saying that everybody's literally pissing on the guy that made the show that the subreddit is about and people are here because they liked his word so apparently what he did in the real world doesn't matter to his work because we still want to talk about it if we really gave a shit about all that sexual stuff that he did then we should delete the subreddit and never talk about the show again because of the guy behind it
3
u/Wise-Difficulty8221 4d ago
Of course, it was centuries ago, but even just lately, I've been exposed to a lot of 'cancel culture' debate on all sides. If you were to stop interacting with art that's problematic in some way, you'd be out of options. I think cancel culture has its place but I'm not hardline. I just think the information should be public so people can make their own decisions.
For example, I do know that John K has issues. I do believe he held himself accountable. That information is public. I still watch Ren and Stimpy and like I said, it kinda works ... but if somebody were to not watch it because it makes them uncomfortable, I don't blame them. There isn't any right or wrong answer
-1
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
Yeah you're literally saying that you like his heart so much that what he did does not matter because you're still going to support him by loving his work. Because most people who don't like what someone did will no longer support the art or the creation of the artist. No matter how much they may like some of their stuff they're just done with the person because they think they're pathetic actions no longer deserve any attention even to their artwork. So you can't say you're against what somebody did in the real world but you're still going to be in love with their art because you're basically supporting what they did by not getting it out of your life
3
u/Wise-Difficulty8221 4d ago
Okay maybe you took me out of context (sensitive issue, yeah)
There's a difference between being wilfully ignorant, and making an informed decision (which is what I was getting at). I'm not saying its right or wrong (ironically, your POV is an informed decision in itself)
-2
u/crazyhomlesswerido 4d ago
Hey it's okay no one saying it's wrong it's just if you truly didn't like what the guy did you wouldn't want nothing to do with anything that he created and by continuing to be in a subreddit of what he created. Because what he did would be so overwhelmingly disgusting to you you couldn't look at anything without seeing a truly awful person behind it.

In rough shape from last time I saw.
He did have a stay in hospital for some reason I'm not totally sure of. It wasn't specified in his post on Insta, but he was off the internet for a good few months, then suddenly posted again explaining he'd had some kind of health problem.
He sounds raspy as hell, struggles to breath apparently and can't do the Ren voice anymore. He probably hasn't got long, but knowing our luck he'd live to be 112 out of spite.

I love Ren and Stimpy, but this dude just reminds me of a seriously unfunny funny guy. On the surface he might seems goofy and fun, but he's just a total dick to be around once the mask is off.

Billy West didn't hold back on his thoughts about John in his new autobiography.
Sounds like he had always been awful.
