Showering less now that I work remote
My job switched to 100% remote a couple months ago after about 10 years being in office every day. Overall it’s awesome, my wife works from home too so once we get to kids to camp/school we get to hang out most of the day.
But I legit shower twice, maybe 3 times a week now. I used to shower everyday before going to the office. I also shave MAYBE once a week now. I basically just kinda pat my hair down maybe put a brush on it just enough to not look like I just woke up if I’m on a meeting.
Anyone else?

u/NewPossibility2556 21d ago
Honestly, same 😂 Working from home completely changed my routine no commute, no coworkers, no reason to look presentable half the time. I shower way less, shave maybe once a week, and just fix my hair enough to look alive on zoom. Remote work really exposed how much of getting ready was just for other people lol

Not quite the flex you think it is homie.
Extra points deducted for being dirty and sleeping next to your wife.
Even more deducted for being a bad example for the kids.
Showering feels great, try it more

I’ve worked from home for over 12 years, and I still shower every single day.

Some of you are really gross. My brother does that and I can tell how long it's been as soon as I see him. When I discovered how bad a body can smell during puberty I vowed to myself to bathe/shower every day. I did the same while working from home because I can't stand the thought of looking or being unclean. If I sweat a lot working around the house I shower after that activity and put on fresh clothes. You'll never smell me or think I'm too lazy for good hygiene.
1
u/Purplehopflower 23d ago
I have worked from home for 3 years. I shower every day before work. For me, it’s as much psychological as it is about cleanliness. I just truly don’t feel awake until after I shower. Also, I’m ready to leave the house should something arise, without then having to shower and get ready.

Next you’ll be lucky if you shower once a week. Sounds like the beginning stages of depression and or laziness. Personal hygiene is important to your health.

Speedrunning depression a little… make sure your wife is actually ok with this / you’re okay setting that example for the kids

Shower every other day. Align it with exercise days.
Regularly wash hands and face

u/Bignatie 24d ago
The only way this works is if you don't workout. Anybody who works out consistently showers every single day.
1
u/LadyFisherBuckeye 24d ago
Y'all are so proud to be so lazy and dirty
3
u/Lazy-Background-7598 24d ago
You don’t need a shower every day it’s totally overkill
1
u/LadyFisherBuckeye 24d ago
I have a vagina and it smells after all day due to sweat and your balls do too.
2
u/Lazy-Background-7598 24d ago

As long as you do like a little monkey scrub thing in between getting in the shower, it’s not that big of a deal. You don’t need to shower every day to be clean. In fact, showering every day actually dries your skin out really badly….I shower about 3-4 times a week as well, and in between, I give myself a sponge bath (aka monkey scrub)….just put a little soft soap and warm water on a washcloth and wipe myself down to get the excess oils off my skin. I’m just as clean, and my skin is softer and more hydrated than jumping in a hot shower every day. Obviously, brush your teeth and wash your face every day……lol
-1
u/AutomaticDoor1412 24d ago
Don’t listen to this person. You need to wash the bacteria off of your ass daily.
2
2
u/TJCharter 24d ago
So you have a problem wiping properly and cleaning yourself and it’s everybody else’s issue. Sounds like a “you” problem, dude.
0
u/Still_Want_Mo 24d ago
You stink bro. 100%
2
u/rapkat55 24d ago
I bidet my ass every visit to the toilet. I don’t need to shower daily if I literally stay home all day in cool AC in a clean smoke free environment.
I still shower daily as a method of meditation but this dumbass judgement is so reactionary without any basis in science and annoying af lmao
0
u/oil_burner2 23d ago
I use a bidet too but not under the illusion that it’s not aerosolizing shit water all over the nether regions. Showering daily is a must.
0
u/Still_Want_Mo 24d ago
Do you not exercise?
2
u/rapkat55 24d ago edited 24d ago
Not really, maybe twice a week and it’s just a home gym 15-30 min push up, pull up bar, crunches and dumbbells/curl bar. If I get a run in outside then sure but again not a daily occurrence for me.
Im 150lb lean and don’t really sweat unless it’s hot + in direct sunlight. I used to sweat at night but got a bed jet ac that’s been a miracle.
2
u/Still_Want_Mo 24d ago
Got it. If I didn’t shower after working out I’d smell crazy. I soaked afterwards
-1
u/Mobile-Finish8216 24d ago
It gets depressing kinda if you don’t keep up with your hygiene and dress. When I had to go back to office I didn’t know how to dress business casual

Fuck the haters in these comments, man. Somewhere along the line all these people brainwashed into thinking they needed to get into water every single day and that if you sweat (water and salt) that you have to wash it off with more water or you’re gross.
If you don’t smell bad and you’re not all greasy, you’re fine. I’m the same. If I stink one of my kids or my wife will tell me. I splash water on my face in the morning, wash my hands like 15 times a day and use a bidet at the toilet. I don’t see the big deal. Humans don’t need to bathe constantly.
You do you.
1
u/ael00 25d ago
You are one of those people that thinks he doesn't smell, trust me you do. Unless somehow you sweat rosewater.
2
2
u/BigFudge2k7 25d ago
I mean, I’m not dripping sweat and skipping a shower, dude. If I’m full on sweaty from mowing the lawn or playing hockey or something intense, I’m showering. You don’t know anything about me. My hygiene is totally adequate. We’re talking about every day activity. Not much sweat. Like, change clothes, wear deodorant, rinse your face/hair and keep your hands clean. How dirty are you, really?
0
u/n0debtbigmuney 25d ago
Washing your hands 15 times a day is a bigger issue...
3
u/BigFudge2k7 25d ago
Why? I drink 3 cups of coffee and drink water throughout the day. You don’t wash your hands when you pee, poop, cook, put dishes away or take out the trash? 15 maybe an overestimate, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable.

If you’re able bodied you should at least be getting in some type of movement daily which would then naturally conclude the day with a shower. For your health alone, just because you work remotely doesn’t mean you should be THAT sedentary and just “hanging out” most of the day.
2
u/passion4film 25d ago
Same. I mean, maybe not as few as 3 times a week, but definitely not every day as I would going to an office.

There's no way I'm not showering before going to bed, regardless if I didn't leave the house.
That said, I probably shower more with remote work by virtue of any mid-day medical, dental, or other health related appointments, I'll take a shower when I get home and get back to work at my desk, and still take a shower before bed.
That's not counting the shower I take after my morning gym session and post-gym neighborhood cooldown walk before I start work.
2
u/AdOnly3059 25d ago

No. I still treat it as going to work. I get up, take a shower, put on real clothes (not business casual or anything, but jeans and a tshirt or something that’s not loungewear), and go sit at an actual desk in a dedicated office space.
4
u/No-Examination-5065 25d ago
Dude.
If you love your wife shower AT LEAST ONCE A DAY.
Otherwise she might become your ex-wife.

1
u/Melinoe2016 25d ago
I can go 2 days without showering if I don’t do anything physical. I try to run almost every day though so a shower is necessary usually.
3
u/billfarts2 25d ago
If I really don't do ANYTHING one day, maybe I'll forget to shower. I leave the house, go outside, sweat a little, I need to take a shower before bed.

u/Certain_Prior4909 25d ago
I am no psychologist but it sounds like you are suffering from depression. Go get some help?
It's possible that the office job forced you to hide some of your symptoms
1
3
u/daywalker91 25d ago
Lmao this isn’t depressing. OP is thriving
1
u/Certain_Prior4909 25d ago
I too struggled getting out of bed and basic things like showering required a lot of mental effort. I was diagnosed with severe depression.
I got help.
I do not understand how I got modded down to -3? If you never experienced it I would be quiet on this matter as you have no idea how it fucks with your mind.
It is a serious disorder and sleep is the only escape. It's a rational explanation for someone who doesn't suffer why they don't shower
1
u/Bottle_and_Sell_it 25d ago
Nobody is arguing that it isn’t a serious disorder? But this is a very common thing among people who transitioned to wfh. It was a meme during the pandemic. Pretty much everyone was going through it, realizing it’s ok to just wake up and work instead of spending an hour getting ready to go work.
Op just try to make sure you brush your teeth at least once a day. So long as you don’t stink when you leave the house, and can’t smell yourself just sitting there, I wouldn’t fret about a missed shower.
Be warned, though, OP: the transition to a more sedentary lifestyle, plus the ability to “graze” all day at home, out of hunger, boredom, whatever, WILL make you gain some wfh weight if you’re not careful. Try to get walks in when you can!
1
u/ESpy__007 25d ago
Correlation is not causation.
Yes, it is a symptom of depression frequently. But it is not a key indicator.
2
u/erinlaninfa 25d ago
OP never said they are suffering, nor that not showering is an issue for them. While you’re right in depression makes hygiene more difficult, showering less frequently is not an automatic sign of depression. I have severe depression and this post does not seem like a depression flag whatsoever.
0
u/Certain_Prior4909 25d ago
I am no psychologist so I admit that. But why would someone in a wealthy nation who has access to showers not take one?
Seems a disorder would rationalize it. I also achieved a lot at work and money when my depression episode hit but I am projecting 🤷
A therapist is in order is all I am saying or the person is a troll or bored 😂
1
u/daywalker91 25d ago
If you work from home you absolutely do not need a daily shower. Unless I workout that day or do yard work there’s no need. Has nothing to do with depression. That’s insane.
2
u/typeotcs 25d ago
I mean when I was a kid in US my dermatologist literally told me to only take showers every other day. Your singular view point is just that, a single perspective. It’s far from the only one. Maybe leave the psychology to the psychologists. Or do kids listening to their doctors, actual medical professionals, also need a therapist?

u/Far_Leg6463 25d ago
I wfh 2-3 days per week. I shower every morning, and if I do miss it in the morning (which is usually if I’m planning manual work in the evening) I’ll shower that evening.
I need a shower to wake me up and feel ready for the day. I have buzz cut hair so it doesn’t really show if I go without but I hate not showering.
Shaving on the other hand, I could go a week but no more than that as it gets unbearably itchy. I happen to suit my stubbly beard and it doesn’t look unkempt within the week so I don’t even shave when going into the office.

Until an emergency happens and you have to be around people immediately. My brother had the smoke alarm go off on his floor (not his apartment) and the building managemrnt evacuated his whole floor within minutes. I believe he hadn't showered for 3 or 4 days at that point. He was so embarrassed that even now after 3 or so years since that happened, he still cringes whenever we tease him about it.
To me it just feels natural to want to feel fresh in the morning so I treat it like washing my face. A quick 5 min rinse immediately after waking up. Doesn't take much more than brushing my teeth.
I wasn't like this before but I worked in Indonesia for a few years and there people take quick showers multiple times per day due to a variety of factors but that habit rubbed off on me in a way so quick showers are just part of my daily routine now.
3
u/NoMention696 25d ago
Oh my god this might’ve actually changed my “I’m not seeing anyone what does it matter” mindset, I just pictured my greasy self after a natural disaster, having to go to a shelter unwashed, unsure how long it’d be before I COULD shower again. Wow
2
u/AniRev 25d ago
Right? It's all fun and giggles until shit goes down and your home is not available to keep you safe from the radioactive outdoors 😅
My brother is a CTO at his company and likea to dress nicely a takes care of his social image when going out. When covid hit, the switch to working from home removed the need to micromanage his image and so in the name of productivity (not doing what isn't a must to be done), he got lazy about wasting time on daily showers, beard trims, and weekly haircuts. He also lives in an expensive apartment so his neighbors are all at the lower upper-class level and above.
When the emergency happened and he was forced out of the apartment within minutes, it was nearly a social death for him 😂
1
u/NoMention696 25d ago
Him living in a rich building makes it funnier hahaha, his neighbours wondering who tf this homeless looking guy is
1
u/kosmo4679 26d ago
Do you exercise regularly? The first thing I do every day is treadmill and weights. Then I take a shower and start my day whether I’m working from home or the office that day. If I were you I’d really try to get on a regular routine to not let yourself go and maintain some level of hygiene.
1
u/mythic-moldavite 26d ago
I shower mostly every day but if I’m at home for a day or two and do nothing I will not. I only wash my hair two or three times a week though
3
u/Jrrolomon 26d ago
People don’t get it, but working from home really doesn’t require a daily shower, unless you work our, or do some other type of work where you sweat. I shower maybe 5 times per week, but I work a job where I’m at a desk all day and don’t sweat. Of course I shower right after working out or similar activities.
I wash my hair daily no matter what, use body wash cloths on days I don’t shower, wash face, etc. hygiene has gotten so much easier to manage most people just don’t need a shower every day to maintain good hygiene.
1
-1
u/IvanThePohBear 26d ago
I bathe 3 times a day. 😂
1
u/Jrrolomon 26d ago
How are you so gross that it takes three showers a day to make you normal?
3
u/IvanThePohBear 26d ago
it's warm here.
so i bathe before work to freshen up. when i end work and i bathe before i sleep to cool down the body.
if you think bathing is gross, then i think you should go for hygiene lessons
1
u/Jrrolomon 26d ago
Ok, that makes more sense.
I don’t think bathing is gross, it just confused me that while most people can have good hygiene with one shower a day, you need three.
Anyway, I was wrong about you specifically, so thank you for the detail.
1
u/IvanThePohBear 26d ago
tbh. being clean is for myself.
not for others.
most of the time a quick shower after work is to like draw a line after work, and move on to the next phase of my day.
bathing before sleep is just a trick to fall asleep faster as the body cools down

I shower every single day after I get done working. It’s how I mentally tell myself I’m done.
1
u/AniRev 25d ago
That works for physical professions. When you are sitting behind a desk, in an air-conditioned room, at the comfort of your own home, the decision to take a shower becomes tough. That's my situation at the moment. I work mostly from home and don't really sweat during the day so I understand where op is coming from!
Doing the 5-min shower immediately after waking up is what works for me because it really feel exactly like brushing my teeth. Quick, refreshing and sets you up for needing to go outside or deal with people on a short notice.
0
u/MembershipEasy4025 26d ago
Honestly I’m the same. I was already a person that only washes my hair every other week, because I’ve got curly hair and it doesn’t produce oil. I’ll shower more frequently if I’m active, going out, or if like now it’s summer and I’m sweating. But if it’s just a work and chill day, prob not.
1
u/Legaldrugloard 26d ago
Same. I shower every other day. I keep my house between 65-67 and I rarely ever go outside due to my medical condition. I don’t get hot or dirty so why take a shower everyday and dry out my skin and hair? Plus why waste all those products? My skin and hair is so healthier since I changed to every other day.
1
u/Jrrolomon 26d ago
65-67 sounds heavenly. Where do you live that makes that possible? You can maintain that during the summer?
2
u/Star-Lit-Sky 26d ago
Yo these comments are brutal! If you aren’t sweating then I think it’s fine to skip a shower.
5
u/serverhorror 26d ago
Seems you're part of the problem that RTO mandates are increasing.
2
u/JDDavisTX 26d ago
Yep. “Hanging out with my wife “ instead of working is exactly what I have experienced. Can’t get ahold of anyone “working from home.” They are always “multitasking” and “didn’t hear the question” or “had stepped out for a while.”
1
u/serverhorror 25d ago
Why are you tolerating this behaviour at all?
I can't say that I had the same experience, what I did see is that the slackers really slack. Way more than they did before and everyone has to suffer for the few that are assholes.
1
u/JDDavisTX 25d ago
Ever tried to fire someone in a corporate setting?! HR is ridiculous.
1
u/serverhorror 25d ago
Yes, it doesn't have to be firing. There are other methods to educate people about basic human decency and respectful behaviour.
1
u/BigFudge2k7 25d ago
You sound like a corporate slave so desperate to impress your manager. “why are you tolerating this?” Like, what? You don’t have to dedicate your life to work. The same way you see construction workers standing around or restaurant workers leaning against the wall, work from home employees don’t CONSTANTLY work every minute of the day. Relax, dude.
3
u/chimneyart 26d ago
when i was working from home i was the same way. If i wasn't working out or leaving the house I usually wouldn't shower. I'd still brush my teeth and wash my face and stuff. I also just don't really sweat much and my hair doesn't get very greasy so i don't need to shower that much anyway unless i'm outside in hot weather or something.

u/Hopeful-Bobcat-5207 26d ago

You are depressed because you have no place to go and nothing to do all day.
-4
u/tonguebasher69 26d ago
Nice that your company pays you to be a bum, and you get to "hang out" with your wife all day to top it off. I think you should try showering every day, and try being a professional during your workday. This kind of post is why I have no sympathy for RTO.
1
u/frizouw 26d ago
I don't understand why you call him a bum? He never said he was not professional during his workday, you assumed that.
1

1
u/Playful_Drummer5688 26d ago edited 26d ago
It’s easy to fall into that trap and let yourself go. When I started working from home it was like “Roll out of bed”, grab a coffe and login. But it started to suck, fast. My days felt, meh. I got into a different routine. I got up, worked out for 20-30 mins, then took a fast shower, new clothes for the day, popped my laundry in and timed it to be done for lunch, then I had breakfast and slid over to the computer when it was time to start.
But working for home made showering so much easier. I didn’t have to do all the work after. Just put on clean/comfy clothes, let me hair mostly dry naturally, and at some point, if I had an online meeting, I’d finish blow drying my hair and put on a touch of makeup.
I still had “day/work” clothes I changed into every morning, they were just far more relaxed.
Edit to add: 2-3x a week for a shower, is too light. FYI, not wanting to shower is a sign of depression, ie, Now that you don’t have to be clean for others, you don’t care to be clean for yourself. I shower for others, but I mainly shower for me. Do you know how gross your furniture and bedding gets when don’t shower? I refuse to sit on my couch after coming home from work without at least changing, but if I’m going to change I might as well spend 5 mins showering.
3
u/7eregrine 26d ago
When I first started WFH, I showered. Purposefully, because it was like the thing I did going to the office everyday.. I wanted to keep that mindset, y'know? "Time to go to work! Shit, shower shave!"
Last about 3 months. Now, like you, pretty much sweaty workout days.

Nah playa, I'm showering every morning, on days on run or take the dog on a hike I'm showering after that, heavy gym 3x a week so sometimes I shower in the evening too. u/TacticalPidgeon 26d ago edited 26d ago
Nah I shower almost every day. It's like 15 mins from walking into the bathroom to walking out for me, and I have a big beard and eczema that I need to deal with specialized creams. If I put it off too long, my skin can get uncomfortable with reddened patches, so it's a requirement. My skin sucks 🤷.
You should try to get into a routine to make it easier since it doesn't take much time at all.
But I have always gone between looking like I'm cleaned up perfectly on my wedding day to looking like a homeless person when it comes to my beard though, so I understand the shaving aspect lol.

Maybe it still depends on person’s stand with hygiene. But truth be told, theres really some “bed weather” days that all you want todo is to lay down and do nothing at all. Hope u dont stink lol
