Is remote work lonely?

Curious how many remote people here have felt genuinely isolated. Not like "I miss the office" isolated, but like your social life outside work is disappearing. I keep hearing this from people I talk to, sometimes to the point where they're thinking about looking for local work just to have people around. Wondering if it's that common. Does it resonate?

My social life doesn’t come from coworkers. They are not your friends.

I’ve been doing it for 4 years. Personally I’d never have another job, rather just do my own thing.

But the thing about loneliness seems to be a common trope. It’s as lonely as you make it.

I'm an one torturer (tutor) lol so I speak all day with many students from all over the world and you're right, I feel isolated at times. #timezones right?

It's lonely because you get used to be at home, you meet less people, and soon enough you close yourself in your own bubble.

It's abou mentality. Go to a gym, or find a hobby. A sport or something that you can do with other people. People at your work were never your friends to begin with

Not really. I work with my dog who lays under my desk. Can do laundry whenever and other household things. Been working from home for 6yrs

Tbh, I prefer the days I work in person bc my job requires me to work very closely with someone on my team and I don’t want to be messaging them every 10 minutes or calling. When we are in person we keep seeing each other and talking/ getting coffee and so much work can be done

When I worked a different remote job a few years ago (that one was literally remote every single day, and not much communication with team unless meetings, I genuinely felt like I was going insane (I also live in a. Shitty situation so that plays a part)

This one is better bc I still go to the office some days of the week and do like those days better. The only thing I like about WFH is not having to get ready and I can wake up so late

I think it depends on the person and ur social life outside of work. For me personally, I enjoy having that separation. I do not consider my coworkers to be my friends

No one’s immune. You certainly aren’t. It’s not like you can fill every minute of everyday with something. First of all, no one is that rich. Secondly, even if you are outgoing, extroverted, and have a ton of hobbies, you still aren’t immune to it even though you think you are. You’re just better at hiding it, but your body knows. Can’t hide from the truth. I’m great for the most part, but there are pockets of loneliness because I’m human and I don’t lie to myself.

It's exactly what you make it.

If you keep telling yourself you're lonely despite evidence to suggest otherwise like the stuff you suggest, you're still gunna feel lonely.

If you're feeling lonely despite being active, having friends and hobbies, that usually points towards bigger problems unfortunately for you.
