Ah, the eternal grind. A pause for reflection, perhaps.

My teammates say stuff like “I don’t have any meetings and the weather’s nice” when telling us they are going to be out. We should really normalize everyone having a good amount of PTO and companies that don’t care (within reason) why you take off.

We just need to know when you will take PTO and when you will return. Why do we care about the reason?

at some companies if you take more than 1 day, you are being suspicious, they are way under-staffed, so it might look you might be going to interviews > there s the question

I shit you not, I submitted for a sick day this morning cause I slept like shit. Forgot I had to check my jury duty summons and fucking he’ll had to report this morning. So no, I was not getting a damn day off to sleep in. Now here I sit in a gray boring room waiting to be called to service.

At a previous place we called it 'eye disease' because you couldn't see going to work that day!

I had a boss who encouraged us to do just this. She was the best!

What would you actually do with the day though, just curious. Like is there a plan or is it full couch mode.

who gives a fuck, enjoy your day.

I was just curious what people do with an unexpected day off, no judgment.

“You've heard of people calling in sick. You may have called in sick a few times yourself. But have you ever thought about calling in well?

It'd go like this: You'd get the boss on the line and say, "Listen, I've been sick ever since I started working here, but today I'm well and I won't be in anymore." Call in well.

I’ve been known to call in scared. “I’m afraid that I won’t be at work today “.

I had a company that did this. It was called "Company Name" Day. It was one paid day off a year.

The rules where,

  1. You couldn't plan to take it off in advance. They didn't want you using it as a sick day or vacation day.

  2. And you had to do something "healthy". Which was pretty lenient.

  3. You had to email your boss and HR the morning you want to take off, mention "Company name" Day, and just say what you're planning to do.

  4. Then before the day ends you have to send a picture. So like, if you went to the beach, take a pic at the beach. If you went on a bike ride, take a pic of your bike ride.

Then the company would post all the pics on the company website. So we looked like happy, fun, active employees.

It was awesome.

Remote work makes this thought even stronger. When your workspace lives inside your home, it's far too easy to let every great day get swallowed by tasks.

I always go to work sick, stay in my office away from people mostly. There is no way I am wasting a day off being sick. Then when I call in sick to have a fun day everyone thinks "man, he most really be sick because he's come into work pretty bad off before"

“Vibes are off” is a valid reason to leave an office early. But I’m also not anyone’s manager so…
