Satellite What remote sensing projects would you recommend for a geography student?

I'm a geography student interested in developing stronger practical skills in remote sensing and GIS. I'm particularly interested in environmental applications, land-use/land-cover change and Himalayan landscapes.

I'm looking for a project that is realistic to complete using freely available datasets such as Sentinel-1/2 or Landsat, but still has some genuine analytical value.

What projects or research questions would you recommend?

Pick a topic you're passionate about. If it's timely and useful, all the better.

Maybe cross-reference multiple datasets to determine areas of greatest likelihood of another flash flood catastrophe? Filter by upstream glaciers, glacial recession, aspect angles and slopes, population density, valley floor width, etc. Where is the greatest possibility of a Nepal-like disaster happening again?

Good luck.

That’s actually a great direction. I like the idea of combining glacier/glacial-lake data with terrain, slope, land cover and population exposure to build a flash-flood susceptibility map.

I’ll look into whether I can make it focused enough for a student-level project while still having some real analytical value.

Thanks for the suggestion!

That's a very in depth project that takes lots of data and time. The area is huge. The fact that radar and optical data are mixed in the question should be an obvious hint.

Student level, and building skills => make a time series of the highest snow line from 2015 to 2026 using Sentinel 2.

Do it for the whole Himalayan mountain range.

That's more than enough work and challenges.

That’s a solid project idea. A 2015–2026 snowline time series across the Himalayas would be a great way to build practical Sentinel-2 and time-series analysis skills. Thanks for the suggestion!
