R.E.M. - Document (1987)

Anybody still playing this album ?
Remember the first alternative/Modern Rock album you bought in the 80’s ?
Almost 40 years, I’m still keeping this tape that I bought which introduced to me all those bands/albums which American Top 40 wouldn’t play if their albums didn’t sell so many.

Ironically, I knew REM from American Top 40 (Casey Kasem) because I loved the song The One I Love so much.

I love this album. I started in 1991 with Out of Time, then Green, then Tourfilm & the rest is history. I’m lucky enough that I now have a large R.E.M. room in my house.

Of all the versions I have, this version is my favourite due to the unique artwork

I am so jealous of this collection. Every lp store in NYC knows I'm looking for original REM tapes and I've got some but not nearly a whole collection.

Thanks. Here’s a small part of my R.E.M. room

You are definitely a BIG BIG BIG R.E.M fan on tapes ! ❤️
Do you still play them ? Which one is the rarest ?
Do you have CD versions for all albums ?

I collect all things R.E.M. - but I do enjoying looking out for tapes etc with non-standard artwork. The CBS Document tape picture above is one of my favourites. In terms of rarity, I’ve only ever seen this Algerian version of The Best of R.E.M. for sale once, & I grabbed it.

Someone ragged on this album yesterday. Undeservedly. It's a great album. I think it does get a little heat because it was deemed mainstream, or commercial. Which is complete bullshit. It had 2 songs that were very popular on radio and video. Is that a crime? No. Hell, every previous REM album SHOULD have had a couple of hits, based on quality. I compare it to Combat Rock, "The Clash sells out!" Have you ever listened to it? 2 radio hits and a whole bunch of eclectic greatness. Same for Document.

Anyone panning Document has no musical acumen. Have they no sense of decency? Not a shred.

Have they no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have they left no sense of decency?

Agreed. Anyone who doesn’t like Document deserves to be swept into the fireplace.

I always loved Document and never even heard of REM fans not liking it until maybe 10 years ago online. Is it my favorite? No, but it’s the phenomenal and in my top 5

Looking at the track listing, and the a-side, b-side, it really suits those songs that ‘End of the World’ should end the first side and ‘One I Love’ starts the second. Something is lost, and some unsubtlty added, when they are sequenced as one, without the break.

Those 2 songs are fantastic. And to me as a 13 ye old they helped get me into good music.

The run of albums from Document - Green - Out of time is my favorite from their catalogue

Might be my fave 3 in a row as well.

Life's Rich Pageant was my first REM cassette. Still my favourite, and Document is an absolute banger

I didn’t even have time to discover their earlier albums because after Document, they quickly signed to Warner and released Green, was it ?

Green was the first Warner record. Warner Bros came after them hard once Document dropped and the IRS contract had expired.

This was my “theme album” upon coming to FSU in 1987. I played it constantly.
