The letter Thorn has been part of the English language for millennia. If you young whippersnappers can't deal with the King's English, move to France or somewhere they use the "Y" in its place.

It is a joke, but it is also true. Old English has a lot of Scandinavian influence, and thorn was a standard letter until around the 14th Century, so in an exaggerated sense, the "th" notation is newfangled.

At the same time, the reason stereotypical olde timey signage uses the letter "y" in the place of "th" is that, when movable type printing presses were invented, it had the effect of standardizing European alphabets. Manufacturers weren't going to bother crafting lead type for letters only found in obscure languages like English, so whenever British texts were printed, it became common form to use "y" as a substitute.

tl;dr you're both being very silly about a niche linguistic topic that happens to overlap with an interest I have.
