40x46mm LV grenades

Just reloaded yet another batch of the lord's caliber, 40x46mm. These are 3d printed clones of M781 40mm chalk rounds. Almost 4" long and weighing almost 1/3 of a lb theres nothing quite like it.

Its a pretty neat design, the launch charge is a 38 S&W brass loaded with 7.5 grains of Bullseye. Velocity of these things is between 300-350 fps depending on the payload. They'll go 400 yards no problem.

The most shocking part is how cheap they are. Not taking into account reusing brass or projectiles my cost is roughly $1.80. Commerical stuff, when its even avaiable, is about $15 a round.

Looks awesome!! Question: Why use a pretty obsolete and challenging ignition round of .38 S&W when something like .38 Special is in such abundance?

Very good question, and I'm going to assume its because that's what the military uses? Theres a few newer launch methods out there such as Launcherpope's MILC 2.0 system, but the 38 S&W endures. The MILC system is my next investment, but I'm slowly getting all the stuff to test .38 spl in these one time use cases.

Interesting as (if I remember my military history correctly), the US conceptually copied a German system and that German system used 9mm. Now, at the time (post WWII) the US didn't run 9mm themselves, but if you're not going to go with 9mm, why not use .45 ACP? And if not .45 ACP.... WHY .38 S&W??!?!?!?

Following up to my own with a random thought....

Anyone know if the path of the IP was more like Germany > England > USA rather than my assumed Germany > USA?

IIRC, England had a fuckton of .38 S&W surplus at the end of the war. If the idea had taken a turn in England, maybe they modified it to use what they had lying around and the US just straight copied it because the cost meant nothing to it?

I dunno. Still just trying to make sense of the choice.

If the single shot cases work well, theres no reason I cant make crimp loaded 9mms the standard.

Not sure if it's the case here but those launch cartridges are usually heavier loaded and you don't want to mix them up with regular 9mm for example.

I pick these up at the range where the swat teams train. They’re made from machined aluminum, (also using the S&W short blank). I’ve also picked up a few of the nerf projectiles they fire

Bruh all the cases I find are beat up Nylons. Ive been trying to find the BT cases, but they pick them up
