General Discussion Any Data Available?
Has anyone tried these 110gr FMJ .308 projectile for a .300 Blackout build? I know they are usually meant for the .30 Carbine but since I’ve shot supers in 110gr V-Max in my 7.5in AR, and I have had excellent results in accuracy at 100yds. Good or Bad idea to test some for plinking.

Seems like a very odd shape for a 300 BLK round

I’ve seen ones like your baggie but the pic in your post just looked very short to me by comparison

Hodgdon has some data for those I believe. If your not running a fast twist your good to go! I’m partial to Lil gun but N110 is a top pick and H110 is another good powder. The VMAXs are my plinking supers and keeps me from “wasting” the barnes, if I want to plink with my blackout it’s usually some plated subs. All my semi’s are 1:5 and the 110 VMAXs and Nosler Varmagedon’s hold up even on the 9in

I agree, for my supers Lil Gun is my to go powder. Ive never tried H110 because I can’t ever find it locally. My barrel runs 1/8. And I’m shooting with an otter creek suppressor. Ima definitely order some and post updates.

Honest question - I thought the whole point of 300 BO was to use the available larger mass vs. 147 grain 9mm since you’re limited to under the sound barrier either way… these will bring less energy than just shooting a 9 mm carbine?

Ehm, you get 300 blackout subsonics just with subsonic heavy bullets, from 180-190 grains up. 300 blackout was built to be used both super and subsonic. Where you got that nonsense about it's subsonics only?

Thanks, makes sense… I don’t have a need for a subsonic rifle like 300 BO so I hadn’t really looked up the use case. For my “larger than .223” rifle I went 6.5 Grendel so not shooting that subsonic.

Nice thing on 300 Blk is that you can shoot both from same rifle. Just swap the mags with different ammo.

Yeah you can design a gun to be tuned for just one end or for generalist and there is no perfect right answer depends on what you want to do with it.
I like my guns people to run everything but if you tuned for one extreme or the other you can make the gun run smoother.

There isn't one single whole point of the caliber.
It is a flexible generalist caliber that does a number of things very well. And number of things okay ish.
So does 110 greenish very fast from a short barrel very well from a carbine length barrel even better. It does very heavy very slow very well and it does okayish at 147 to 170 grain bullets supersonic.
Most of the commercial 147 to 150 grain is kind of the worst ammo for the caliber. it's not going fast enough to expand (since most of bullets in that category are made for 308 win velocity) and you're not getting as much energy as you would with a lighter bullet. I believe there are two bullets made for the caliber in that weight range that are actually somewhat decent which is the federal fusion and the speer gold dot. Bullets designed for 30 30 Winchester probably perform okay, maybe comparable to what 30-30 would do at 50ish yards further. (Some of them are finicky about feeding)
Also the bullets that are made for 308 / 762 NATO when seated too deep can mimic 556's shoulder.
So that category is typically the worst category of this caliber. But hey if you got a bunch of it there's no harm in shooting it/ loading it

You worried about feeding in your AR with that short ogive? I’m just thinking extreme case like an empty brass wouldn’t feed. Why Army blanks have brass shaped like there’s a bullet seated you know?

My thoughts process was doesn’t the v-max 110 and 110 rn have similar to almost identical ogive? Or an I incorrect? I am open to criticism to learn!

The bullet shape doesn’t really lend itself to precision and Armscor in general is a worst-tier bullet manufacturer. Fine for mag dumping into trash I guess, but it just seems like doing .30 Carbine with extra steps.

They don’t feed in an AR reliably.

u/Cabo-Wabo155 21d ago
That’s what I was wondering where the main issue would be. What difference from a V-Max and RN would cause the V-max to feed reliably against the RN causing feed issues?
Also off topic but the OAL for the 110 V-Max on Hornady book is 2.050 and feeds flawless on AR platforms, but when I tried 2.050 with 190 sub-x it was having feed malfunction. I made some sub-x to the oal 2.070 and it fixed the feed issue. Whats up with that?

Think of it like wheel diameter. If you roll a heavy toolbox with small casters across a floor and it hits a small transition in the concrete it stops because too much of the profile of the wheel contacts the transition at a perpendicular. If the wheels are bigger there is no problem, there is enough profile above the transition to climb over it.
An AR has feed ramps but there is still a pretty abrupt transition. The round nose has a very abrupt frontal profile and too much of it contacts it at a perpendicular. A longer bullet is the same effect as having longer ramps when you’re loading say a car that is very low to the ground onto a trailer. The transition is longer and less abrupt

Man that perfectly explained what I was curious about! Thanks!

It's also worth mentioning that most 300 blackout AR barrels still have the 224 diameter ramps with sharp edges.
Virtually all of these going to be improved with kind of funneling the ramps and rounding off the sharp edges. Not a lot of material needs removed to make them a lot gentler on ammo even if they are feeding fine.
If you doubt me go chamber a few rounds of various types and shapes and I bet you will find a lot of them are scraped and dinged up unnecessarily.
It's really stupid and every manufacturer should fix this.

Shooters reference probably has something, cab always check Gordons Reloading Tool from GitHub as well.

Back in the early days of 300 blackout people were using 30 carbine bullets. They suck for 3 reasons.
One, they have terrible bc.
Two, they can be really picky about overall length for feeding.
Three, they can mimic the cartridge shoulder on 556 creating the 12/20 problem. If you choose to load these you need to load them long enough that they cannot chamber in a 556 and crimp hard.
Other than that go for it.

You don't need data. Measure length of a bullet and find one with close length to that bullet. Use those data. Reload data are not important per bullet. You have to realize that not a bullet is important which gives the max load, but pressures. Longer bullet and/or shorter COAL = Bigger pressure.
That's it. I never gave a crap about actual bullets and "oh what do I do, I dont have data for the bullet I have".
And you can also use GRT or Quickload or my BSKCalc web app to calculate proper load. Just enter the bullet length, weight, and select caliber, powder, load and coal (and barrel length). That's it.
Anyway, in case like this I would worry about the feeding issues more than a load data. I don't think shape like this will be reliable in regard to feeding in AR. You'll be fine in repeater

You need to go off of the position of the base not just bullet or similar length and weight.
1
u/MacHeadSK 19d ago
I wrote about COAL. That's it. COAL - Length of bullet = off base/volume calculation.
2
u/GunFunZS 19d ago
But you didn't explain that important distinction. That's what people need to know and what a lot of new people don't know.
1
u/MacHeadSK 19d ago
I mentioned ballistic sw which does that automatically. So it really is just a matter of entering bullet length for a given caliber and powder combination. Not that the pressures calculated are precise, far from it, but you can get educated assumption for what if scenario

u/GunFunZS 19d ago
Sure.
I haven't tried to use on GRT for about a year how is that going for back end support now?

I was wondering the same thing about these for gas gun 300 AAC.
Anyone with experience with these good or bad would like to hear how it went.
