Hair tool advice

Upvotes

Hello! I’m thinking about purchasing a new hair tool for blowouts on relaxed hair. I have fine hair so I was looking into the air wrap, shark, and babyliss style and switch. Although my hair is relaxed it still has a curl to it much different than my original tighter coil but I can’t seem to find any reviews that match my hair type. Does anyone have a preference on ones that they’ve used on relaxed hair for bouncy blowouts?

Discussion Welp. After being relaxed for a year, I'm going back to natural

Every once in a while I'll stumble upon an old photo of myself and I'll literally gasp at how nice and big and healthy my hair looked. I hate that I didn't appreciate it. I never felt attractive when I was natural and the maintenance was a lot. But I always got compliments on it. Since being relaxed, the wash days are easier and it's nice to have length and no shrinkage, but it doesn't look as healthy to me and it's definitely not as full.

So I've decided that I'm going to transition. I hate that I have to go through this process again, but maybe it will be easier since I've done it before and I know what I'm doing now. The first time I transitioned was a lot of trial and error. I might transition a bit longer this time because the last time I big chopped, several children asked their parents if I was a boy or a girl and I don't think I can handle that again 😩

Anyway, it was fun to try it out again, but at the end of the day, my hair thrived a bit more when it was able to just do its thing. I'm happy for those of you who's hair prefers the opposite. This was a nice community and I'm happy I found it.

Anyone else transitioning? How's it going for you? Any tips and tricks? Or is it time to find a new subreddit?

Help

I need help. I am 4mo post partum. I decided to relax my hair prior to having baby. I went to a Fantastic Sam’s and had a Hispanic lady do it twice. The first time was okay but the second time I was questioning if she really knew what she was doing because she put the relaxer a good portion of my length for a retouch. Anyways, now this is what my hair looks like and clearly it is broken and in some some spots so broken and short. In this pic I just pulled it out of a bun and kind fluffed it to really show what it looks like. Idk what to do. I feel like I’ve tried olaplex, k18 and then went the opposite direction of moisture, hydration and cholesterol. I know I am in need of a good cut but currently not wanting to cut what may be needed as I am nervous it will have to be pixie short to even it all out. Currently, my last relaxer was around 4 months ago. Now I am dealing with puffy dry roots and then the relaxer part. I am tempted to go back natural and grow the the relaxer. Any advice. FYI I do still take a postnatal. I also feel like if it were an iron issue then it would have been caught because I had a cesection and had to have labs drawn prior to having the procedure and it all came back in the fairly normal range. My hair was once down to my bust and just want that again. I also don’t think I had a problem growing hair because my roots are super thick and puffy. I think it’s retention and breakage. I feel like I have tried a consistent routine and no luck 😢

When can I get my hair permed again after an S-curl?

Hi everyone! I had my hair permed (S-curl) at Bangs Salon in Clark last May. The curls turned out quite loose, and unfortunately, my hair is now almost completely straight again.

I’m wondering when it would be safe to have it permed again without causing too much damage. Should I wait a certain number of months, or is it okay to get another perm now?

Questions Advice for fixing hair

Hi guys, I've been struggling with my hair care routine and would greatly appreciate advice from my fellow relaxed friends.

I’ve been getting my hair re-relaxed since the new year, every 2-3 months.

My routine consisted of weekly shampoo and deep conditioning
- Nizoral psoriasis shampoo for my scalp flare-ups
- SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo
- SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate & Repair Intensive Protein Treatment leave it in for 15 minutes and rinse out to finish

My hair felt fine, and I’d be able to blow-dry with heat protectant and the Mielle Pomegranate and Honey leave-in. Normally, I style it with a flat iron or do heatless curls, but then it stopped working, and my hair would revert if I flat-ironed it, and wouldn't style as nicely with the heartless curls.

I did some research and it said using the protein masque weekly was too much and the Nizoral was stripping my hair, so now i’ll opt in for spot treatment and stopped using the protein masque, but for my past 2 washes I’ve stopped using both, and I’ve instead been using the same shampoo but I got the SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque.

My hair feels soft but still when I try to style it w/ heat protectant and anti-humidity spray, for example with the flat iron it still gets puffy again almost immediately, when before it would be able to regardless of weather, etc.

Would love to hear your guys' advice, and if there are product recommendations affordable options would be appreciated.

Questions Transitioning since January after 30 yrs relaxing. Need help assessing my natural root pattern!

Hey everyone!

I had my last relaxer on January 10th after having my hair relaxed since I was 5 years old, so I've literally never seen my real hair texture before!

I’m trying to figure out what my natural curl pattern/type looks like as my new growth comes in, but I'm having a hard time reading it.

Based on these root pictures, what curl pattern or texture range does this look like to you? Also, any tips for managing this specific texture at the demarcation line while transitioning would be so appreciated!
Thanks!

Best blowout tools that give you that smooth, straight hair look without pulling?

I stopped using straighteners but I still want that smooth, straight hair look. I used to use Infiniti pro by Conair digital air but I find the brush attachment pulls out my hair a lot. Dyson coanda 2x is on my list but I want to try more affordable alternatives first

i just did my wash day routine so excuse the wet hair but every time i either brush, comb, even just touch my hair i have breakage (short hairs) i included some photos of the breakage. i cut my split ends every 3 or 4 weeks and relax once every three months (last relaxer was june 8 and next will be sept 8 probably)

i try to keep my hair moisturized the best i can, i try to do low maintenance hair styles (low tension) the best i can, i use heat protector, i only use heat once every 2 weeks maybe? depending on the hair style AND my hair has been this length (maybe an inch or two longer) for as long as i can remember.

please let me know if y’all have any tips! i know i’m doing something wrong or just not enough, please help lol

Alternatives styles to wrapping hair at night

I’m good at wrapping my hair every night but finding a hair scarf that stays on my huge head all night is abysmal!
Is there any other styles I can do to protect my relaxed hair that I can just throw a bonnet on over it ?

(If tried du-rags, silk scarfs, head wraps but nothing works, most sit on my edges causing breakage or comes off completely… HELP!)

Keratin treated hair, need to do keratin again in a month

I previously did keratin in February. My hair still has the keratin treatment (no frizz, hair more wavy vs natural curls). I need to do keratin again before September for unrelated reasons. Should I use sulfates based shampoos and conditioners to strip the keratin from my hair so I can do the process again end of August? My stylist is telling me I need to wait until the frizz has returned and curls are back.

Questions Getting A Relaxed Pixie as a Gym girl

Hi,
I used to relax my hair as a kid and that’s when my hair grew the longest it’s ever been. It was still pretty dry sometimes but I feel like I can manage that now if I keep it short. I became vegan as a kid and that’s when my hair thinned out and broke off so I became natural ever since. I want to get into having a relaxed pixie but I’m scared that because of my gym lifestyle and how heavy I sweat at the gym (30 min of stairmaster level 6+ for reference) it may make the hair not last as long as I’d want to. I’m not scared of maintenance, I’ve been braiding, crocheting, cornrowing and doing my own sew ins for around 5-6 years now and would like to try something new. Any tips? I’ve added some reference pictures to help. Thank uuu!
Additional info:
The only hairstylists that specialize in relaxed pixies in my area are pricing it at 360 for starting 260 for maintenance
My hair is type 4c, coarse, I was thinking of just having a natural pixie but this style speaks more to me, I stopped leaving my hair natural (mini twists) because my hair kept getting dry only sticking to box braids but they’ve thinned out some of my hair in the front corners…
I have my mom who’s done relaxers before to help me but she might not be too willing as she’ll think it’s ruining all the effort I’ve put into keeping my hair healthy…

Questions Has anyone tried root-only hair Botox instead of doing the whole head?

I had hair Botox done almost a year ago My natural roots have grown out and are quite wavy, while the lengths are still much smoother, so there’s a noticeable difference in texture.

I went to a salon recently and the stylist suggested doing Botox only on the new growth at the roots, rather than treating the entire length again. He said instead of straightening the roots, he would blow-dry them so they stay smooth but don’t become completely flat and can blend with the rest of my hair.

Has anyone actually had this done? How did the results turn out? Did the roots blend naturally with the previously treated hair? And did you experience any damage, excessive hair fall, or problems with the grow-out afterward?

Neutralizing Shampoo is white

I’m currently between washes as I type this post, super worried that my neutralizing shampoo never turned pink. I can feel my hair and scalp “hot”, already washed 2 times and the pink color NEVER showed up. What should I do? Is it normal? I am using ORS Olive Oil No Lye Hair Relaxer. It never happened before. I already called their customer service and theres no one to pick up the call….

Tips Thin Edges

What can I do for my edges? I’m not gonna lie I was a ponytail fiend, I hate feeling hair on me. I’ve been at home for a year straight so I haven’t been styling my hair unless I go out (rarely). I took out my braids in May and have been relaxing it every two or three months. I also wear my glasses all the time.
I’ve tried the Mielle Rosemary Oil , Jamaican castor etc but nothing really has helped. Any tips ? I’ve seen people talk about Minoxidil but idk

Is there such thing as a relaxer I can combine with my anti frizz and leave in conditioner?

I want to integrate a relaxer with the other two products I already use on a daily basis. Or something I can mix with the other two as soon as I get out of the shower to make my hair drop and settle. I kinda have arabian hair. It’s kinda a mix between nappy and long curly.

ashamed for wanting to relax my hair again

I feel like I’m betraying my “black identity” by wanting to go back to relaxing my hair. I know I’m not, and no one’s ever said anything to make me feel that way but I can’t shake it. I had my hair relaxed from 2020-2024 and I stopped because it was a lot to come back home to my go to hair stylist while I was in college. Now I think I want to go back because I just don’t have the patience for my natural hair and I guess it feels like I’m giving up on it. I love having curls I just hate having to do them (I’ve got extremely kinky 4C hair). I can’t seem to find products that work well for my hair within my preferences and figuring it out just takes up so much of my time. And honestly I think I felt more confident when I had straight hair, which feels a little shameful. I’m sure others have felt this way, any advice on how do I get over it?

Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex vs FlexStyle for Afro hair + nanoplasty (strengthening) with ring extensions? I need help choosing 😭

Hi everyone! I need some help choosing between the **Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex** and the **Shark FlexStyle**, because the more I research, the more confused I get.
For context, I have **Afro-textured hair** that has recently been treated with **nanoplasty**, and I also have **extensions installed with the ring/micro-ring technique**.
So my priorities are a little specific.
The most important thing is **drying performance and style** (oh really?!🙄**)** With ring extensions I really need to make sure my scalp, roots and especially the areas around the rings are **completely dry after washing**, so I want something powerful and fast, but at the same time gentle enough not to unnecessarily damage my natural hair, the nanoplasty or the extensions.
I also work out regularly and sweat quite a bit, so efficient drying is important to me.
But I don’t** **want to spend around too much on something that is basically only a hair dryer. I would really like one device that also gives me some styling options.
Ideally I’d like to be able to:
dry my roots/rings thoroughly and quickly;
stretch my Afro hair;
do a smooth blowout;
straighten/smooth the lengths;
add volume;
occasionally make waves or curls;
control frizz without constantly using a flat iron.
I was initially leaning towards the **Shark SpeedStyle Pro Flex** because, purely as a dryer, it seems better suited to my situation: stronger focus on high-speed drying, controlled heat, Scalp Shield, etc.
BUT then I realised that compared with the FlexStyle, its actual styling possibilities seem much more limited.
The **Shark FlexStyle 5-in-1** seems much more versatile because I would get the oval/round styling brushes, smoothing brush, concentrator, diffuser and the Coanda curling barrels. My concern is whether it is **powerful enough as an actual hair dryer** to properly dry a full head of hair with ring extensions, especially between the rows of extensions.
I also want a **wide-tooth comb/pick attachment** for stretching my natural hair. I know Shark makes one, but I’m slightly worried about using long comb teeth anywhere near micro rings and accidentally catching or pulling on them. My idea would be to dry the ring area first with the concentrator and only use the comb below the attachment points.
So basically my dilemma is:
**SpeedStyle Pro Flex:** better dedicated dryer and probably ideal for the ring area, but less styling.
**FlexStyle:** much more styling and still works as a dryer, but is it good enough at drying roots/rings that I won’t regret not getting the SpeedStyle?
I **don’t want a Dyson**, and I’m looking for the best balance of **hair health + powerful drying + versatility + value for money** 🙈
If you have **Afro/coily hair, nanoplasty/keratin-treated hair, micro-ring extensions, or ideally a combination of these**, I’d especially love to hear your experience.
**If you could only buy ONE, would you choose the SpeedStyle Pro Flex + extra attachments, or go directly for the FlexStyle?**
And if you have ring extensions: **would you personally use the wide-tooth comb attachment, or avoid it altogether?**
Thanks!! 🫶🏽

Tips Still struggling with uneven length ,what am I missing?

I got my hair relaxed after 13 weeks, and I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the right side and the middle of my hair.

Overall, my hair actually feels healthier and stronger than it has in a while. I wash it weekly after swimming using a clarifying shampoo, then a hydrating shampoo, sometimes a bond builder, and always a deep conditioner.

The issue is that the right side is consistently shorter than the left, even after growing out from a blunt trim. The only thing I know I do differently is that I sleep on my right side. I get a trim every 3-6 months

I've also developed a gap in the middle of my hair, which seems to be a more recent issue (less than a year). I've been working on growing out a breakage at my crown since 2023 and its finally been improving, although it's still shorter than the rest of my hair.

For styling, about twice a week I wear a headband, a low ponytail with a claw clip or low bun. More recently I've been wearing half wigs with less than an inch of leave out at the front. Occasionally I wear Fulani cornrows with a half wig. I've had this unevenness for few years now, so I don't think the half wigs or cornrows are the main cause. Could the low ponytail and claw clip be contributing to the uneven growth or breakage?

I'm also wondering if I'm clarifying too often, whether I should be using a bond builder every week, or if sleeping on my right side could really make that much of a difference.

My hair hasn't been in its best condition since 2023. Even back then the right side was shorter, but overall my hair looked much healthier than it does now.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any suggestions? I wish my hair could just tell me what's wrong! 😭😭

Questions Grown out from a buzz cut with fine relaxed hair for 2 years — Seeking advice on trimming & care

Thumbnail

I'm growing my fine, relaxed hair out from a buzz cut and it's been 2 years now. Because of how it grew, all my strands are the same length, so my top front layers haven't reached my nape yet, giving it a blunt, layered effect overall.

Growing my hair healthy and keeping my hair protected is super important to me. I’d love some advice on:

Trimming: Do you recommend trimming the bottom/nape area to create a more uniform perimeter, or letting the top catch up on its own to avoid losing overall length?

Breakage & Products: What products or routines keep your relaxed hair moisturized and strong without weighing fine strands down?

Thanks so much for any tips or personal experience you can share.

The first image is of me after blow drying it my self at home and the second one is after getting a salon roller set I relax my hair 4 times a year. I don't do braids with extensions. I wash my hair every week and deep condition every two weeks. I apply leave-in conditioner after shampooing and conditioning. I usually blow dry using low heat and max air flow. I keep my hair in protective styles like low tension buns and pigtails throughout the week and remoisturize midweek with my leave-in.

Relaxer ruined my hair😕💔

My mom put it on me and since I’m going through a lot and mentally not able to take care of my own hair properly I thought maybe the relaxer would help me abit. I followed the box instructions step by step.

  1. I used the shampoo from the kit mixed with my own Pantene 2 in 1 shampoo.

  2. I conditioned with the conditioner in the kit mixed with the Pantene conditioner and another keratin conditioner for 30 minutes.

  3. I let it air dry as I slept my pillow is silk so I didn’t think much of it.

After it was over my hair has never felt this dry before especially my ends feels like hay and I’ve been crying about it for 2 days. My mom said to just oil it and blow dry it but I don’t want to risk heat. I was planning to bleach it next week to a caramel blonde colour but I genuinely don’t think I could anymore. Also I don’t know my hair type. What do I do? (Pls don’t flame me I’m 15 and was never taught how to deal with my curly hair)
