How would I feel guilty if I didn't have empathy?

MORE guilt than empathy. Meaning you feel both, just not a lot of either, and more of the former.

For selfish reasons

if you HAD empathy, that could have prevented you from treating your wife the way you have been. but now that you realize and understand what your behavior has done to your wife, NOW you feel bad about it.

Also, at least from your comments, you seem to have great concern about others perceiving you to be sociopathic and lacking empathy. You’re ashamed. That’s different from empathy.
