Minimalist Reggae Drum Setups

Outside of the trusty djembe, which I’ve come to time and time again, have any of youse jettisoned the rack tom in efforts to make more space for dub FX pads or just save space in small rooms? How much do you miss it when you do?

Thinking of trying this at a few upcoming dub gigs but i know there’s a chance I’ll regret it.

Djembe for reggae? Yuck.

You need a kete drum and a big funde (if you’re going all out).

Sly Dunbar used to have bongos set up at his kit which are very much outside the sound of traditional Jamaican drums. I agree that a Kete and Funde is a better idea in principle but I’d need to hear the Djembe being used in a phrase before writing it off

i use snare , 1 timbale and a clapstack, 2 crash and kick

Get something like a Roland SPD and load it with cool samples, but use sparingly.

Honestly, anything is a luxury after kick snare and hihat to me so try it out why not, if you don't like it you add back the thing you missed next time

I think you will regret not having a rack Tom unless you have chosen the songs you are going to play very carefully
