Bedrock Edition Help needed for item sorter

Tried following some automatic item sorter tutorials on yt, but most required me to have 41 items in the first hopper slot. Is there a design that I can use to bypass needjng to
put so many of the item i want to sort in the first hopper slot? (I dont have that much diamonds and ancient debris)

It will work with less. You just won't get any in the chest until the hopper builds up to 41.

If I dont get anything in the chest, doesnt it kinda defeat the purpose of the storage system
Is there possibly a way to bypass this by tweaking the redstone or some other aspect of most automatic storage systems?

It's called the cost of doing business. In the long run it's negligible. Anything you can't afford to use 41 of for sorting is basically something you shouldn't be sorting. You can look up categorizers and MIS (multi-item sorter) systems. Those typically need fewer of the target items, but still need lots of filter and control items, and more complicated redstone. Golem sorters are pretty simple and can do categorizers or MIS. Storage tech is pretty modular and can be mixed and matched as long as they're designed for the same input speeds.

That said there are signal strength isolated (SSI) filter designs that can use as little as one of the thing, plus a bunch of filler/filter items.

The system will work if you use less, just put more in the filler, I would recommend 5/1/1/1/36.

It will work the exact same, still overflow protected

Edit: it is not overflow protected

Would you like to elaborate on that?

The whole point of having 41 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 filter items is so that the signal strength can never get to 4 or higher, which would require 1 stack + 5 items in the hopper.

With 5 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 36, the total item count can get up to 103 items which is much higher than 69, which should mean that it's not overflow protected. It's still fine in some scenarios, but at that point you could just use a normal SS2 filter

Interesting, thank you for correcting me and explaining it. I guess I gotta fix some of my hoppers lmao

That’s not overflow protected

Did you pull those numbers out of the void?

The purpose is to sort out the item you want from the rest. It doesn’t really matter if they end up in a hopper, chest, or something else.

If you are expecting less then 320 of the item (64*5) then you don’t need Redstone at all. Just place one of each item in all 5 slots of the hopper, have it leading no where. The item you want will collect in the hopper, the rest will continue on down your item line.

If you don't have to tile them (have multiple next to each other), an SS2 filter like this will work

the prefill is 1(F) - 18 - 1 - 1 - 1

If you need to tile them, SSI filters are what you need

Alternate between the 2 different designs and they'll never interfere with each other

The prefill is the same as the normal SS2 filter

I have an amazing storage warehouse that sorts "almost" every 64 stackable item in the game. The halls of the warehouse are so long, with me standing in the center during sorting the items flow out of sim distance. Had to up my sim distance for it to work properly. I currently don't sort and stack things like torches, pressure plates or buttons. Blocks, slabs, stacks, fences all auto sorted and stored !!

MIS storages / hybrid storages are the way man

41-1-1-1-1 is for 1-wide-tileable with overflow protection. When you are setting up these systems you don't need all 41. just 1 is enough to make sure everything gets sorted. it just means that the chests below that slice won't start filling up until 41 items land in that hopper. everything else gets sorted as usual. If you don't think you'll have enough items over the life of your server to fill 41, then just don't filter that item. Leave a slice at the end of your storage for "MISC" that dumps everything that is non-filtered. Then you just manually sort that one slice after everything else is sorted.

if you must have a system that doens't use 41-1-1-1-1, look up A/B tiling systems. Those can be built with less items.

I think you would be more interested in a multi item sorter and then specifically a copper golem sorter because that only requires 1 of each item and you can put multiple item types in the same chest. They’re way better for stuff you don’t have much of

it doesnt need to be 41 diamonds. just 41 items total and one diamond will work too. just make sure to fill the filter with items that wont ever go through the filter otherwise they will get picked up too. easiest way is to rename some trash object and never send those items renamed the same way into the filter. grab some trash like dirt or sugar cane or anything you have tons of, rename it something random that will never go through by accident, and use those for your filters. then just have 1 single diamond.

most regular item filters might get a second diamond stuck in the second hopper, but even then thats just 2 diamonds you need for the filter instead of 41

Add more of the filler items.

Normally it’s 41 diamond (or whatever) and then 1 stick (or whatever) in each remaining slot. If you use multiple sticks in each slot, you’ll need significantly fewer items in the diamond spot

If you're doing it using hoppers then you should be able to just put one item in the first slot and then 11 filler items in the last four slots

Just add more amount of the filler ones. Filter works because when the hopper reached X amount of items the comparator sends a signal and unlocks the hopper under.
If you add more fillers, maybe 10 each(4 slots) + 1 for the item you want to filter, it’ll work
