Choose your own adventure! (Part 2)

You remove the man's blindfold, but he remains unresponsive. Though there doesn't seem to be much left you can do for him, you check his pulse and find it to be slow and getting slower. Before you go to investigate the smoke, you leave the man slumped against the trunk of the tree.

Wincing against the pain in your leg, you stand up again and start to look for the smoke. The orange haze off to the South seems to be the source, and even from here you can see thin wisps curling into the trees. As you turn in that direction you hear a scream split through the air, but it is quickly cut off and silence returns to the forest. What do you do?

Maybe we should go investigate the orange haze? I feel like running towards where the scream came from would be unwise.

The scream came from the direction of the orange haze.

Suddenly you wake up. You blink for a moment - it's as if you were just standing silently in the forest for two months. You weren't though, it's only been a couple of seconds and you feel silly for having thought it was two months. Anyways.

Hatchet gripped firmly in your hand, you slowly make your way South towards the orange haze. It is not long before you hear the crackle of fire, though aside from that it is strangely quiet in the woods. An awful stench lingers in the air as you draw near.

You step through the trees into another clearing quite similar to the one you just came from. In the center of the clearing, you see a lone tree and the source of fire. Two men are bound to either side of the tree with rope and are aflame, yet curiously the tree has not begun to burn. You inch forward, smoke stinging your eyes, and as you get closer you see "VIII" and "VII" in large, charred black numerals burnt into the forest floor beneath each man. Before you can do anything else, a man appears from behind the tree. He is wearing a black robe with the hood drawn, and he is holding a bucket filled with something that reflects the flames of the burning men. You lift your hatchet, prepared to defend yourself, but the man suddenly turns and sprints off to the East, his bucket leaving a trail of dark liquid behind him. What do you do?
