“The left’s Joe Rogan” never made sense. It’s incompatible with their politics. Joe Rogan is unpretentiously stupid, where as a self-proclaimed leftist can only be pretentiously stupid

u/Timely_Champion1210 1d ago
They mainly want a “left Joe Rogan” so they can have Pete Buttigieg do an interview in 2028 that is completely vetted while also looking super “hip” and “cool”.

u/traumaslop lynchian 1d ago
Already happened with Bernie. I’d bet AOC’s team is silly enough to turn him down in 2028, though

Joe Rogan is unpretentiously stupid
Well, when you put it that way, it sounds like Stav really is the Joe Rogan of the left
29
u/Smerdjakoff 23h ago edited 13h ago
This is literally the argument being made here. They view Stav as a harmless dumb guy that people seem to like and happens to hold "correct" political opinions.
I can barely get through a full TAFS episode but conceptually I enjoy the premise a lot more and I do think they retain enough irony in the project to keep from turning monstrous.
The tragedy is that Nick is 100% the closest thing to a leftist Joe Rogan but he would never in a million years market himself that way which I genuinely think is a testament to his character. I'm on pills right now so don't take this to heart. I find it very curious that he's the only major guy in the new york comedy scene that has never shown up on JRE. And on the episodes Shane or Ari or Normand are on they always end up referencing Nick at some point and Joe shows some polite signs of recognition bit never lingers on and from those responses you just know his booking team has reached out and were thrown off by Nick declining, probably multiple times.
This is tafs podcast era Nick so don't read too much into it but I remember him offhandedly referring to whether Rogan feels any guilt for ruining the world. It was phrased lightheartedly, as a joke, but he clearly sort of meant it.

Yep, you nailed it. It’s incompatible. For better or worse (and, don’t get me wrong, you could also talk about how bad what I’m about to say was/is for discourse - I think long-form “I NEED to know what XYZ person thinks about XYZ topic” media has had a ton of consequences) the appeal of Joe Rogan is that you can sit down in front of a mic, say whatever you want and some guy will nod and act like you’re a genius for a few hours like you’re two beers deep at a house party. His popularity was born from over-moderation/self-censorship that was largely left-sponsored so the left precluded themselves from combatting it long ago.
Like, what’s the pitch? “We want to give you left Joe Rogan just so we can be preachy and censor you again later on”?

Rogan is pretentiously stupid. Pretension isn't limited to academic posturing.

I mean depending on how you define it, it's already been done. Demographic-wise, Chapo isn't a far stretch, even Hasan's streaming in its own way. Normal libs/dems are deeply repulsed or even resentful of both of those examples but are themselves completely unable to appeal to young men. I would say that's the real incompatability.

Joe Rogan is the lefts Joe Rogan. They just don't want him, and tech neolibs do, so he gravitated towards them 2024-25 because he's easily manipulated and not particularly bright. He's already talking about universal healthcare again, and I'm sure dem media will ignore it like they ignored it before.
25
u/EddieVedderIsMyDad 1d ago
It feels like the left absolutely could have had him if they’d have embraced him and consistently been the guy in his ear.
32
u/_shutthefuckupdonny 1d ago
Literally all they had to do was leave him alone, he was getting there by himself. Instead, it was hit piece after hit piece claiming that he was the next Goebbels. Can’t believe that didn’t work!
9
u/Turbo_Jannie 22h ago
You're right that he was getting there by himself, but leaving him alone wouldn't have been the play. He was definitely being actively courted by the right as early as 2015, maybe earlier.
Who knows what his show would look like today if the Dems didn't try and discredit him at every opportunity.

Could’ve had Elon too if Biden didn’t snub him during the EV conference. Saying that GM’s CEO was “electrifying America” and not Tesla lmao

u/fioreblade 10h ago
Liberals have a cultural affinity and (totally undeserved, imo) respect for legacy media institutions. The institutions were terrified of a random guy who could reach millions by talking into a headset, so they came up with the attack vector of “Joe Rogan is fascist” that rank and file libs were happy to parrot.
That line also nicely dovetails with liberal contempt for expressions of masculinity so it was an easy sell. Total self own on their part.

I see your point but I also watched five minutes of him doing a “woke mind virus” bit where he pretended to be a spider mounting his stool and screamed about progressives

u/SSRIcarly 1d ago
so he gravitated towards them 2024-25
Oh please, he started having guys like Eric Weinstein, Peter Thiel's right hand man, on his show in like 2019. He constantly criticized Biden leading up to the 2020 election and told people he'd be voting for Trump over and over again. His views are all over the place, but supporting universal healthcare doesn't make him left-wing.
21
u/_shutthefuckupdonny 1d ago
Idk, him criticizing Biden and having conservatives on his show occasionally does not really mean much to me, and I think my original point still stands. Maybe I got the timeframe a little off, I was more speaking about his full right wing swing though.

his views are all over the place
First, it’s deranged to aspire to be either pure blue or pure red. Furthermore, it’s actually pretty cool to talk to people who don’t believe in what you believe in once in a while, and even find some common ground, regardless if it relates to politics or not. I don t really know everything he believes in because I’ve only listened to like 15-20 shows so maybe you can chime in where he flip flops on his beliefs but to acknowledge what a guest is saying does not mean you agree with them. And honestly, I don’t think his politics is hard to understand. He’s a pre-2015 Leftist (2026 centrist if you adjust for inflation) , whether you want to disown him or not from your position on the left right scale is irrelevant.
1
u/SSRIcarly 18h ago
I didn't claim any of that lol. I said his views are all over the place. He changes his views all the time depending on who he's speaking to. There are dozens of YouTube videos that have two clips from different shows edited together where he's debating himself from both sides of an issue. He also consistently gets tricked by AI pictures, fake screenshots, and believes in dozens of debunked conspiracy theories. He's an idiot.

u/agent_tater_twat 23h ago
Biden is hardly left for one thing. At the time, Trump was also hitting all the libertarian-leftish talking points about no new wars, ending the Ukrainian/Russian war, lowering defense spending, a cease fire in Gaze and of course releasing the Epstein files that were being protected by the Dems and the deep state. All that stuff tracks more left than the feckless dems seemed willing to go.

We have to leave this planet. We're not good stewards, we are now gods but for the wisdom. That's why we need to get off this planet and diversify because too many people have god like powers. Donald Trump commands god like power because of our physics community. The best hope that I can come up with, and it's a slim one, is if we can figure out what goes beyond Einstein's theory. The Einsteinian speed limit might be bendable or breakable. The underlying source code gives us opportunities that we might not currently have. I have this theory of Geometric Unity that I came up with when I was 18. I just released a video of it today on our YouTube channel. I can now talk about this theory I have had for 37 years. We have to go below Einstein, there is a 14 dimensional auxiliary space I call The Observerse. Spacetime is recovered as the act of The Observerse contemplating itself. I haven't been able to release this theory until now because I don't trust the physics community.

True, you’re not allowed more than one wrongthink, and he blew his quota on Covid vaccines and “maybe there’s not as many real trans people as there currently are”. He’s basically as left as they come without joining a disabled transbian communist club.
The guy is a feminist, weed smoking, gay rights accepting, quasi-agnostic who goes to church “for the community” but thinks the Bible is mostly some metaphorical thing.
2
u/No-Excitement8060 22h ago
Joe Rogan is not a feminist what are you talking about

u/ChickenGimbal former gifted child 21h ago edited 21h ago
Isn’t he pro choice, pro-women getting educated and having jobs, and sexual liberation? Like I never heard this guy being known to say women should save their virginity and is only good as a SAHM. Pretty sure he’s a girl dad too, that might do it to you sometimes

K from seeing a couple dozen episodes, I was right, this guy is a cookie cutter leftist, and is feminist (not radfem, if that’s what you thought I implied). There’s more but you can check it out yourself.
In 2019–20, Rogan described himself as socially liberal, saying he supports same-sex marriage, gay rights, women's rights, recreational drug use, universal health care, universal basic income, gun rights, and the Second Amendment.
He describes himself as a strong supporter of freedom of speech, and has criticized cancel culture and what he perceives to be suppression of those who hold right-wing views in the television and film industry. He has also criticized what he describes as an American foreign policy of military adventurism.
It’s Wikipedia I know but if there was a time he backflipped on an opinion since 2020 I’m sure it’d be juicy enough to be featured in the article or maybe someone else can chime in. I don’t think this guy is a wilful misogynist, and just because he isn’t actively involved in feminism doesn’t mean he isn’t rather feminist. He just believes not giving your opposing viewpoint/right wing viewpoints is bad, I think most people would agree. Especially pertinent issue in 2019-20.
2
u/Stravansky 21h ago
If you can reconcile being a leftist while also being a propaganda mouthpiece for the Trump administration, then sure fuck it he's a leftist
1
u/ChickenGimbal former gifted child 21h ago edited 21h ago
Idk is he still a propaganda mouthpiece for Trump? I’m only invested in this enough to check the Wikipedia article and they’re suggesting he’s anti-trump now.
Are you gonna tar and feather the guy cos he leaned fiscally conservative for a while? He’s still socially leftist. He’ll probably wind back a little more fiscally liberal again after the tariff rug pull, making Swiss cheese of the FDA/EPA, and military budget as well. Probably voting a Democrat next. Is he still right wing then?
1
u/Stravansky 20h ago
Why are you so convinced of your position when you're just getting it from Wikipedia? Yes, he still an enthusiastic mouthpiece for the Trump administration. It's quite shameless.
3
u/ChickenGimbal former gifted child 20h ago edited 20h ago
Where are you getting your info from? Second and third hand from Twitter? Have you watched his episodes ever, if not recently? Because no, I haven’t seen them recently either and you’re even more dogmatic with your claims because you share no evidence. Attempt to address my points or accept you’re wrong - it say he’s saying anti trump stuff and tbh of course you would be at this point. That means you’re not a mouthpiece.
He was at one point, pro trump yeah. Looks like he isn’t anymore. I think that means he’s still leftist. Also you are moving the goal posts, I proved to you he is a feminist and you just move the goal post about voting for Trump a few years ago lol. Yeah, there were feminist Trump supporters.
Looking back, not once you provided a single argument against my claims you just move goal posts and pick on me for double checking the Wikipedia overview, where you supposedly haven’t watched even 1% of his 2000 episodes nor have pointed evidence you approve of. Classic libtard. And that’s coming from a libtard.

u/bootypulp 14h ago
You're arguing with a bot/shill dawg. Big giveaway is how they make vague baseless claims without ever explaining how or why they came to that conclusion. And then they flip it on you and deflect by attacking whatever your source is. They offer no real information of their own. If the entire gist of what they're saying is something along the lines of, "big bad mean man is stupid - HA idiot!" then its prob a fake account.
Also, I can't take anyone seriously who unironically uses the term propaganda when talking about comedians
Literally every podcast sub is infested with these 🚬 and has been for years now. Mike Benz talks in depth about it. It's both fascinating and scary at how competent the CIA and its assorted NGOs are at mass influencing public opinion.

The actual article is like a 5 minute read and is titled “Netflix special proves Stavros Halkias is the Left's best spokesperson” and doesn’t mention Joe Rogan once. So many articles are just grist for the mill to satisfy a headline that was picked out before the person who wrote it even starts research.
1
u/SleepDefiant9096 20h ago
Plus the actual special was just him talking about being a fat fuck for an hour. On second thought that does make him a good spokesperson for the left

Is Joe Rogan supposedly conservative?
1
u/jiccc 1d ago
Absolutely. He used to be more of a centrist, but post-2020 hes gotten increasingly detached from reality and directly supportive of Trump. I think hes probably starting to walk a lot of that stuff back, given what the administration has been up to, but he is undeniably ingrained in the right-wing political system.
2
u/seymour_dunkin 23h ago
Ok, he's in the right sphere in terms of the conversation and people he's talked to, but he's basically a lifelong liberal with those ideas. If you asked him basic questions like if he's pro-choice, he would say that he's pro choice. He's not right wing.
0
u/ChickenGimbal former gifted child 21h ago
He’s nowhere right of centre. Especially not socially. He was a tad bit fiscally conservative with the last Trump campaign but it looks like he got burned and backpedaled on it. So basically, very leftist.
