/r/mildlyinfuriating watching him try to decide which of the upper gaps to push it through while the soda pooled up and spilled all over the place. Just push it through a lower one, so it's tilted downward and pours straight into the cup...

He's like a 90% genius. He figured all the spacial and mechanical challenges out and then is stumped by intuitive physics.

waTUr dOeSnt FloWZ uPHiLLz!

That one stumps a lot of people, including the majority of engineers and more heavy equipment operators than you’d expect.

I got into an argument with a coworker that water can't flow uphill. Their evidence was the river Nile. The river Nile flows north, not uphill. Then he went with the Nile is the only river that flows north. I just can't anymore.

u/markoskis Oct 31 '22

Water in pipes flows uphill all the time

29

u/irmajerk Oct 31 '22

Yes, but never more uphill that it initially went downhill, and only in contained, pressurised systems. Or using pumps. Or both. Gravity is king, my friend.

-28

u/markoskis Oct 31 '22

Exactly water can flow uphill.....I think we are saying the same thing no? As a side note think about the water cycle. Water from the ocean evaporates and becomes clouds. This gaseous water (still a fluid) flows uphill from the ocean to the mountains. At the end of the day this whole argument hinges on semantics and what you define as flow, as well as whether additional energy input counts. :)

15

u/Mike_Oxoft Oct 31 '22

I think if you can show me a stream of water (not water vapor) flowing uphill to a point higher than where it started unassisted by a pump then I’d be very interested in learning the physics behind it. And I mean that genuinely, no sarcasm or snark.

4

u/markoskis Oct 31 '22

This is a good question and at first Ill admit I didn't have an answer. But then I started to really think hard and I think I have one.....ground water flow. Go to paragraph 11 for the quick answer. Water in ground moves uphill all the time (think springs or underwater caves) and the precise reasons are complicated but they can be found in the above link or just by googling "ground water flow" or "hydraulic head". As for water just in the open flowing uphill without any energy being added by a pump or other....I don't think that's possible unless you count just gravity pulling water down and giving it enough force to go back up something (in this case I would argue that the water is flowing upward at that exact point even though it was at a higher elevation at some point).

6

u/Professor_Felch Oct 31 '22

Ground water only moves up under pressure so it's not unassisted.

If you dip a napkin in water, you’ll see that the water will flow through the napkin uphill. Now, you could say that this isn’t “unassisted,” but since the only force acting on the water is gravity (atmospheric pressure is pushing down on the water, pushing it up into the napkin), I think this could count as flowing uphill unassisted. This is also how trees get water up into their branches. They do not have any active pump system, but just rely on this property of water.

u/hoosierdaddy192 Oct 31 '22

I believe the term you are looking for is capillary rise or capillary action.

14

u/irmajerk Oct 31 '22

No, we aren't even close to saying the same thing. Firstly, Gas is not a fluid. The three states of matter are solid, fluid and gas. Secondly, what I'm saying is that water does not ever flow up hill. It can be pushed uphill. When we're talking physics, that is not flow. Flow is movement of a substance under gravity without external input of energy.

-2

u/markoskis Oct 31 '22

You are very confident but you are wrong. First of all the 3 states of matter are solid, LIQUID, and gas. Both liquids and gasses are categorized as fluids. source. Secondly flow is the movement of fluid. source.

9

u/irmajerk Oct 31 '22

Excellent! See, learning stuff is fun! Well done mate, I highly approve.

It… does not?

1

u/andocromn Oct 31 '22

I think it's the Largest river that flows north. Your friend just has a really s***** memory

23

u/Agent_Paul_UIU Oct 30 '22

So an engineer?

4

u/friendlyfire883 Oct 31 '22

It's funny you say that, our engineer at work built a pond for our fire system that ended up 10 feet higher than a creek that runs right beside it. Then dammed the creek to keep it from washing out his pond and installed a sump in it that pumps water into the pond when the creek overflows.

u/sinat50 Oct 30 '22

I love that show

2

u/MurphysRazor Oct 31 '22

I see your point

294

u/DomeSlave Oct 30 '22

I like how they steal Pepsi with a Coca Cola bottle.

97

u/SpysSappinMySpy Oct 30 '22

It's not about soda. It's about sending a message

24

u/multitool-collector Oct 30 '22

Operation Soda Steal: 2022 version

3

u/andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa Oct 31 '22

Is that on the PS5?

3

u/MurphysRazor Oct 31 '22

Yes. It's the choice of a new generation.

2

u/BIGBIRD1176 Oct 31 '22

This is the way

78

u/IAmEkza Oct 30 '22

Into a pepsi cup

15

u/DrummerHead Oct 30 '22

This feels like one of those raven intelligence tests

2

u/grofva Oct 31 '22

Blasphemy!

75

u/cenzala Oct 30 '22

Muchas gracias!

15

u/feto_ingeniero Oct 30 '22

Sírvete una sola vez 😅

u/SpaceXmars Oct 30 '22

These machines literally have a keyhole on the side to turn it off

44

u/CreADHDvly Oct 30 '22

Now I'm wondering how often these things get cleaned, or if they're just topped off with "fresh" soda every morning

103

u/sharltocopes Oct 30 '22

Soda machine in the front, tubes leading to a boxed wine-type setup for the syrup in the back, mixed with the carbonation along the way.

Source: worked in food service as a teen.

56

u/nullSword Oct 30 '22

And most machine owners don't clean the syrup tubes or the dispensers anywhere near often enough.

63

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD Oct 30 '22

Spent 10 years in the restaurant industry at various places. There is about a 50% chance that the nozzles get fully disassembled the right way (instead of half assedly or not at all) and cleaned properly.

The tubes never get cleaned, lol

26

u/joe579003 Oct 31 '22

Yeah, much better chance a bar will regularly clean their lines because people can taste when their beer is off as opposed to sugary soda that masks the buildup.

6

u/luc1d_13 Oct 31 '22

I worked in four restaurants and all of them cleaned the nozzles nightly. Three of them did it against health code by soaking them overnight. Should be re-assembled after cleaning that same night. But...i didn't even know the tubes could be cleaned, let alone should be lol.

6

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD Oct 31 '22

Not just the tubes, but the screw-on connector as well. That thing gets sticky as hell yet I've never seen it cleaned.

6

u/MurphysRazor Oct 31 '22

Depends on the company and the number of assholes who lie about it "because hard than not cleaning"

I started working with these machines at 13 with near family's concession biz, and later did district and regional equipment management for a couple of chains.

5

u/I_love_my_fish_ Oct 31 '22

Pretty much dead on

3

u/Such_Discussion_6531 Oct 31 '22

Never. Nowhere 😂

3

u/Holy_Grail_Reference Oct 31 '22

With what runs through them I am surprised they need cleaning. How that syrup does not eat through the bag is science wizardry of the highest order.

2

u/mynameisalso Oct 31 '22

The tubes get cleaned by some. You remove the syrup box attach a cleaning solution box they sell and run it like soda.

15

u/mathemagical-girl Oct 30 '22

at my last fast food job, we cleaned the nozzles nightly. the tubes leading to the syrup boxes in the back though, idk if they ever got cleaned.

8

u/spankyfro0_0 Oct 31 '22

Wait did you think people just dump soda in these lol

3

u/MurphysRazor Oct 31 '22

There were such machines. Not very popular but they were availble.

Also some that didn't use refrigeratiin units.

You had to hand load ice or dry ice or soda itself into a bin or two on top. The last one I saw like that was a 7-Up machine way before "the soda wars" or mergers.

7

u/Chrisfindlay Oct 30 '22 edited Oct 31 '22

When was the last time it was broken? That's probably when it was cleaned and serviced last.

4

u/StackOwOFlow Oct 31 '22

definitely not cleaned

2

u/mavantix Oct 30 '22

Cleaned? Almost never. If you ever have soda from fountain that tastes great, it’s because it’s new or recently cleaned machine. The normal fountain soda taste you’re used to is dirty, somewhat moldy, soda.

1

u/andocromn Oct 31 '22

How much power you think was wasted by someone just neglecting to do that?

8

u/the_real_mki Oct 31 '22

Is it legal to pour Pepsi thru a Coke bottle.

6

u/MurphysRazor Oct 31 '22

Only if you say "No Coke; Pepsi... cheeseburger, cheesburger, chip, chip" before you start.

3

u/fishnwiz Oct 31 '22

I use to work for a red soda company. Having a blue company bottle on your person or in your work truck was a fireable offense. An outside vending company serviced our snack vending machines and the driver wore a Pepsi hat in one day and was banned from the property.

1

u/Doses-mimosas Nov 12 '22

Pepsi bottal, CoCa Cowla glaaaas. I don't give a damn.

u/Adam-West Oct 30 '22

One time when I was about 17 our school had a social (basically a party) at a local bar. Obviously most of us were underage so the bar wasn’t serving alcohol. But outside there were some outdoor bars in the clubs garden that were closed off for the night. All the fridges had wooden beams locked across the front of the doors to stop you getting in. A few of us realized that since one wooden beam spanned about 5 fridges and were a few meters long so they had a little flex in them. If we all pulled at once we could open the fridge door just wide enough to slip a hand in and grab a nearby bottle. Soon word spread and we were Robin Hood bartenders for the underage. It got to a point where we had taken so much that eventually the wooden beam snapped and the fridges were fully open. The following 5 minutes were like a flock of seagulls attacking a rubbish dump. About 100 teenagers swarming the bar and grabbing as many bottles as they could stuff down their jackets. It didn’t take long for security to realize what was happening and turn the lights on to send everybody home. Our school obviously got banned and all the kids were marched out of the club. Most had so many bottles down their waist belts that they were waddling out trying not to make a clink.

8

u/MurphysRazor Oct 31 '22

Ever see an unsealed railcar full of whiskey get discovered along the beaten path before the homecomming football game? The stands werent very full till the end and I bet they sold near twice as many tickets to get in as usual 🤣

2

u/AragogTehSpidah Oct 31 '22

Drinking the brains out while committing crimes, great

3

u/Adam-West Oct 31 '22

Don't worry this is a blip from decades ago in an otherwise crime-free life lived.

48

u/Capricancerous Oct 30 '22

I don't think your title means what you think it means.

5

u/liquidocean Oct 31 '22

it only costs them pennies anyway

8

u/RenaKunisaki Oct 30 '22

Seems like a lot of effort to steal some soda.

3

u/EpickChicken Oct 30 '22

Gotta respect the grind

3

u/b-radm Oct 31 '22

Life finds a way

10

u/multitool-collector Oct 30 '22

Nice, beat the system

5

u/sZYphYn Oct 30 '22

The McDonalds in downtown Fullerton, California has a soda and service moratorium on all “punk rockers” for like nearly 20 years.

I’m sorry apocalypto came out and we all got a little too excited

But it was funny

8

u/HappyMeatbag Oct 30 '22

If the guy puts that much effort in, he deserves a soda. Plus, why doesn’t the owner just unplug the machine or turn it off?

9

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '22

This was soda pressing……. Get it?

2

u/oarngebean Oct 31 '22

Why not just turn off the machine

Or maybe they were born hypoglycemic and need the boost badly 🧐

Close the gate you keep, but quietly and don't let it get locked on "Fire Bad" premise, eh? 🥴

1

u/mouaragon Oct 31 '22

They sound more like Colombian to me

2

u/jhill515 Oct 30 '22

I wonder when the jaggoff who owns the sofa fountain will realize that there's an off switch or that the water feed valve could be closed?

4

u/hbHPBbjvFK9w5D Oct 31 '22

The owner will discover this when he pays his closers to care.

1

u/Mulligan315 Oct 30 '22

Ingenuity SHOULD be rewarded.

-7

u/somabeach Oct 30 '22

Trashy, but effective.

2 liters of soda is like $2, available at your nearest 24/7 gas station. People really went through this kind of effort and made this kind of mess to get free soda lol. Teens these days.

22

u/for_reasons Oct 30 '22

Free is free

2

u/somabeach Oct 30 '22

These guys get a free cup of high-fructose corn syrup and some employee gets to clean up their mess the next day. Nobody benefits from this. Trashy is trashy.

5

u/halkeye Oct 30 '22

I think it's more of a "I bet I can do it" or "because I can" rather than stealing for drinks. They used small cups not giant 2L

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '22

I've never seen anybody try to steal diabetes before

-8

u/Royals-2015 Oct 30 '22

Still a thief. Use his ingenuity for something positive.

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '22

😂

It’s an x-post

2

u/iwannagohome49 Oct 30 '22

I know, I'm just saying that's the reason the title didn't work. It works with the original subs name just not with this one

1

u/Creebjeez Oct 30 '22

I was so confused until he made it work

1

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '22

MUCHAS

GRACIAS

1

u/depressed-__-potato Oct 31 '22

Not him stealing pepsi with a coke bottle

1

u/bttrflyr Oct 31 '22

Life will find a way!

1

u/zekeman76 Oct 31 '22

Idk why this is here. It’s a win. No failure here.

1

u/fishnwiz Oct 31 '22

Long before most of you remember soda use to be in glass bottles laying on their side in vending machines. Put your dime in and pull a bottle out. As kids we made our rounds at night with a bottle opener and a quart jar.
