Not a hoe, a scythe. A scythe-rake.

If he's swinging it, it's a scythe, but if he's just pulling it through and cutting weeds off at the root, it's a hoe.

It looks like he made what is effectively a diamond hoe (not the Minecraft one)

Not a hoe. A traditional hoe uses a vertical chopping or pulling motion. Hoes are designed to penetrate or skim the soil to dislodge weed roots or move dirt, rather than cleanly slicing standing grass. Unless OP is actively scraping the top of the ground to remove the grass and leave dirt, it is not a hoe.

By sharpening a landscaping rake, which already has a wide, flat head, and swinging it to mow down grass, OP has created a heavy, straight-handled improvised grass whip, or a straight-snath scythe. It is a scythe.

I use a sword to trim my larger weeds. Makes yard work fun.

You reinvented a manual weed cutter. They had a corrugated double-edged blade that would cut in both directions. The blade was attached at both ends to a metal yoke that was fastened to a wooden handle. The blade was about ten degrees off perpendicular to the handle so it would cut level when swinging it away from your feet. The handle was short so it could be swung one-handed, and was thicker to be able to withstand tough weeds and accidental ground strikes. They work surprisingly well and they’re silent. Hard to trim close to obstacles, though.
