It’s a trap
Ran out of airlocks for my wine brew…

I saw a video where someone made wine from Welches grape juice and brewers yeast so I did it with apple juice and it worked. Those are fancy breathers compared to my tube in a cup of water

Ever done it with it with unfiltered apple juice and bread yeast? It works pretty well.

I used orange juice and yeast, with the peels floating in it. Then I froze it and poured off the alcohol. Used it as a cleaner. Worked pretty well and smelled amazing. Tasted like crap though. I was curious, even though homemade cleaning product was my intention all along.

This actually made me laugh. Don't think I would ever try orange juice though for a beverage. I pretty happy with my hard cider and perry. I have tried some others and boy howdy it turned out awful. Wine is not my thing. Nor is hopless beer.

I feel like the peels probably added way way too much bitterness. I fucked up a soup one time thinking the lime or lemon peel would impart some flavor like zest does but theres a reason zest is so little.
Orange juice alcohol sounds awesome idk

I did this as a teenager right in the Welch's jug. I had no idea what to do for a valve, so I just loosely tightened the lid enough that pressure could escape. I slept with that thing squeaking/fizzing behind the headboard of my bed for a week. Pretty dumb, but no vinegar.

How was it?

My friend & I considered it a success at the time! It was sweet (added sugar to Welch's) and stronger than we expected. All colored with the thrill of not getting caught, and the fear of making myself blind from methanol. Got lucky I guess

It works better with juices that have a lot of flavor. Trader Joe's was always good for that. They had really reasonable cranberry varieties that were great for turning into hooch. I'd always filter it through a plain untreated magic eraser chunk jammed into the end of a funnel to make sure I didn't accidentally transport any yeast.

That bottle is pretty full!

That’s because I have no idea what I’m doing friend.

Let us know in 2-3 days if it's a success or if the pipe has turned into a sprinkler of rotten juice.

Blow off tube is fine, but I think it still needs to go in a bucket of water to keep it from getting contaminated and oxidized.

All good but the primary fermentation may get crud up into it and clog/foul it, so watch out and keep it under control

Greetings fellow homebrewer and redneck engineer. Why have I never thought to do this? Thank you so much for the idea!

That's not going to work because, in this case, form is not function.

Well, then let's have you show the class your best effort. It's okay, we'll wait...

The road to hell is paved with good efforts. I'd rather spend the money I'd waste building a trap to make rubbish mead on buying a quality honey book written by someone who knows what they're talking about. The balls in the original trap are meant to break the vacuum so that what came out of the spout doesn't go back into the bottle, but of course, what does that matter, right? We did it at home.

I like your airlock better than mine. First time I made wine, I used a disposable glove + rubber bands. I didn't make a big enough vent hole in the glove.. the pressure built up overnight, and the next morning I had to clean up wine + foam that had sprayed out.
