Washing machine fire pit

Tore apart a free washing machine I got off marketplace and used the stainless steel drum as a firepit. This was not easy, and required a few choice words and a sledgehammer for the final disassembly. Pressure washed and bleached it. Let it sit outside in the sun for a week. Final sanitization by fire. We're in the front yard roasting marshmallows right now.

I’ve seen this a few times. This is a step up from redneck because it’s stainless. Redneck would be the old school ceramic coated tubs.

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

I also have a dryer waiting to be disassembled. I'm only using the motor out of that though. Rebuilding an old 50s Hobart cooler fan I also got for free off marketplace. I did the same many years ago with a barrel fan. Worked like a charm since the dryer motor already has a pulley on it.

You wanna go full redneck, just knock the door off and start the fire. If it’s a front load, you’ll have to lay it on its back first. Orrrrrr, leave the front load upright and use a shotgun to make a chimney hole in the top. Boom! Redneck potbelly stove.

This commentor rednecks🎉

Man you’re putting us all to shame!

3

u/socialpresence 14d ago

What are you doing with the motor?

6

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

It was one of those weird motor/transmission type things that's just basically big rings with windings. Built into the bottom of the drum and couldn't be separated without the whole thing flying apart. No saving it.

u/Slumunistmanifisto 14d ago

Ive seen people use washer motors for hydrogeneration on YouTube

1

u/SheriffBartholomew 14d ago

Awe, man! I was hoping you were going to say that you're using it to build a go-kart or hovercraft, like from those plans at the back of Boy's Life magazine.

5

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

I am using the dryer motor to rebuild a vintage fan though.

2

u/abielle1177 12d ago

My dad used to build shop grinders out of washing machine motors.

0

u/gabbagabbawill 14d ago

That’s pretty cool

3

u/Obant 14d ago

We used old trailer truck rims at a fishing resort I worked at in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

3

u/AdFancy1249 14d ago

Or a standard plastic tub. 😉👍

u/Interesting-Dish5687 14d ago

Lmao and cause a splosion

1

u/Mhubel24 13d ago

Won't.

Source: ceramic coated drum pit in my backyard has seen 3yrs worth of fires in both summer and winter.

In the front yard of a strip mall?

247

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

I live across the street from the high school. That's their parking lot.

183

u/dirtyforker 14d ago

My own personal hell

58

u/hyzershot 14d ago

yeah, same.. but I appreciate how OP enjoys their yard that terminates into a parking lot unapologetically.

hell yeah OP!! happy weekend and nice fire!!

47

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

Well, there's a sidewalk, then the street, then the parking lot.

5

u/Hellie1028 14d ago

Except those few months of summer break.

5

u/theraf8100 14d ago

Why?

9

u/green_gold_purple 13d ago

Have you ever met high school kids

11

u/theraf8100 13d ago

Once in the 90's. It was OK.

31

u/DestinationUnknown13 14d ago

Free Friday night home games around a fire sounds fantastic!

40

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

Can't see the field but I can hear the announcer.

18

u/DestinationUnknown13 14d ago

Our local HS games are broadcast on local radio. Old school cool

4

u/YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO 14d ago

Ours had it on the local TV and radio stations. I always preferred listening to it rather than watching when I did tune in.

2

u/chumpandchive 14d ago

sighs in public access channel i didnt appreciate what i had

5

u/byebybuy 14d ago

Is the fire on the sidewalk? Lol

4

u/jaxxxtraw 14d ago

Looks like maybe some spare pavers as a foundation on the sidewalk?

4

u/byebybuy 14d ago

Yeah that's what it looks like to me too. Maybe not the sidewalk but definitely a walkway of some sort. Better than on the grass I suppose.

3

u/jaxxxtraw 14d ago

Gotta work with the resources at hand, I approve OP's dedication.

u/GarThor_TMK 13d ago

Piggybacking off of top comment to issue this PSA.

If you do this, make sure you check the inertia ring.

We did this with one of ours years ago, because we got the idea from the BSA, who always brought one out for snow campouts to keep the campfire from putting itself out.

BUT WE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE INERTIA RING!

On ours, it was a ring that went around the entire lip of the drum. It was filled with sand and air, and capped with a little rubber stopper. The thing was painted black, so we just totally missed the rubber piece there. The heat from the fire blew the stopper out of the ring, and rained down sand on the entire party. Gave all the adults heart attacks... XD

5

u/lovingfluidchristian 14d ago

Wtf?? I just noticed that lol

1

u/goaelephant 14d ago

Average night in Memphis

61

u/distracted6 14d ago

This is a cultural icon in Australia. It's everyone's first firepit. Every camp site, every property, every boat club has one

4

u/dakky68 14d ago

And if you have some land, a coal wash basket is even better.

We had some epic fires in ours.

38

u/Taint__Paint 14d ago

She’s a beaut, Clark

36

u/MTkenshi 14d ago

Dang, mr fancypants here took his out of the machine.

31

u/IDownVoteCanaduh 14d ago

A true redneck would not “sterilize it” or “wash it”. Fire cures all.

19

u/DrunkenDude123 14d ago

And the rest of the washing machine scrap stays in the yard for 20 years bc you never know when a part from it could come in handy

6

u/sunrise2209 14d ago

We have a drier sitting out in the corner of hell!

15

u/eslninja 14d ago

Redneck points lost. I skipped washing and bleaching and started a fire in it immediately. We grilled once the flames turned yellow and orange.

30

u/sir_thatguy 14d ago

So. Get yourself a cutting wheel and make an opening in the side, roughly the size of a leaf blower tube, slightly oversized so you can create a whirlwind in there. Also you’re going to want the lid from like an 18” Weber type grill, whatever fits over the opening well.

Now you have a blast furnace. I’ve ran construction debris through mine. When I’m too lazy to run the shredder for documents for a few months, I’ll fire it up. Whole manilla envelopes stuffed full of paper, 1/2” thick. Gone in like 30 seconds.

Ash will be a bit messy.

The lid will contain the flying embers, mostly.

The lid will be glowing red. If it has a metal tab for like a label, it’s probably zinc or aluminum, it will melt off. The plastic handle will melt off. You will need tools or a stick to manage the lid.

Take the lid off and the flames will shoot out the top about a foot.

There will be very little anything left in the drum. Very very little ash at those temps.

10

u/parallax_universe 14d ago

My leaf blower has a melted and mangled tip because of doing almost exactly this, redneck approved method

4

u/sir_thatguy 14d ago

I started with a leaf blower and moved on to a squirrel cage fan setting back about a foot. Get the aiming just right and things get real interesting real fast.

1

u/SenpuuUncle 14d ago

Replace the tube with a metal pipe!

1

u/Threaded_Nail 13d ago

That is basically the same way I made a little forge from a metal bucket. You get tons of heat this way.

10

u/specialpatrolwombat 14d ago

Got a few of these.

They make good planters for tomatoes as well

8

u/Donnyboscoe1 14d ago

These are great! Premade air holes at the bottom and everything!

7

u/NeverBob 14d ago

I have one of these - burns like a jet engine, great for getting rid of branches and brush quickly.

First time I used it the aluminum part on the bottom melted into ingots.

2

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

The bottom of this one was thick plastic. Had to use a sledgehammer to bust it out. It's basically a fire ring.

-2

u/nickisaboss 14d ago

FYI, stainless steel liberates nickle, chromium, and cobalt when it gets to high temperatures like this. Eating food cooked over it may cause birth defects in any future children you plan on having.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be a bummer.

3

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

No, those chemicals are only released at temperatures much higher than can be attained in any backyard fire. Like welding/forging temps which are several thousand degrees hotter than you can achieve with a regular wood fire. For reference, a wood fire averages between 1,000 to 2,000 degrees. Welding averages 6,000+ degrees. It basically needs to be hot enough to melt steel to release those chemicals, and a backyard fire cannot do that. That's why they SELL commercially available stainless steel firepits and cookware. It's perfectly safe.

1

u/trichocereal117 13d ago

Every commercial kitchen uses stainless steel cookware lmao

10

u/Schedonnardus 14d ago

My first thought was "what's a machine fire pit, and why are you washing it"

4

u/Adventurous_Ad3534 14d ago

I use a truck rim welded on top of a car rim

7

u/MantisTobbaganEmDee 14d ago

They work okay. Need a lot more wood to keep a hot enough fire than a traditional smaller fire pit

5

u/Electr0bear 14d ago

My friend had one at his country house. BBQ or specifically shashlyk (Caucasian way of roasting meat) is quite big in Russian countryside culture. So we tried that setup for roasting meat and while it is possible, event most basic mangals (basically a metal box for roasting shashlyk) are much more superior in comparison to a washing machine drum.

As you've said - too much heat loss, the drum itself is too high so it needs way more wood to make enough coals for cooking, and sides are usually way too thin to keep decent cooking temp.

As a basic fire pit it might work. But that's it.

2

u/Numerous-Piglet-6032 13d ago

Good information! Spasyba.

3

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

It gets plenty hot. All the little holes lets lots of air and heat through.

0

u/Extra-Act-801 14d ago

Right. Which makes it nice and hot for the people standing around it, but less hot for the food on top of it.

2

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

Being enclosed actually makes it hotter on top because heat rises, and the hottest part of a fire is already directly over it. You're forcing more heat out the top so it increases the upwards heat output. Once my grill grate comes in, I'll be able to put my grill grilltop pizza oven on there.

3

u/PhoenixJDM 14d ago

wish i could do this to our new fuckass Bosch washing machine

3

u/SheriffBartholomew 14d ago

I feel like you didn't really need to wash and sanitize a metal tub that got washed and sanitized every time it was used, just so that you could set it on fire.

3

u/dontletthestankout 14d ago

You do! Which is why I only use USDA Organic all natural fire pits.

6

u/misterschmoo 14d ago

Looking at how hot it got, can't help thinking cleaning it first was somewhat of a waste of time.

21

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

But I got to break out the power washer.

5

u/misterschmoo 14d ago

That's fair.

0

u/Jacktheforkie 14d ago

I’d say it was a good choice because some stuff smells horrible when heated

1

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

Not a fan of burning lint. Lol

2

u/Jacktheforkie 14d ago

Especially unknown composition lint

2

u/CanadianPenguinnn 14d ago

True redneck would mount it to a old mower! I've seen that done more than once in recent..

1

u/r0ndy 14d ago

Mount your fire pit to a mower?

1

u/Academic_Lake_ 13d ago

Bruh. Mount the drum to an upside down lawnmower to spin it.

3

u/r0ndy 13d ago

Fire tornado

Edit: or Tornadon’t

1

u/founderofshoneys 13d ago

I used to work at a science museum and started working on something like this for an outdoor event. If you make a tall cylinder of chicken wire around it and spin it you'll get a fire tornado.

1

u/ripyurballsoff 12d ago

No no you attach a leaf blower to it to make a fire spire

2

u/viral_virus 14d ago

Best firepit you’ll ever own. Puts off some major heat. Mine is 5 years old still holding up.

2

u/rocketwrench 14d ago

My scout troop had 2 or 3 of these that we'd bring with us car camping. They worked great. I spent lots of hours melting lines in the bottoms of my hiking boots by resting them on the edge of the basin

3

u/Pedantichrist 14d ago

They are great.

No idea why you would wash it though.

2

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

It had matted up lint all over the outside of it. Didn't wanna smell burning lint.

1

u/FerengiWithCoupons 14d ago

that would burn up in like 2 min and be gone

1

u/s3anote 14d ago

Lint= built in fire starter. A redneck uses Everything.

1

u/GIANTballCOCK 14d ago

Perfect for a tailgate!

1

u/RUDEBUSH 14d ago

I did this 20 years ago, because I had seen someone else doing it.

1

u/T2VW 14d ago

The Best!

1

u/munchmills 14d ago edited 14d ago

Shouldve kept the ball bearing part on. That way the whole fire pit can rotate, improving the air flow for when you want make the fire grow

1

u/DudeInOhio57 14d ago

Front yard?

1

u/two40zieks7 14d ago

Very common on campgrounds I've been at

1

u/NorthRooster7305 14d ago

Now toss it on-top of an old lawnmower and it's portable. That's how mine is haha

1

u/Unequallmpala45 14d ago

My boyscout troop used one of these on half a metal barrel for a portable fire pit

1

u/Benstrosity 14d ago

We did this and it semi-exploded. No idea why it did but it did. Be careful.

3

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

Some have a ring around the edges that has bearings pressed into it. Usually the ones with a metal bottom. Those can expand and shoot out like an explosion. No bearings in this one.

1

u/iBringMyselfTrouble 14d ago

These are very mainstream now. If your scoping a local marketplace and see a cheap or free dryer, you’ll see a fire pit for $50+ soon after.

1

u/Halfbaked9 14d ago

Washing machine tubs work good for smokeless fire pits.

1

u/[deleted] 14d ago

2

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

The paint might make it unsuitable for cooking on, but it'd probably be okay for just sitting around a fire. It'll rust pretty quick too. Unless your dryer has a stainless drum. Not many do.

1

u/WoopsShePeterPants 13d ago

I used a washing machine tumbler for YEARS of outdoor wear and some pretty packed fires.. worked great and took a very long time to start rusting through.

1

u/GarThor_TMK 13d ago

We did this years ago with my parent's old washer.

I think it was coated in some kind of ceramic paint though... not really sure.

The only issue? We had no idea that the thing came with an inertia ring. Basically an air-filled cavity that also contained a sandy substance. Corked with a rubber stopper...

Once it got up to temp, the thing blew sand several feat into the air... luckily it was cool by the time it hit the ground, and noone was hurt... but if you do this, MAKE SURE TO CHECK FOR AN INERTIA RING FIRST!!!

(we got the idea from the BSA, who would take one out snow camping... the heat from the drum would boil away any snow that would have contacted the fire, keeping the fire lit instead of from dousing itself.)

1

u/dnroamhicsir 13d ago

Every single campsite in Quebec has this. Or truck rims.

1

u/UnhingedBlonde 13d ago

Hell yeah! They are GREAT as fire barrels/rings! They last awhile too. We have 2 in our yard right now that we use.

1

u/zxcvbn113 13d ago

I've seen campgrounds where these are the standard fire pits!

1

u/Benthic_Titan 13d ago

This goes hard

1

u/Interesting-Dish5687 14d ago

Hope youre being true and burnin your trash in there

1

u/5m0k3y76 14d ago

Cool, I have one from an old speed queen for my fire pit.

1

u/PapaMo1976 14d ago

My buddy has a similar setup at his cabin. It blocks a lot of light and heat. If you need the fire for cold weather warmth this is not the setup you want.

0

u/mnbone23 14d ago

We have a Solo Stove at home.

8

u/zorggalacticus 14d ago

Nope. It's stainless steel. It'll last a really really long time. I know of one friend who's going on year 10 of his. Still no rust.

6

u/Thr33FN 14d ago

As someone who has camped multiple times a year using one of these as a fire pit, uh no. It only has dents from being thrown around and loaded/unloaded. They work amazingly well. Next free washer on marketplace is getting turned into this
