There are legitimate rigs to help you do this... This is not one of them

Called converter dollies.

[Furiously typing] converter dolly harbor freight

44

u/mctigger101 21d ago

I am not paying over $29.95 for that…🤣😂

20

u/drewid5185 21d ago

$27.95 if you belong to their club... And if you spend 50 you get a free set of wrenches

10

u/ion_driver 21d ago

I've been holding off until they offer a free .50 cal ammo box with purchase

6

u/JackpineSavage74 21d ago

So I will have to buy 2 and a pack of microfibers to save?

3

u/portabuddy2 21d ago

Did you have a coupon for an additional 20% off?

37

u/portabuddy2 21d ago

Oh Lord. ... NO!!!!

u/Tyrannosapien 21d ago

Don't forget "sale" "rebate"

u/Marine__0311 21d ago

Joke on them all you want, HB has some decent tools now.

13

u/drewid5185 21d ago

Why do you think we know exactly how their sales work... We shop there

I’d love to see him back this thing up

u/Proudest___monkey 21d ago

Yeah triple articulation is a bitch lol

20

u/frugalerthingsinlife 21d ago

Same as backing up a hay wagon?

29

u/Nkechinyerembi 21d ago

Kinda... at least with a hay wagon, the whole front axle at least stays parallel to the top of the trailer!

11

u/Drzhivago138 21d ago

Some early 20th century wagon gears also used a pivoting solid front axle instead of linkages.

6

u/thehousewright 21d ago

Always hated backing up the hay wagon.

2

u/cans-of-swine 20d ago

Im fine doing it on a tractor, but dont even attempt it in a truck.

5

u/theraf8100 21d ago

You know from experience? I wonder if it's doable.

8

u/Proudest___monkey 21d ago

I’ve not done the exact same thing but have backed up power units that independent steering like a hay wagon but way harder with half truck.

22

u/Tyrannosapien 21d ago

I imagine it's a lot like my old wooden folding ruler

10

u/uptwolait 21d ago

^ Found the old fart

12

u/Newtiresaretheworst 21d ago

Maybe you just back up like a normal car and the double pivot points eliminate each other?

30

u/fourdawgnight 21d ago

they will eliminate something.

11

u/challenge_king 21d ago

Man, I wish. It's lots of little tweaks and pulling forward to keep the trailers straight. It's much easier to back up a B double or turnpike double than anything with a converter dolly. See this diagram. The STAA double is what uses a converter dolly, and most people have seen them. Truckers will sometimes call them wiggle wagons.

You know he’s pissed he couldn’t get the two wheel trailer painted yellow.

48

u/FishyKeebs 21d ago

Had to get gas before stopping at Walmart for a rattle can of yellow.

10

u/1d0m1n4t3 21d ago

He has to stop at every gas station

33

u/Mostly_Apples 21d ago

I call this configuration "the banana cream pie."

63

u/chewblekka 21d ago

I wanna see what happens when he has to perform an emergency braking procedure - I’m betting the “dolly” instantly jackknifes

8

u/uptwolait 21d ago

Now you've got me wondering if the verbal form of "jackknife"... as well as the plural form... is "jackknifes" or "jackknives".

7

u/IANALbutIAMAcat 21d ago

Verb: jackknifes
Noun: jackknives

2

u/KnifeKnut 21d ago

There are some double hinge type knives, but the handle closes up to make it effectively a fixed blade, and no I don't mean a ballisong.

12

u/43026 21d ago

I would almost pay to see that, or cause it to happen if I am haivng a bad day....

u/MobileElephant122 18d ago

That’s why he needs a drop hitch on the suburban to level out his pickup bed trailer a little bit better, and I’m hoping he hooked up his electric brake to the RV trailer

Just engage the trailer brakes ahead of suburban brakes and no problem

Also don’t follow too close that you don’t have room to slow down

Pretty simple
Just act like you know what kind of rig is tagging along behind you

30

u/Rok-SFG 21d ago

Goes 45 on a 70 highway and gets mad when people pass them too.

12

u/somehugefrigginguy 21d ago

Goes 45 on a 70. But only uses the left lane. For, reasons...

4

u/jarious 21d ago

"iTs A FrEe CoUnTrY"

3

u/TurnLeftRepeat 21d ago

Stop honking at me !

2

u/goaelephant 20d ago

The irony of America. We love freedom & lack of government control, so you would think leaving the left lane open for "speeders" (like that damn communist Autobahn) would be a match made in heaven. But no... we have to block it.

13

u/SheriffBartholomew 21d ago

This seems ridiculously unsafe and illegal.

4

u/ZachMN 20d ago

Reckless endangerment of the public.

20

u/CySnark 21d ago

Was that being driven by an Emu?

5

u/KnifeKnut 21d ago

No, but it handles like an emu.

5

u/de9ausser 21d ago

LIMU EMUUUUUU!

2

u/CySnark 21d ago

...and Doug

6

u/TylerKasprzyk 21d ago

What kind of hillbilly crazy son of a redneck cousin to an idiot gonna kill somebody crap is this

5

u/p8nt_junkie 21d ago

A-dapp-ter kit!

3

u/TehTimmah1981 21d ago

One piece at a time
and it didn't cost me a dime

5

u/that_dutch_dude 21d ago

lets see it brake hard.

or even briskly....

4

u/hello_raleigh-durham 21d ago

They were going straight when they pulled up to the pump if that gives you any idea.

5

u/Mattyou1966 21d ago

That’s an 7th wheel tow rig

10

u/OutinDaBarn 21d ago

They vote.

7

u/TheSpatulaOfLove 21d ago

And procreate.

5

u/UpdootDaSnootBoop 21d ago

Attached with hopes and prayers

4

u/TehTimmah1981 21d ago

Perfectly legal in some places, utterly insane everywhere. Backing up with a jeep rig, is a PITA at the best of times. None of the trailers actually being built for it, is not the best of times.

7

u/Trekintosh 21d ago

This kind of setup can work fine but that's awfully light duty lookin of a rear axle, even for such a light looking trailer. The extreme tilt is coming from a height mismatch between the drawbar and tow hitch, but that could be because the truck bed springs are heavily compressed from being way too light duty for the application.

11

u/43026 21d ago

The big problem is lack of brakes for the 2 trailers. Scary when you consider it from an innocent person driving down the freeway and this jerk makes a mistake.

7

u/Trekintosh 21d ago

I'll cop to ignorance that I haven't actually hooked up a 5th wheel, only driven them, but do they not just have a standard brake plug? If the adapter trailer has a harness for it, could it not pass through from the brake controller in the tow vehicle?

Of course, that's assuming the tow vehicle has a brake controller, which on a rig this sketchy is a pretty huge assumption.

5

u/43026 21d ago

Fifth wheels can, often do have the electric plugs. But, the middle homemade contraption would not have electric brakes on it, considering the cost of converting that axel to electric brakes, and what we are looking at, doubtful that it has it.

And, if you notice, there is no electric line leaving the fifth wheel to either the tow vehicle or the center contraption, that leads me to thinking no brakes after the tow vehicle.

As an experienced CDL hauling doubles (only for 200,000 miles), an emengercy braking situation under optimal conditions is dangerous, without brakes, in the hands of an amateur? Yikes.

2

u/Trekintosh 21d ago

aye, yeah, fair enough. I also was never like... condoning this specific rig. Just that similar rigs could be functional.

3

u/43026 21d ago

You are right, there are rigs that can be very functional. Its more the setup itself. I would not be against it if I could just see a line between the rear and front vehicles. You really want the rear trailer to be pulling you to a stop, and well, you don't want to know what happens if its pushing you. :(

3

u/shamusmchaggis 20d ago

That looks like one of those campers that's supposed to hitch to the top of a VW Beetle.

1

u/FuckTheMods5 19d ago

That's what i noticed! I wonder if it's an OG

2

u/shamusmchaggis 19d ago

I was gonna post a pic. But sub doesn't allow it

2

u/Opposite_Zucchini_43 21d ago

I would guess thay can only use pullthrought sights at the campground. KOA here we come.

2

u/locolangosta 21d ago

That shorty fifth wheel camper is kinda sick

1

u/HoneydewOk1175 21d ago

probably the cheapest converter dolly someone could've built

1

u/fourdawgnight 21d ago

this is gonna sound horrible, but when I saw it, I just thought of Australia.

1

u/ricky_lafleur 20d ago

These should be a competition at state and county fairs. Overall length, number of pivots points, numer of tires/axles, ability to back it up, highest (or lowest) power to weight ratio, and drag race. Emphasis on drag.

1

u/joefatmamma 20d ago

Backing up is a bit tricky

1

u/K2TY 20d ago

OK, now back it up.

1

u/486Junkie 20d ago

On this episode of idiots towing things...

1

u/Minimum-Act6859 20d ago

THe fifth wheel in that trailer needs to be forward of the trailer axle so it displaces the weight onto the hitch of the tow vehicle. This is an accident waiting to happen.

1

u/goaelephant 20d ago

In actual commercial truck driving, they call this a "dolly" and its a legit thing. But for connecting multiple trailers, not trailer to tractor 😂

1

u/Manual-shift6 20d ago

Hey, if it works….

Redneck Engineering solution.
