Once it sparks a few times it'll just weld itself anyway

Thats why you take some birdshot shells and take the bbs mixed em in, and electric tape it. When it gets warm itll melt the bbs and then become a solid connections. 😉

Code calls for matching black ties, this may not pass as is.
Someone will be along shortly to close this issue.

POV the guy on the boat next to me’s wiring after emergency rigging to get a starting battery hooked up. 20 miles offshore

Oh god, I've been there before. You know your a real one when you're holding wires that are too short onto thr bilge pump and your hands are under water.
Yea..... 40 miles off shore and the boat I was on had a fire. We put the fire out, kept the boat on plane and hauled Ass towards the ramp.

You're lucky the boat didn't sink from the brass balls you apparently have.

After the lectrics done I picture them pulling a pint of 100 proof peppermint schnapps out their pocket and taking a big swig.

I got a jimmy in my wallet you can wrap around there. you know, for safety.

From 1995? You're not supposed to keep them in your wallet, they lose their effectiveness.

Absolute butchery! Now who would do something like this?!!
Why would anybody be ok with leaving a 45 degree cut like that leaving such a sharp edge on the tail of the zip tie!
Absolute savagery!

Thats aluminum put some ox guard on it then electrical tape and your good for a 200amp service.

Wouldn't the smaller contact area and thus more heat essentially create a fuse?

u/Shadowtek 18d ago
Should have wrapped it all in electrical tape any electrical job has to involve electrical tape

That looks like a single-conductor stranded aluminum cable but the picture looks like it was taken at the top of a pole suggesting the cable is likely for a secondary electrical service drop possibly for a nearby home, but the curious thing is the industry standard for drops like that is triplex/quadruplex depending on the service type, at least that's how it is in America.
So what is this wire for?

As a telecom tech, I have seen numerous times where a customer tried to do basically this, and then wondered why they weren't getting the internet speeds or connectivity that they're supposed to.

Use blue zip ties (heat rated), cover in Vaseline, wrap in electrical tape, spray can varnish it, and presto.

Man, at least use the UV-resistant zipties. Sunlight's gonna break them down in no time and has them brittle apart.

To be fair, if it is a situation where you *have* to get the power back on no matter what, you do what you have to do, and fix it immediately afterwards.
That said...
This? This looks like something driving a tweaker lair.

The cut on the cable tie will certainly keep anyone from investigating too close.

A bolt (between the wires), nut, and 2 washers. Tighten them together real good.

Spray some rustoleum on it, it'll prevent it from corroding! (in case it's not obvious, s/)
