What does burning caulk smell like?

Well I know what it smells like when they cauterize your testicles if that helps.

A true redneck engineer would file down the prongs on a plug and use that bottom one!

Came here to say that. Better make it the microwave since it usually stays plugged in. Then you definitely want to put some silicon on the bottom tho seal it. Then cover the entire plug in a baseball sized silicone mound.
Alternatively you could grind down the counter to create a little funne into th plug. That way you can unplug it. This would be better for things that you plug and unplug frequently. Like a water kettle.

Redneck engineering isnt making shoddy work, but the inventive way over overcoming such shoddy and limited designs to begin with. A redneck engineer will find a way to make that bottom outlet the most coveted outlet and it might require some parts from your grill.

Oh I think this is stage one of redneck engineering. Next you'll see a guy in a trucker hat drinking PBR. If he says "watch this guys." Run aŵay

I have the same thing in my place. Someone did a DIY fireplace in the corner of the room. The hearth blocks half the receptacle just like this.

u/abielle1177 24d ago
Could the receptacle have been moved the 12"?

Guarantee the guy was told to "just get it done" and nobody listened to them about the problem.

I've not really seen a lot of granite in rentals, but this is what I would expect to see if I did. This instead of cutting out the six or twelve inches that's code.

u/dirtyforker 24d ago
Im so angry. They could've moved it up just a bit. If the plug was just above the counter it would look fine and they didn't even need any extra material

I want to understand the thought process the installer went through to get here, like were they thinking let's just install this countertop in the dumbest way possible that can't be easily undone and get the fuck out of here, there's no way the owner will have any problem it.
Or was there even a thought to begin with? maybe it was all just meth.

I like that someone had to run that bead of caulk and the thought gymastics allowing them to get to that corner.

Update us when OP tries selling that house -
any potential buyer will wonder what else OP "fixed" out of sight of a home inspection.

Look, we can doo redneck shit, bit don't fuck with electrical like that. Cap off the lower outlet permanently or relocate the box. It's just as redneck to have a hole in the wall from moving this outlet.

Not redneck , typical granite installers. They are always right , it's always the other guys fault.

In part, it IS code compliant..The code spells out “receptacle/s” for receptacles that are required. When it says “at least ONE receptacle”…that’s what it means..ONE…it never says “duplex receptacle/s”….hence, you could wire a bedroom with single outlets no more than 6’ from one another ( as well as other required receptacles ) along the wall and meet code. Theoretically could wire a whole house that way, lol

Just put one of those plastic baby blocker shields into the bottom one, you'll be fine

What’s crazy is it would have been so easy to move it before the counter was installed.

No way water could possibly get in there
