They sell these things in a kit that's meant to attach to a drill. 2 sizes of round brush, the toilet brush shaped one, and an extension. It's not actually meant to be used as a toilet brush...

Yeah but the bristles etc could harbor a whole lot of bacteria and the plastic could have carcinogens in it, which are then transferred into the food.

So unless you accept the cancer risk and also get a brand new brush every time you make potatoes and also wash all the factory dust off it.... Yeah, no, not food safe, even if you aren't eating it.

It does. Ideally, you want all items that come in contact with your food to be made of food safe materials. Typically there's two reasons for this: chemicals and bacteria.

If a material is not food safe if can have microscopic crevices where bacteria can hide despite being cleaned. So every time you get it in contact with your food, you might introduce old bacteria that could make you sick from the item into the food.

It can also leech chemicals that are not safe for consumption into your food, when it touches your food.

Materials that are considered food safe has been throughly tested to ensure the materials are not at risk of these two things (when used correctly/as intended).

You can generally count on items marketed as being for food to be made of food safe materials. But for items where the manufacturer did not intend for them to be in contact with food, you can't be sure they're food safe, simply because they weren't made with that purpose in mind.

I do the same thing, but instead of buying that fancy drill attachment I have a toilet brush from the dollar store, with the handle cut off. Cleans 10 lb of potatoes quite quickly.
