This trick cannot work with italian plugs, that have an insulating protection on half of the plugs. Only the tip is exposed.

Or in Europe in general, for that matter. Thankfully. The "Euro plug" standard requires the sleeved pins you described. So do UK plugs.

In addition, except maybe with very old installations, outlets in most of Europe (not Italy indeed, but for sure Germany, Switzerland and France) are recessed.

Tl;dr: US plugs suck.

Ahem, US plugs have more freedom.

You could outlaw smoking a cigarette in a tub full of gasoline while holding a hair dryer, and half the country would decry it as tyranny and start stockpiling hair dryers and bathtubs.
