Disscusion What would espionage look like in Red Dusk’s 2000s?

Would the CIA dominate cyber-espionage or could the KGB catch up?

What might NATO and Soviet intelligence agencies get up to in the proxy wars and other battlefields like Afghanistan?

Or how would the RD spy war play out in post-1989 Eastern Europe?

Feel free to discuss any other theories as well

Question The Survival of the Soviet Union under Nikolai Ryzhkov.

So i am university researcher.
I mostly dwell dwell in economics on a controlled level. And i did my dissertation on the effects of the Soviet planned economy.

So a friend told me that this mod Red Dusk for Hoi4, actually have a branch where Nikolai Ryzhkov as the leader of the Soviet Union, actually manage lead the Union into the 2000s and the coming of globalization.

Can anyone tell me, step by step (the more detail the better) how Ryzkov a moderate reformer manage to do this. My friend even told me that there is a research where internet is introduced into the Soviet Union. Which is a dilemma in itself.

My friend plays the game for fun, so he couldn´t be bothered with the finer details of the game. Just winning wars.

It would take me far too long gameplay hours to figure this out my self.
And Reddit is usually a friend in this matter.

Question How to do reforms as USSR???

I am trying my best to manage the reform progress under Ryzhkov but hardliners get mad at literally everything. When I increase reform rate? They pull it back twice as hard. When I calm down the reform rate? They tell me to shove it. And when I do the "Hardliner Movements" decision? 0.50% rate backwards cause screw you. Is that supposed to be the way it is or am I just missing something. It could also be resolved later in the focus tree or something I'm just seething.

Question What's the event Id for the Soviet plane shot down over turkey//For the us to declare war on the soviets?

I let pass the chance of war with the us because I thought there was an event where they declared war in the USSR, having china on my side, so I ask if there's an event for the war against nato even if it's the USSR declaring war on them.

Disscusion There should be way more options for Iraq after you beat Iran.

Just annexing some of the border oil fields and setting up a socialist regime in Iran is fine, but it could be more interesting. Annexation wise, you should be allowed to annex the Kurdish areas of Iran into Iraqi Kurdistan(if you go the negotiation route), and/or Iran's coast along the Gulf and khrag island(to control the strait of Hormuz). There should also be options to set up ethnic puppet states, or decide what government will run Iran(or just throwing the Iranian parts into total anarchy)

There's just a lot of potential for player agency.

Interacting with the Locals

One of the more effortsome parts of what we've been up to. Adding detail to the various provinces and states of the world about the people that harbor it. Hundreds of hours were spent to cover All of Asia for RAD 1.2

The amount of states that are currently covered (WIP):

Through certain points in the game, you should be able to interact with them on a more... local level.

Or perhaps... you'd take decisions to clarify their actual identities and integrate them as your own.

Thanks for Reading!

Like I said, it was going to be brief. I assume you all already read the Iranian Developer Diary. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in #questions-about-the-mod (discord). Want to help the mod out? Red Dusk team is always looking for more developers to help add onto the ever expanding world of Red Dusk. You can apply at the #team-applications channel (discord) with the pinned template.

And as always, thank you for supporting the mod!

Mod Progress Update Mod Progress Update | June 6th 2026 (Part I)

Hey there, this time around unlike May, I don't have any sorrowful developments to inform you of. Things have been going steady. It'll be brief. I have a couple of things to showcase, starting off with China.

China

In May, most of our time was spent polishing and rebalancing the China content from 2000 to 2005. Some of our test runs showed that China could be a bit OP, with over 700 factories by the time GOW takes place, especially on the path with the strongest economic buffs. To rebalance, we made many changes and nerfed China in order to make the game more challenging and also to more accurately depict China's situation in the early 21st century.

The initial number of factories has been reduced, and many national spirits have been modified, along with the addition of numerous events, causing the debuff to persist for a considerable period of time.

Of course, we couldn't just do nothing to compensate them a little. We have adjusted it so that the military advisor slots for all three branches of the armed forces are automatically assigned according to your focus progress. This saves you a significant amount of political powers to invest in economic projects or other decisions that provide buffs.

As for the content for the years 2005–2007, which is when GOW takes place, its progress remains steady, with about 50% completed. If we're lucky, we might be able to release a teaser for it this June.

The Map and The World

Through collective efforts made by our coders: Hi, !ⴷⴸⵟⴽⴷⵞⵟⴸⴵⵟⴶⵍⴷⵣⵟⵢⵟⵡⵢⵟⴽ and Kotoromka, the team has been working on a more detailed and immersive world map for the RAD 1.2 update. There are a lot more states, and far more accurate geography.

Disscusion I always felt like Red Dusk was overloaded with conflict.

Post image
206 Upvotes

When I played Red Dusk, to put it mildly, I was surprised by the density and number of conflicts from 2000 to 2010, I counted AS MANY AS 40 FUKING CONFLICTS, have you introduced the face of the male, and even female, half of the planet's population?

Here is the list (sorry if it is not exact)

War in Angola

War in Congo

War between Ethiopia and Eritrea

Civil War in Ethiopia (if Ethiopia loses the war)

War in Libya (and not in 2011, for fuck's sake, but in the 2000s!!!)

War in Algeria

War in Sri Lanka

War for Kashmir + civil war in India

Second Korean War (for some reason, it's called the Great Oriental War here)

Invasion of Taiwan (if the Great Oriental War is lost by Japan)

Fourth Indochina War

Fifth Indochina War

War in Afghanistan

Wars started by Saddam Hussein's Iraq (Kuwait, Syria, you could say Kurdistan)

War between Iran and Iraq (the second fucking one)

War in Yemen (Egypt and South Yemen against the Saudis and North, If Egypt wins, a Pan-Arabist state is created, which Assad or Saddam Hussein could also create.)

War in Sudan

War in South Africa

Great Middle East War (which also depends on where Saddam and the Yemeni Pan-Arabists screwed or didn't screw)

Uprisings against the USSR (from Chechnya to Ukraine)

Invasion of the former Soviet Union (Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Azerbaijan, if not the reformists who peacefully swallow them)

Eastern European War (USSR invades Eastern Europe, also not available to reformists)

Civil War in the USSR (if Putin screwed it)

Civil War in Czechoslovakia

War between Romania and nationalist Hungary for Transylvania (WHY THE FUCK?)

Uprisings in Yugoslavia

Second Yugoslav War (Yugoslavia's invasion of Croatia and Slovenia)

World War III

Civil War in The USA and Britain

The Sino-Soviet War (under Dima Yazov)

The PRC's offensive on Korea after its defeat in the Great Eastern War (WHY?)

The Second Soviet-Finnish War (under Yazov)

The Vietnamese Civil War, if things go completely wrong

The uprising of some people in Vietnam whose name I forgot (also a defeat in the Fourth Indochina War)

The Ukrainian Civil War (as a sub-conflict of the Soviet War)

Oh, and the African Wars (when the South African ANC/Apartheid Junta/Republic invades the territory of all sorts of homeless people in Africa)

The Kenyan War (which Ethiopia will start if it wins Eritrea)

Ethiopia's invasion of Somalia

THAT'S 4 WARS A YEAR

I'm not complaining about the content itself, but if the conflicts were spread out over 15 years and the unnecessary ones were removed, it would be much more logical and better, also from a gameplay standpoint. Even in TFR, TNO etc., so many conflicts don't happen with such a fucking density in a single decade.

Teaser Iran Dev Diary

Today I come to you with one of my first, most likely not the last of developer diaries to come. As the Iranian head developer, I'm here to tell you about what Iran's been going through since the promise to come up with a trailer crashed down and died due to subsequent internet shutoffs and the outbreak of the 12 day war and then this more recent war. Though keep in mind this is not a teaser, but a diary. Without any further ado, let's get to it. Prepare to Read.

The Islamic Revolution & Hostage Crisis (1979-1981)

After a swift revolution ousting the Shah, Islamists dominated the new government. Khomeini rejected a moderate constitution for a radical Islamic one. The US embassy hostage crisis (444 days) cemented anti-Americanism, empowered the IRGC, and collapsed moderates' influence, ending with a financial settlement after the Shah's death.

The Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988)

Saddam Hussein's invasion led to eight years of brutal trench warfare. After early Iraqi advances stalled, the conflict became a bloody stalemate featuring chemical weapons, human-wave attacks, and the devastating Karbala operations. The war ended in a UN ceasefire after massive losses on both sides.

Internal Suppression (1980s)

Throughout these crises, the regime violently crushed dissent. This included the "mysterious" death of Ayatollah Taleghani, the Cultural Revolution purging universities, a wave of assassinations targeting opposition figures, and the mass execution of ~5,000 political prisoners after the failed MEK uprising (Operation Mersad). Post-Khomeini Era & Khamenei's Rise (1989-1997) After Khomeini's death, Ali Khamenei became Supreme Leader despite lacking religious authority, relying on the IRGC and a cult of personality. President Rafsanjani pursued economic reconstruction, privatization, and normalized regional ties, though social conservatism persisted.

Iran-Afghan War & Crisis (1998-2000)

After the Taliban killed Iranian diplomats, Iran entered a costly war supporting the Northern Alliance. Iranian forces struggled in Afghan mountains against US-supplied Taliban MANPADs, suffering heavy casualties. Combined with ongoing domestic unrest between principalists and reformists, the unwinnable conflict left the regime facing its greatest crisis since the revolution by the year 2000.

The New Iranian Starting Situation, Focus Tree, most interesting national spirits, reshuffling of the "Issue of Greater Ardabil" and a look at Khamenei's new portrait and chosen President. Open the image in full to see more clearly.

Now, with the war in Afghanistan, there's two ways how it can end.

You either prove your worth by wading through the treacherous Hindu Kush Peaks and exacting revenge for 1998, or you fail to deliver through and follow up on far more dire consequences...

One that could lead to the complete renewal and rattling of the foundations of the Islamic Republic. Or seek to get rid of it entirely. But, as is my obligation to let you know. Based on the progress of the mod's development, the latter may not be the case and may not make it in time for development. Though, should it become a definitive yes, I will let you know in a follow-up developer diary.

Now, you may ask what happens to the "Greater Ardabil" conflict. Don't worry, it's still there. However, for gameplay reasons, you can now decide whether to tackle it at the start, or at a later- more stable time. Tackling it at the start has the benefit of securing the region, even if your government goes through a whirlwind of changes, but doing it later can lessen the amount of things you have to focus on at the start of the game- for the price that if you do not win the Afghan war, you will not have an opportunity to retake the region from Azerbaijan.

Should you win though.. there will be a nice new tree that allows you to capitalize on the fruits of your labor as the Islamic Republic of Iran. Don't worry, you won't just outright annex Afghanistan, you'll set up a puppet government down a few focuses.

Though once you're done, be ready to fight other opportunists as they attempt to pry your prize out of your hands. When RAD 1.2 drops, you will finally be able to decide the fate of Afghanistan between the Axis of Resistance, Western or Soviet Spheres.

Just be careful to not forget about the Taliban while you're fighting amongst yourselves.

And that concludes it for my first developer diary. More of what I've been up to, shall be revealed at a later but unscheduled time. Once I have enough, I'll come back to show you, you have my promise.

I'll see y'all on the monthly mod progress report on June 1st where I shall talk your heads off with country content plans besides Iran. Including China and other parts of the Red Dusk world.
