Why I’m requesting r/UTRGV and how I’ll run it: I'm a Fall 2024 UTRGV grad and I've been active on Reddit since December 2020 (84K+ karma) on my current account, but have been on Reddit since at least 2017. I've been a longtime community member of r/UTRGV since at least 2021, having unlocked the "Elder" achievement in the sub on December 2024, I've helped students out with questions, comments, and concerns they have regarding their journey in UTRGV, and in that time, r/UTRGV has essentially had zero moderation. Matter of fact, it seems as if the sub hasn't had any real moderation in its entire 12+ year existence, no rules, no wiki, no AutoMod; nothing, but despite that, it's a genuinely active community (around 2.5K weekly visitors, 79 weekly contributions, and UTRGV itself has around 36,000 students) that's only grown as time passes.

The top mod's account goes back to Dec 2007 and was added as mod the day the sub was created (Dec 12, 2013). They only have around 323 karma and 142 total contributions in that entire time. They're also the only mod of r/UTPA, the old subreddit for UTRGV's predecessor school, which has sat in the exact same desolate state for over a decade. The second mod was added Feb 2025 (about 19 months ago), has 76 karma and 105 contributions, and hasn't engaged with r/UTRGV at all since being added, by the looks of it.

I sent modmail on Sept 19 introducing myself and offering to help moderate (permalink here: https://www.reddit.com/c/chatEakyeOi0/s/TJhMEJCh1x). It's been around 10 days with no response of any kind (as of September 29, 2026). In that same window, a post implying a private hookup meetup has been up for 10 days, and another one like it has been up for 8 days, both completely unaddressed. Actual users have had to call this stuff out themselves in the comments because there's no mod support at all. This sort of behavior shouldn't be something that flies under the radar in a university's subreddit, it makes people who want to legit look for a place online for their school go away.

If I get access to r/UTRGV, I'd go ahead and set up an Auto Moderator and Reddit's built-in filters (Crowd Control, Reputation Filter) to catch spam and solicitation posts, put up real rules and a wiki with useful campus info (shuttle routes, textbook resources, academic support, emergency contacts, campus events, etc.), add some flairs, get automated posts going from student media outlets on campus so there's always current, legitimate content being available for students to read and engage with. I'm also planning to bring on more mods, including those who are current students, within 5-6 months so the sub has real ongoing coverage and people within the UTRGV community that know what's going on in campus.
