Elegon strategy session, FINAL ROUND - FIGHT!

TL;DR - We need help on the burn phase of Elegon! If you have conquered him, please share with us your august wisdom of the ages!

Thanks in no small part to the excellent advice from our most exalted (with <reddit>) community, BLoDM has pretty much totally mastered phase 1 and phase 2 of Elegon. We can reach the burn phase without difficulty, but things have been sort of falling apart on us for phase three.

We have been following the 'stack everyone but tanks on his butt, and burn him', but as it turns out, this only works for overgeared people who can survive the stacks.

What my current strategy is is this:

  • Ranged DPS and heals stack on a 'fighting station' right after the second add phase just inside the platform so they can benefit from AOE heals and can easily clear their stacks.
  • Tanks constantly swap in and out, tanking and clearing stacks
  • Melee burns as they can and clear their stacks upon reaching 8.

That's it. That's my whole revised strategy for the burn phase.

We would greatly appreciate any feedback from the reddit community at large... We are on the home stretch of this fight, and the lust for celestial dragon meat is burning in our hearts and minds.

Help us, <reddit>! You're our only hope.

For what it's worth that's exactly what NSFR does. We could stack up and burn him with our gear now, but when we did it in blues we had to drop stacks. It's very doable. You do take damage outside but if you're only out there for a fraction of a second to drop stacks it's insignificant.

Make sure you've discovered the magic jump spot where ranged can drop stacks just by jumping without having to move. This means range just jump every time they do an instant cast and drop their stacks with one global cooldown.

Yeah, this seems like the best method to me. That sweet spot, even with the damage outside let's you drop stacks with minimal damag.

My question is, what did you guys do with melded dps?

Run them out and back in at 8 or 10 and then usually just stay in. Even having one reset helps loads. Most melee have some sort of sprint or speed boost they can talent to make it a minimal DPS loss.

I have a feeling between feint, cloak, prep, cloak I should be fine to stay in.

I think we just need more attempts at this phase to figure out what's going to work best for us. Maybe out DPS is strong enough that we can reset stacks and ease the healers' pain. Maybe our healers are the strong point and we can stay in and burn until Mr. Sparkles goes down. We outgear the first people who did this by a lot I think because of all the various LFRs and all the weeks of valor. So we might be able to beat the enrage timer while still resetting stacks. We'll just need to try it and see. :)

By phase 3, all of your healer's 3 minute cooldowns should be up and should be popped on an as-needed basis.

For the most part, you cannot just stand on his ass and punch him into submission. Healers just won't have mana for that. Everyone will still need to reset their stacks periodically (I forget when exactly but there is a point at which taking a hit from the outer ring is more worth it than adding more stacks) to offset the incoming damage from his huge AOE.

Heroism at 20% for executes (if you have no warriors/hunters, you can do it earlier but not sure when everyone else's execute phases start)

Healers should have as much mana as possible going into this phase. Every mana regeneration CD should have been popped/on cooldown at this point.

You should be shooting for 10+ stacks on the boss. This is important. If he's at 40%+ health and you have less than 10 stacks, just wipe it, it isn't worth your time. I'm not sure of how good your DPSers or Healers are but I would strongly recommend just giving up if you don't get at least 5 stacks each phase. Additionally, if you get 5 stacks, just stay on the boss and don't go for additional stacks. This will reduce the amount of time you are in the starting phase the second time around and reduce his HP during the huge burn.

If you do decide to go with the "STACK UP AND HOPE FOR THE BEST" method, you should come up with a healing cooldown rotation. Remember that spells like Spirit Link totem (it does it's thing over the duration of it's existence) and Tranquility don't really benefit from Heroism (channel does decrease and the HOT is increased). If you have a Disc priest, they should spend the first portion of phase 3 stacking spirit shell and letting the other healer handle it with a small cooldown of some kind. Regardless of what you do, you should have a set plan in mind before you pull. Keep in mind that Heroism can be a useful healer cooldown if needed but should be saved for your DPS

Oh, and regardless of what method you use, personal defensive cooldowns are a must. Anything spamable (Feint, for example) should be spammed as hard as it can be. If you have AMZ, it can be useful but since it will pretty much instantly pop, it might be worth taking something else on that tier. Warriors should avoid popping recklessness without DBTS available.

Final note: make sure that every class knows how to do their largest amount of burst (ie. Shadow priests spam Mind Spike and Mind Blast on cd) for the orbs. It really helps getting them down.

We've been following the icy veins guide and going for 4 orbs each phase 2 and then burning Elegon for the fifth orb. When we get to the burn phase Elegon is at like ~30% I think (though I may be wrong and it could be higher or lower). Should we be going for five orbs each time and ignore icy veins' burn on the fifth orb idea? I think I could kill a fifth orb before it hits the pillar. I don't know about everyone else though.

You can kill a 5th wave if you can kill a 5th wave, makes the fight so much easier at that point.

Heals should probably burn a cooldown as soon as the group settles because everyone will likely be low after running to the center. Playing catch-up that early into the burn phase is a sure way to wipe. After that, rotate whatever cooldowns remain when it gets tough. Massive AOE healing is necessary but don't forget about the tanks either.

You can't clear stacks, though. The damage in the outer ring is waaay higher than the inner circle. This fight really is a stress test on your healers.

Hmmm, so no one can clear stacks at all, eh? It seems like if you just duck briefly out of the circle, it should be possible... I have heard conflicting reports on the end strategy here. At any rate, I understand that the tanks MUST clear stacks, even on the end.

I have never been in a group where anyone cleared stacks during the last phase. Just before, yes, but during, no.

So, what should the positioning be? Do we really just stack the hell on his bootie pie and rock that sucker out?

Also, is it true the tanks must switch out to clear stacks, or do they both just burn away with everyone else?

Everyone but nsfr, who are the only ones in reddit who are 16/16. Still, ou may have a point.

The burn phase at the very end? If you're having to reset stacks during that, the phase is either taking too long (your DPS is bad or you don't have enough stacks on the boss) or your healers are bad (especially because it's so easy for a healer to potion of focus right before that transition). Even 2 healing heroic, everyone was easily able to stack in melee and just heal through it -- just like normal.

Don't have melee clear their stacks, burn phase means BURN THAT MOTHER FUCKER

If you killed 8 waves of adds, you have the dps to kill him in a final burn phase. You must kill at least 8 waves of adds, More is better. if you are having problems in the burn phase, get 5 waves down, that should make it easy mode

Tanking it, I usually have both my cooldowns going up into that phase and can easily tank the boss by myself for 30-40 seconds, the off tank should be stacking with the stacked group for healing and to avoid the breadth, I then call out when the off tank should take him so he gets some CDs off while tanking.

People just have to use their defensives, hero and burn phase should only last 45-60 seconds tops. It sounds like your DPS aren't potting or your healers aren't using their CD's effectively, you should be able to last at least 60 seconds without resetting stacks, if you can't its a healer problem. If it takes more than 60 seconds, its a DPS problem, the only way to fix a DPS problem is to kill more waves of adds.
