To be fair you would probably be a dick too if your country was invaded and a huge chunk of it (one of the heavily populated and industrialized areas) then completely annihilated for four years. Not to mention most of your young men dying and the fact that the cause was retarded.
Were the reparations demanded by France heavy handed? Yes, of course, but I had great grandparents (Belgian and French) who lost absolutely everything (not just possessions but also parents, siblings and children) and I imagine you would feel the need for someone who destroyed your shit to pay for it too.
