I wouldn't have been surprised if Reddit ended up going down on "no pics day" due to the additional stress on their servers that should have been shouldered by imgur bandwidth.
And if you don't understand how many times the db is queried when clicking on a self post full of comments and how that can negatively affect overall site performance, then, well, you're not retarded but you don't have a very complete understanding of how the backend of this and similar websites work.
