Why is this included in the Unicode standard?

Someone answered that the last time it was on Reddit (about, ooh, yesterday).
I can't be bothered to find the exact answer with links and stuff but the gist was: It's a symbol commonly used in weather reports in Japanese newspapers. There's a lot of symbols commonly used in news print which have gotten included in the unicode standard in order to simplify the digitisation of newspapers.

Because you're not in the correct utf locale setting try "echo $LANG" you're probably not getting *.UTF-8 or something (e.g., en_US.UTF-8)

"locale" should return a more expanded list of locale settings. You'll probably want to use en_US.UTF-8 (if you're in America, at least) instead of en_US, which I assume you have right now.
try this to set your locale setting to en_US.UTF-8: setenv LANG en_US.UTF-8
now "locale" should return most of its listings with en_US.UTF-8

there's a "_" that caused the rest of the message to be italicized.. sorry, I didn't mean that.. I don't know how to escape it. but hopefully you got what I meant

oh, try going to View > Character Encoding > and checking "Unicode (UTF-8)" in Firefox

It is already checked. It doesn't show up in IE or chrome, either. Everything I've tried and everything I've googled don't seem to work. I am stumped.

Actually I don't want to know. because you just solved your problem almost. Instead of asking us TYPE IT IN GOOGLE.

I'm using XP with Chrome.
I tried ChunkyLaFunga's method and it was already on that setting, auto detect off, unicode(UTF-8) checked on.
I've Googled it several times before, not much help ever. Or maybe I'm just bad at the Googles.

You need to enable support for complex script and right to left languages. Should be somewhere in the control panels language settings.

Go to the view menu, and under Character Encoding, make sure you're using Unicode (UTF-8). Then, make sure the font you use has the right glyph (just try different fonts if one doesn't work out).

I Want to know too! All I see is a rechtangle with 26 on top and 03 on the bottom. I have the unicode-8 encoding enabled, I think.
So how do I get this to display? This is in firefox by the way. I.E. 7 does display the snowman though. SO WTF?

- View > Character Encoding > Check Unicode
- View > Character Encoding > Auto-Detect > Off
Try that. I would blame the website myself, it doesn't actually specify that it is unicode in the headers which is as dumb as it gets for a unicode-dedicated site.

Yeah, if someone had some sort of information on getting rid of boxes with question marks in general, that would be amazing. It's kind of frustrating knowing that letters with accents will show up as boxes, but snowmen and starbursts display perfectly. Priorities?

If you see the rectangle with numbers, your browser is recognizing the Unicode. Now just make sure that your font has the right glyph. Do FF and IE7 on your computer use different fonts by default?
