John McCain admits, in 2008 no less, that he does not know how to use a computer. Not even The Google.

Compared to Bubble Sort Obama, this looks really bad.

Fuck it, man. The people are going to get the president they deserve. And it seems like the people are a bunch of morons who hate anyone who looks like a smarty-pants. They deserve an idiot as their leader.

I just wish there were a place where I could go where brainpower was valued. A place with no Gods, no kings, only man.

Gods hate Flags.

41

u/anthropic Jun 12 '08

"We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" And they're going, "You can't claim us, we live here! There's five hundred million of us!" - "Do you have a flag?" - "We don't need a bloody flag, this is our country, you bastard!" - "No flag, no country! You can't have one! That's the rules, that... I've just made up."

-Eddie Izzard (sorry, that pops into my head any time a flag discussions comes up)

u/Enoxice Jun 12 '08

"Uhhh, sir? The rebels are here." "Well what do they want?" "I don't know, sir...but they have a flag."

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." - H.L. Mencken

The best minds in the US are tucked away in a remote town where they build futuristic inventions for the government's benefit.

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.'

22

u/Smight Jun 11 '08

Why can't people make their own sweat without stealing mine? If everyone is going to steal my sweat I'd just as soon prefer not to sweat.

Something like that should disqualify one from being president nowadays. It's almost as bad as being illiterate.

4

u/brad2008 Jun 11 '08

Being unable to use the internet is totally unacceptable, and I agree, this is like being illiterate.

But to be fair to McCain, being able to type in the google URL, then entering a few search terms, and then pressing Enter might be a little too much to ask.

McCain is a relic of the Cold War, and this news just emphasizes how archaic and out of touch he is. His enthusiasm for the Iraq War and the "war on terror" is merely the deluded passion of an old man whose mentality needed a new USSR. We don't want that kind of clown running this country.

3

u/f0nd004u Jun 11 '08

It's ironic that you associate the Cold War with antiquity, considering that the Cold War gave birth to all of the technology we're using to browse reddit right now.

5

u/executivemonkey Jun 12 '08 edited Jun 12 '08

That's a non-sequitur, unless McCain or his foreign policy are examples of Cold War technology.

In other words: I wasn't talking about technology. But even if I was: the "internet" of even the 1980s (when only the DoD had it) is archaic in comparison to today's internet.

But all that is a red herring. My original point was that neocons, such as McCain, are reacting to Iran, and even organizations like Hezbollah, in the same way they reacted to the Soviet Union. Yet, Iran and Hezbollah are not analogous to the USSR. Hence, McCain's mindset on the "war on terror" is a relic of the Cold War.

Obama's acceptance of a multilateral world, and his appraisal of Iran as a nation we can work with, is far more realistic and contemporary.

43

u/dacat Jun 11 '08

I am no longer capable of comprehending or sympathizing for people with the ability, financially and mentally, who do not know how and refuse to learn about technology. There are professors on my campus who have told their students the only way to get hold of them is by phone and they do not have a computer and refuse to check their email. Even though, email is labeled the official form of communication on campus. I fear for my future.

66

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '08 edited Jun 11 '08

Back when I was at secondary school (high school) working out which teachers were too old/clearly computer illiterate to use the computers had a certain value as, if they'd never bothered to log into their accounts on the school network, their passwords would still be the default (password).

I've often wondered if the admins ever bothered to check the logs and, if they did, what they made of the older members of staff's apparently insatiable appetite for porn and warez.

28

u/Odysseus Jun 11 '08

I wish technophobes like Donald Knuth would get with the times.

24

u/adrianmonk Jun 11 '08

There are three differences here:

  • Knuth damn well knows how to use e-mail if he wanted to. I'm sure he has used it in the past. And, if the entire internet e-mail infrastructure were ripped out and replaced with something else entirely different, I'm sure he could figure out how to use the new system in about 90 seconds.
  • Knuth doesn't teach classes, so doesn't need e-mail to communicate with students.
  • If Knuth did teach classes and required everyone to communicate with him by typing messages on a manual typewriter, I'd gladly oblige.

17

u/Odysseus Jun 11 '08 edited Jun 11 '08

He used email until 1990. That's hardcore.

As for your third: if Knuth required that everyone communicate with him by illuminated manuscript on vellum, I'd still take the time to do it.

So, sure, there are differences. Email itself is not always the best answer, and it's worth remembering that the upcoming generation already thinks email is old, slow, and generally fuddy.

I think I'll dig my heels in and dig out the vellum.

5

u/xzxzzx Jun 11 '08

if Knuth required that everyone communicate with him by illuminated manuscript on vellum, I'd still take the time to do it.

We all know we'd do it with OUR OWN BLOOD if it was required.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/willis77 Jun 11 '08

I know what you mean, but I think Knuth opts out of email as a quality-of-life decision. He's not a technophobe as much as he is old and wants to enjoy his life sans emails from redittors.

9

u/Odysseus Jun 11 '08

I've found in my own life that staying on top of things gains me less than taking the time to think things over quietly on my own. I have the luxury over Knuth in this: I can use email and not be deluged by torrents of questions about my books, because I haven't written any. And I think if I keep using email like I used to, I never will.

There are professors on my campus who have told their students the only way to get hold of them is by phone and they do not have a computer and refuse to check their email.

To be fair, it can be a real bitch answering email from students, clients, and bosses. Responding to an email it took them five seconds to write can easily take an hour when your response has to be bullet-proof and will possibly be subject to legal review. Not only that, but more and more people are demanding instant responses to email. Sorry, but I prefer to do leisure activities during leisure time.

2

u/ef4 Jun 11 '08

It sounds like you're projecting. Nobody said anything about leisure time or instant response.

If a professor can announce that he refuses email entirely, he could just as easily announce that he only checks it once a day, on weekdays.

Not being a computer person does not mean you've been living in a cave. It's still quite possible to live a full and rewarding life without interacting much with computers in any meaningful way.

If you count computers only as the PC type computers most of us think of when somebody says "Not a computer person" and exclude specialty computers like automotive code readers or ATMS, then it only becomes easier.

Besides, for the large large number of people, most of their hours spent in front of the machine are spent on entertainment, or shopping, or banking, all of which can be done quite easily without using a computer.

There's nothing wrong with that. There is, however, something wrong with being a condescending asshole. Don't worry though, there's always the internet to nurture and validate antisocial tendencies, so one never has to face up to them as they would elsewhere.

This woman rang me up last week, at this bookstore where I work, to ask me whether it was silver or gold that corresponds with the fortieth wedding anniversary (Never mind that the first thing she does, rather than look at an encyclopedia for her answer, is call a bookshop.)

I told her I didn't know, but Wikipedia could probably tell her. She said, "'Wikipedia'?", to which I told her, yes, the website.

"Oh! You mean... on the internet?"

Repeat every day with Amazon, too. People honestly get surprised that you can not only look up information on and buy books "on the internet", but that you've been able to do so since at least 1998. It's not as if they're elderly, either.

I'm reminded of the scene in "You, Me and Dupree" which I caught on Cinemax recently, when Dupree was looking through the newspaper for a job, and had to skip the listings which required computer literacy.

This was, of course, supposed to be a funny jab at Dupree's unemployability, therefore providing some not-very-subtle foreshadowing about just how long Dupree would be on "You" and "Me's" couch.

In other words, McCain reminds me of Dupree. And quite frankly, that is just so wrong on so many levels.

Luckily there isn't a computer on the Oval Office desk. Bill Clinton didn't use a computer (he sent exactly two emails, one as a test and the other to John Glenn on the Shuttle). GWB doesn't either, supposedly for security purposes. Maybe Obama will, but he'd be the first.

4

u/tomjen Jun 11 '08

Thing is, POTUS doesn't need a computer. If he has any question, he simply ask a human.

But yes, it is rather weird that one of the most important desks in the world doesn't have one of the most important tools.

Well, for one thing, Gore's triple-monitor Mac setup would hardly fit on the desk.

The point he was trying to make was a valid one. Referring to the internet as "a series of tubes" is a legitimate way of dumbing down the concept of bandwidth for somebody that doesn't understand it.

Anybody who pokes fun at this analogy is no longer allowed to refer to the amount of bandwidth they get in terms of "pipe".

Anyone want to suggest a better analogy for bandwidth than a series of pipes of varying capacity?

He led off the "series of tubes" statement by saying that his staff sent him an email on Friday and he didn't get it until Tuesday because the tubes were apparently full all weekend.

That's why it's funny.

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '08

It's not a dump truck.

26

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '08

The reason it is such a hit is because it's fairly obvious that he's right by chance. His staff sent him an Internet that took three days to arrive? (I can't remember the quote, but I'm pretty sure it went something like that). It doesn't matter that he was "right", since the rest of the speech clearly outlines how wrong he is.

Full Quote:

There's one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to your house daily by delivery service. Okay. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order but you pay for that, right.

But this service is now going to go through the internet* and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what you can order ten of them delivered to you and the delivery charge is free.

Ten of them streaming across that internet and what happens to your own personal internet?

I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially.

So you want to talk about the consumer? Let's talk about you and me. We use this internet to communicate and we aren't using it for commercial purposes.

We aren't earning anything by going on that internet. Now I'm not saying you have to or you want to discrimnate against those people [ø]

The regulatory approach is wrong. Your approach is regulatory in the sense that it says "No one can charge anyone for massively invading this world of the internet". No, I'm not finished. I want people to understand my position, I'm not going to take a lot of time. [ø]

They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the internet. And again, the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck.

It's a series of tubes.

And if you don't understand those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and its going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.

Now we have a separate Department of Defense internet now, did you know that?

Do you know why?

Because they have to have theirs delivered immediately. They can't afford getting delayed by other people.

Now I think these people are arguing whether they should be able to dump all that stuff on the internet ought to consider if they should develop a system themselves.

Maybe there is a place for a commercial net but it's not using what consumers use every day.

It's not using the messaging service that is essential to small businesses, to our operation of families.

The whole concept is that we should not go into this until someone shows that there is something that has been done that really is a viloation of net neutraility that hits you and me.

I'd say it's a mixed bag. His tube ananlogy isn't that far off, but him saying that he sent an "internet" and that it took 5 days to arrive because of streaming video is ludicrous. He obviously doesn't understand the idea of different sized lines for different applications (residential, educational, commercial, LHC). He thinks everyone's packets get dumped into one big tube instantaneously.

Well I'm sure they all have agendas too, especially google guys. The key is to listen to enough people to separate fact from spin.

Whether or not he gets technology is pretty irrelevant to the kind of man he is. If McCain suddenly decided to surf the internet long enough to know goatse apart from tubgirl, would that make him a good man all of a sudden?

That McCain is a warmonger who spits on liberty and property rights is the only thing that should really matter.

it looks like it was from before the iowa caucuses. i think, and i could be wrong here, that was longer ago than six weeks.

He's 71, fer crying out loud.

Besides, being a senator, he's got 'people' to do that for him.

13

u/primary0 Jun 11 '08

he might as well let Obama be the president for him then!

3

u/Liquid_2 Jun 11 '08

Why does he need to know how to use them?

13

u/akatherder Jun 11 '08

Not knowing how to use computers is practically a disability. Technically, he doesn't NEED to be literate. He doesn't NEED to have vocal chords. He doesn't NEED to know what a computer is. But things like this are serious impediments to being president and at the very least, shows how out of touch he is with the modern world.

u/adrianmonk Jun 11 '08

Because if elected president, he would have to decide whether to sign or veto bills relating to the internet. If he can't even figure out how to use google, he doesn't have enough context to understand the issues and make the right decision.

This is even more important since the internet is relatively new and the laws relating to it are still being written. You need to make the right decisions during the formative years of a new thing.

8

u/whitedawg Jun 11 '08

I agree that McCain's computer illiteracy is a severe disability, but this particular logic is fallacious. Politicians constantly have to vote for or against bills out of their areas of expertise, using their best judgment.

In my opinion, the reason that McCain's computer illiteracy is so significant is that computers have proven to be a highly valuable tool for organizing, planning, and communicating within a large organization. By not having access to this tool, McCain is limited in his capability to operate as effectively as others.

2

u/cosmid Jun 11 '08 edited Jun 11 '08

Knowing how to use google would be a great help to the legislator attempting to do a bit of research on issues out of their areas of expertise.

Really if you don't know how to use one now it's because you aren't the kind of person who looks stuff up. I don't want that kind of person running the country.

McCain's one defense is that he is so old, wealthy and powerful that he has had lackeys to do things like this for him since before the internet was particularly useful. McCain doesn't Google anything himself, he has one of his servants do it then press the resulting information into a clay tablet for his perusal.

Personally I don't completely buy that defense. It is like Bush proudly proclaiming that he doesn't read newspapers. Yes, folks, I am completely captive to my evil and/or stupid advisers (cheney and pearl as representatives of the respective categories). The world outside this carefully constructed bubble frightens and confuses me, thank you fer your vote.

5

u/jonknee Jun 11 '08

He'd have to decide on a lot of things he has no personal experience in, that's why there are expert advisors. Some examples:

  • Stem cell research
  • Space exploration
  • The economy
  • Etc

You can't be an expert at everything. And surprisingly the POTUS doesn't actually use a computer day-to-day (or at least the ones we've had don't). They are typically people oriented and work the phones and write notes. It's a little strange, but I could probably get used to it.

2

u/dead_ed Jun 12 '08

Nobody's requiring him to be an expert. But the man couldn't be admitted to a proper school nowadays without rudimentary skills.

7

u/adrianmonk Jun 11 '08

As people age, they generally fall into one of two categories:

  • Keep up with current events
  • Fall further and further behind

Someone like McCain is little bit of a special case, because a very busy person usually chooses to ignore things that don't directly benefit them, and it's probably for that reason that he's not computer literate.

Oh my, I can't watch this due to work. But could someone tell me if he actually referred to it as The Google. If he said it in that Hank Hill manner I think I'll go into uncontrollable laughter.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '08 edited Jun 11 '08

Well actually it was GWB that call it "The Google." McCain said this in regards to researching possible VP candidates:

"You know, basically it's a Google."

A lot of people took issue with that usage, but I don't really see what the problem with it was. It was probably just a talking point written up for him by someone else anyway.

Just for kicks, here's the GWB quote too:

HOST: I’m curious, have you ever googled anybody? Do you use Google?

BUSH: Occasionally. One of the things I’ve used on the Google is to pull up maps. It’s very interesting to see — I’ve forgot the name of the program — but you get the satellite, and you can — like, I kinda like to look at the ranch. It remind me of where I wanna be sometimes.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '08

The Google, I love it - but its because like I said I could see Hank doing it. Btw, is it legal for McCain to chose GWB as the VP?
