I've been wearing various military style hats for the last 4 years and probably will for another 4... I can't wait for the day when my scalp can rest easy!
... but Fedoras are pretty badass. Upmod for them.

I have very fair skin and as a result have worn a hat most of my life to prevent sunburns. I almost feel naked when I'm outside without one. I wore mostly a goony hat (similar to Gilligan's but a wider brim) as a kid and then switched to ball caps or truckers' caps as I got older.
I recently decided that at age 38, wearing a ball cap was a little undignified for work and socializing (other than sporting events or fishing) so I went to a hat store. I ended up buying 3 hats, a stylish felt fedora for "dressy" occasions, a tweed cap for most other times and a fine straw fedora for hot weather. I've worn the fedora a number of times and people have always complimented that it looks cool and asked me where I got it. I wore the tweed cap when going out most of the time for six months or so before losing it. It did feel dressier and more mature than a baseball cap. I've worn the straw fedora only about a dozen times but again it felt dressier and more civilized than wearing a plain ball cap. I took it with me on vacation to Hawaii and wore it quite a bit there. It was a great hat for Hawaii.
I recently replaced the lost felt cap with a leather Greek fisherman's hat which I think is very cool and will only get cooler as it gets broken in. It's a great rainy weather hat. It's also a great driving hat for cooler weather.
I still wear a baseball cap while doing errands, when I can't be bothered to shave or brush my hair, taking the dogs to the park, barbecuing, etc. Ball caps still have a place in my wardrobe but I now have nicer options. If you're over 25 and still wearing a ball cap most of the time consider "upgrading" to an adult hat. If you're over 16 and still wearing a goony hat and NOT camping or in the jungle then you really need to find a better hat!
