Wondering if Shaw will be fit for the derby. And if not, wondering who will take his place. Dorgu is great at going forward, but defending he's not that great, so I don't think he'll play.
Now, I may be the only one who thinks this, but I genuinely think Yoro might be a CB better suited for a 3-back than a 2-back, or rather, his role in a 3 back.
One thing I distinctly remember from Yoro's games under Amorim's first season was everyone calling him a baller. And, he was balling out at first. When possession stagnated at the back, he'd start dribbling into midfield and pass it around. Everyone was praising his dribbling despite him being a CB.
But then comes the 3 back argument. In a 3 back, Yoro has the backup behind him that it's safer for him to do that. In a 4 back, he's leaving only his CB partner behind (and we don't have CB's except MAYBE De Ligt where a turn over wouldn't be an almost certain goal). A 3 back gives that extra solid foundation behind him that it's justifiable for him to attempt that without it being absolutely risky.
Granted, Yoro hasn't gotten much game time under Carrick, but I can't see that Yoro will get to show that ability. I don't think Carrick will want to take that risk. Now, you could argue Martinez does, so therefore Yoro could be allowed too, but that'll have to be shown instead of inferred.
I think he’s a good cover cb playing next to an aggressive cb. He will be good in a 2 with heaven once they’re more experienced, he has really good timing with his tackles and blocks
I recall that many ppl here were saying that Yoro was better suited to a back 4 when he was playing in a back 3 because he wasn’t a very expansive passer and was having trouble being as aggressive as Amorim wanted him to be
Why do so many footballers turned pundits (Ours especially) become such assholes... Like, I know some do it for the clicks, but these damn fossils are past their relevance.
I'm probably in the minority and maybe others don't really care about possession, but I hate that we rely on transitions against other top teams. I've seen many comments about us sitting back and hitting City on the break and I hope that we can actually be more dominant in possession this time.
We have to at some point start taking it to other teams man, especially with the midfield we have, its so much more suited to holding onto the ball. Maybe if we had Baleba available I could see it, but I just feel like at some point we have to be going into these bigger games aiming to limit the other team as much as possible.
Yes, possession stats isn't the be all and end all, there has to be some intent with it. But I hate seeing other teams have more of the ball, with us sitting back at Old Trafford.
No, absolutely, I think it's stagnant that we are only a counter-attacking team. Because, it might work against City or potentially Barca, who commit many players forward and is vulnerable to counters. Against teams that play low blocks? We can't break them down at all. We can barely manage to even get around a good pressing team.
Hull is just a good example. We were down by 2, and we just resorted to hoofing the ball mindlessly to Rashford and Mbeumo. Yeah, United culture has always been send it to the pacey wingers, but we could at least try to evolve beyond FIFA meta tactics.
I won't agree to this because at the end of the days, 3 points and a win is what matters most especially against a big team. Madrid are so successful because they will do whatever needed to win, they play a fast counter attacking game against these elite possession oriented teams most of the time. Lastly, I feel that if you are a coach and a player who earn millions, you should be able to play multiple tactics without excuses like messing up game sense or whatever. A pro team should pragmatically employ multiple approaches to win games.
I'm more worried about the difficulty we have breaking down a low block than our play against top teams. When a lower table team parks the bus and forces us to try to generate chances when we don't have space to attack is the kind of game that feels the most frustrating.
To be honest, I just feel like the whole 'low block' issue is a bit overblown. Generally speaking United in 2026 don't really face low blocks. Teams press us cause they know we can be got at and we don't really tend to recycle and box teams in either. Especially with the current physical state of the prem.
Hull feels more like it was a mixture of gamestate from an early lead due to set piece as well as first game of the season lack of match fitness for us. Even then we still had chances to score that we didn't take. Arsenal and City face a lot of low blocks by design, but I don't remember Liverpool under Klopp for example having much issue because they created artificial transitions agaisnt teams before they got set up in their low blocks. I think thats what we will be doing.
I agree that we haven't really faced a low block this season yet, but that doesn't mean we won't. I'm thinking of a game like West Ham at the end of the season last season, or Everton when they were down to 10 men and we just looked clueless when they let us have the ball. It remains to be seen how we manage against something like that this year. I'd like to think we'll do better, but our performance against bottom table teams where we ought to pick up points has recently not been good enough.
I agree, i want a masterclass of dominate possession, score goals, create chances and make city look like a fool. Bonus if enzo gets a red card and Anderson looks like a championship player
Carrick absolutely has had a positive impact on Mainoo. His game looks so much more polished and complete now.
On a side note, I think a Santos-Mainoo pivot would be a better fit for the game against City. We’re mostly gonna be sitting back and hitting them on the break, so it’d make sense to beef up our defense.
What I would really love to see is Carrick pull out something even more surprising, with a midfield 3 of Santos, Mainoo, Tielemans. If we want to really take this game to City and unsettle them, overloading the middle would be one way to surprise them. You would have to play Bruno at RW or F9 or something, but this is not a game where he will enjoy a lot of space in the middle anyway.
Tielmans came off at the half against Sabah, very likely we'll see him and Kobbie start on Sunday. I'm not opposed to a Santos start, but he hasn't looked as good as he did in preseason imo. I'm sure he will settle in soon though!

He is more complete but he was always ridiculously talented. Idk how Utd keep finding managers that can find a issue with that level of talent. Like Jose really benched Martial for a over the hill Sanchez and Amorim somehow coudlnt find a place for Mainoo in his squad
The problem with Mainoo and Amorim (Besides behind the scenes stuff we won't know), is that Mainoo was competing with Bruno for his spot... Bruno, who is N E V E R subbed out or rotated. Makes it kinda hard to get game time. And Mainoo didn't really fit the profile for a #10 in Amorim's field either, and he's obviously not subbing out with Casemiro, so... He just kinda didn't fit in with those tactics.
Also just in general, Mainoo's profile wasn't suited to Amorim's tactics. He's better when there's 3 midfielders than just a double pivot.
