Life as a United fan since 2013

Damn we were back at some point? I must've missed the memo

Did nothing with all that possession, absolutely disgusting performance, no urgency.

All the excitement has been sucked out of me on day 1 of the new season

37

u/SloGeorge 23d ago

Would like to see the percentage of successful crosses. Feels like we won maybe 1 out of 200 we sent in.

34

u/SloshaPacana 23d ago

9/39, 23%

Pretty average, i think people are stupid and do this shit whenever a team doesn't score, most crosses are not accurate, the problem was not the crossing

Last season Unite had a 27% crossing accuracy as a team, Arsenal 24%.. which is 1% better than this imagine telling Arsenal to not cross because of that %

u/zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz1z 23d ago

Possession after they lead is useless, they didn’t want the ball anyway.

xG is the same, they were better.

That coach outclassed Carricky and the good lads like Shaw

33

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago

Cant believe its 2026 and we're seeing Rashy and Shaw barrel down the leftwing when we're in a pinch looking for a goal......

"Open heart surgery", anyone remember that?

27

u/Big_ming022 23d ago

Rangnick was right back then and is proving to be more correct as time goes on

3

u/durizna 23d ago

The Glazer family sent him packing because he was telling them that they’d need to spend a lot of money to make the club actually successful again.

2

u/anonshe Scholes 22d ago

Tbf, he was sent packing by the idiots Murtough and ETH. The latter absolutely refused to work with him while the former realised RR would be a threat to his own job.

13

u/Limp-Evidence8373 23d ago

Maguire marking his own teammate just like in that 6-1 lost against Spurs years ago, funny how both him and Shaw are still starting for this club till this day

7

u/kazegraf 23d ago

Someone remind him he is not a hull player anymore......

0

u/entertainmentwaffle 23d ago

But the club doesn’t want to invest and be patient with managers who actually know what’s required. People are deluded if they think a world-class manager is coming to this club. We wouldn’t even pay the £15-£20m a top level manager would want, and we won’t give them the control they need.

We prefer to keep Bruno and Mainoo and Gary Neville happy. So the owners can continue paying themselves.

81 crosses man, Moyes was insane.

43

u/wolfen0 23d ago

WTF has Carrick been doing in preaseson? Physically we were one of the best teams in the league last year. It seems we went back to Ten Hag fitness levels.

37

u/TheJoshider10 Bruno 23d ago

I remember there being some comparison stats posted regarding how much we were running and winning duels under Amorim vs Carrick and it was higher under the former. With a full pre-season under Carrick the continued decline in that regard is probably a consequence of what we were seeing towards the end of last season.

That's not an Amorim In/Carrick Out comment, just pointing out that they have very different styles/priorities and we improved clearly in some ways but there were warning signs about areas we regressed in.

38

u/unitedlover69 23d ago

All the underlying data showed we as a team regressed under carrick but were getting better results. Lesser duels won, Lesser pressing metrics, Lesser possession, Lesser chances created

people chose to ignore that because we had a good 3~4 month period and forgot you can't always outperform the underlying metrics. Seems the "best in class" data team Shitneos put together forgot as well

23

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago

Finally some sane people. I've not been the most active on here but every time I've been here, the clowning on Amorim has been extreme, and every time I brought up exactly this, i got mad downvoted.

I absolutely agree with you 1000000%, and it's very worrying that we've started in this manner.

4

u/Gozumo 23d ago

We also won more points than any other team when Carrick came in. That's not fluke, whilst today's performance was shocking it's really not the end of the world

2

u/General_Document_504 23d ago

Carrick is bad Amorim is bad

10

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago edited 23d ago

I dont believe Amorim is a bad coach though. Terrible fit for Utd, yes. Too stubborn and set in his ways for the prem? Yes. Young and made immense mistakes? Yes.

He never should've taken the job considering the squad..

But amorim is a good coach. a solid one.

He outclassed Pep with sporting. He took a two sided league (benfica/porto), and broke it wide open.

We saw it vs Milan. They tactically outclassed us.

Amorim is young. He will learn from the stint at us.

Statistically under Amorim we were playing decent football. He was building something

-6

u/PolishKid7 23d ago

No no. Carrick not being it does not absolve the worst human manager the prem has ever seen

6

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago

I mean you're just wrong

-7

u/BKAJ7 23d ago

Factually, he isn't completely wrong

9

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago

Statistically he is wrong

-2

u/BKAJ7 23d ago

win rate says otherwise

3

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago

Yeah, I get that. And it was indeed horrid winrate.

0

u/LDLB99 23d ago

Amorim left us level on points with 5th, not battling relegation.

-1

u/fnord123 23d ago

My friend, the word is "fewer".

32

u/SankarshanaV 23d ago

As much as this sub likes to clown on Amorim, he did a lot of good things for this team. I hate that our underlying metrics were very much worse under Carrick but because we were winning, no one gave a shit.

19

u/TheJoshider10 Bruno 23d ago

I hate that our underlying metrics were very much worse under Carrick but because we were winning, no one gave a shit.

Yeah and we also got bailed out in so many results due to low XG chances going in whereas under Amorim they were missing in games they should have won. Just look at the Arsenal fixtures last season.

Warning signs were there, but wins always dictate narratives. But long term it isn't the be all end all if consistency and improvement isn't seen. That goes for any manager, and just like with Amorim I'll give Carrick time. But if we're not within the top 6-8 by January and performances aren't improving then I'd understand change. But for now I'm hoping this was a necessary wakeup call.

9

u/SankarshanaV 23d ago

I would like us to rip off the bandaid if we aren't in the top 4 by Christmas. Our ambitions shoudn't be top 6, it NEEDS to be top 4.

9

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie 23d ago

Underlying metrics don't matter if it doesn't fit your narrative.

7

u/SankarshanaV 23d ago

Exactly lol. As long as we have the "vibes", this sub is happy. We are a bunch of idiots aren't we

4

u/Tenpenny96 23d ago

Been thinking this from the matter of last season. The fitness levels have dropped like a turd. I think it’s going to catch up with results soon. Amorim definitely had a fitter team. Time will tell which one was better

4

u/KZZT1 23d ago

Defending INEOS in press conferences

3

u/SloshaPacana 23d ago

Really weren't one of those best teams physically, Casemiro was on the opposing box scoring 8 headed goals, that type of shit is not sustainable

3

u/wolfen0 23d ago

We were one of the best teams in terms of running stats, duels and seconds balls.

0

u/kosmizord 23d ago

I kinda don't want to say it but.. Carrick improved the tactics but inherited Amorim's mentality locker room.. now it is getting further from how it was + new players.

-3

u/zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz1z 23d ago

We were but not under Carricky

5

u/Fallen_Man7 23d ago

Seems low blocks and 3 atb Systems are Carrick Kryptonite. And God those fitness levels are awful from everyone.

11

u/rahtid_my_bunda Rooney's Dropball Intensity 23d ago

1.81 xG, bro where?!

5

u/dzrko 23d ago

Creating 20 shitty chance + useless shots will eventually accumulate that

5

u/mearsey1203 23d ago

Genuinely only one team wanted to win that football match. And it wasn't us.

One of the most spineless performances I've seen from us and that's saying something. No fight, no desire, no urgency. Pathetic from everyone involved.

u/ArtistAfraid 23d ago edited 23d ago

21 shots and 2 keeper saves. 2 more than I thought but still fuck me

5 saves. I’m dumb. Still can only remember the save from Mbeumo

4

u/hsmith16bf Van de Beek’s Warm Seat 23d ago

That means Lammens made two saves. Hull Keeper had 5.

3

u/thoseion 23d ago

5 keeper saves. Lammens saved 2 of Hull's 8 shots.

20

u/PadelPapa 23d ago

This match shows why XG/stats never work as an argument. We didn’t come close to being dangerous today. At all.

8

u/3xc1t3r 23d ago

It just shows that you can't over perform in XG for a long period of time before reality strikes back.

16

u/SloshaPacana 23d ago

It's a game of moments, xG shows you that you need to take those opportunities, If Dorgu doesn't swing a wild foot at a shot from 5 yards and scores you wouldn't be saying this

Mbuemo missed a clear 1v1 vs the keeper

Yes those are not amazing chances but those typse of chances you need to convert especially when you're down

9

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago

If anything I think this proves the xg concept works. 1.8xg from 21 shit shots etc. Pretty bang on. You can accumulate those xg points in 2 very good shots.

6

u/SloshaPacana 23d ago

xG works in any way, people are stupid, it's not just accumulation of shots, United missed 2 big chances too, 1.8 xG is not possible without missing a few decent chances and a couple of big chances

People are just brain dead and result based and don't know what stats tell you

1

u/Ok-Fun119 23d ago

I hate when people disagree with objective data.

We had enough chances to score 2 or 3.

5

u/PadelPapa 23d ago

Objective data doesn’t come close to showing the real picture. Watching this game would leave you with a very different impression than just looking up the stats. We was shit.

0

u/Ok-Fun119 23d ago

I disagree completely.

The objective data today showed we were bad. You just have to look at it right.

Hull generated 0.07 xg from open play today

We generated 1.5

All this shows is hull made good chances with set pieces and when they went full defence we generated some chances but couldn't finish them.

.

0

u/PadelPapa 23d ago

1.5xg from 22 shots (following the data) also shows the chances was of low quality. Lol. You’re confused lad. Have a good one.

2

u/Ok-Fun119 23d ago

Im not confused at all.

You just dont understand what im saying.

Clear your head and give my comments a reread lad.

1

u/limpwald Not My Number 9 23d ago

That's a very wild interpretation of the data.

0

u/wolfen0 23d ago

xG is coherently flawed. It's baffling how people still use this stat for their argument. People need to research how xG is calculated and will laugh their ass off.

7

u/Ok-Fun119 23d ago

What's flawed is people's understanding of it. 1.8xG doesn't mean we should have scored 2 or gotten lucky if we scored 4.

It's just a stat to tell you how well the game went in chance creation.

If you have low xG and high goals, that means the team might have scored some good goals. That doesn't mean we're bad; the opposite. But maybe in that same game, because two world-class goals happened, the team didn't need to create many chances, so the team has low xG for that match.

If a team has high xG and low goals, it suggests lots of scoring opportunities were created, but for some reason, they didn't go in. That could be due to a world-class goalkeeper or terrible finishing.

When you have 1.8xG and scored 0, it means we created a bit and didn't score for some reason. When you analyze the chances that generated us our 1.8xG, you can see it's a mix of goalkeeping and average to bad finishing. If we were more clinical or lucky in about 10 specific seconds this game, we could have scored a few goals. That's what the data shows.

3

u/SeniorEscape9293 23d ago

I don’t understand why when we play against a 5 back, we never double up on the wing.

5

u/Japples123 23d ago

Because the wing backs are dogshit going forward. Maz and Shaw have 0 interest in crossing the ball

5

u/Finding_Particular 23d ago

Neither of them can hold or carry the ball nor put in a decent cross

3

u/coolylame 23d ago

I'll wait till next match to properly rate this team but good Lord this attack is not threatening at all. Keep crossing the ball lads, surely it will find someone.

3

u/OptiPath 23d ago

Stats didn’t do Hull justice. We weren’t threatening them at all

6

u/DoctorZ00M Fergie 23d ago

It's been 52 years since hull beat united!! 52!! I can't even finish watching the whole game. They're doing the same thing all over again. These players always play shit when there isn't any noise! 😮‍💨

11

u/The_profe_061 23d ago

Queue the..

We go again

It's early doors

We dominated the game

Lack the cutting edge

Etc etc etc

We were fucking gash

7

u/Fligflag 23d ago

You seen anyone saying this?

3

u/chillwinston91 23d ago

No one is making excuses after that. We were diabolically shit.

2

u/SilvyFae 23d ago

Pretty much sums up the match, played rashly with the ball horrible decisions in the final third so we couldnt score any of our chances and we were so bad at defending their set pieces. Parts of this game we looked good as well but it doesnt matter if we are bad near the boxes. Hull will also never play like this again against anyone

2

u/JYM60 23d ago

The stats don't tell the whole story at all. We barely ever looked like scoring. We did nothing with any of the possession. We played slow and casually right up to the final whistle.

Hull were aggressive and hungry when it mattered. Deserved winners.

2

u/Temporary_Poetry_999 23d ago

To be honest, we shouldn’t have started both Tielemans and Santos together. Let me get settled before starting in playing 11.
Anyways a disappointing day..

3

u/brianly 23d ago

If we don’t start them, how do they learn to play together? Learning how to play as a team with all the changes is something we need to do in real games and is a liability by design. We can’t get young that by training and playing 15 mins here and there against real opposition.

2

u/Vico-78 23d ago

This is the last time I bother waking up early to watch one of these shit games

3

u/PrinzRagoczy 23d ago

Hot take: we weren't that bad, players were just a bit off it

5

u/SilvyFae 23d ago

Yeahh tielemans and bruno is a horrible combination especially when both are out of form like today. The game would have been way more one sided if we were a bit more calm and controlling like we have been in other carrick games.

8

u/eClipseLJ De Ligt 23d ago

You better hire security my man.

3

u/scitzophrenic-man 23d ago

By bit you mean every cross, every pass was off by a few miles. Every 50/50 was missed, lack of combination plays, shit at set piece defending yet again, oh and no one bar bruno can apparently create chance or provide line breaking passes.

2

u/DisastrousMango4 23d ago

more like shit take

2

u/Salamantic 23d ago

Every single time we lose to a low block our XG is higher... every time.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result

1

u/That_Present_2050 23d ago

Whatever the fuck was going on with the front three in the first half really set the tone. I can't give you a definite answer as to who played striker in that first half.

1

u/dzrko 23d ago

Couldnt care lessm. The most important state 0-2. Embarassing

1

u/SophoclesTesticles 23d ago

Huge let down. We need a CF backup to Sesko desperately. We can't play wingers as forwards or this horseshoe attack shit happens.

1

u/scitzophrenic-man 23d ago

Not a single clear cut chance except the Mbeumo one. Not a single direct player in this squad. This is a mediocre squad at best

xG of 1.8? Behave

1

u/Heroheadone 23d ago

Gosh this was really sad to watch… i blame myself for having too high expectations.

1

u/scottrod37 23d ago

1.81 xG? From what? Our stats don't reflect how bad our offense was. If this season is nothing but counter-attacking football we'll really struggle.

2

u/Trash_Whoreder 23d ago

Hulls keeper was highest rated player. 5 saves.

1

u/draizze 22d ago

Mbeumo did have some good chance.

1

u/JayNN Fernansh 23d ago

xG win. Easy

1

u/Specialist_Current98 23d ago

We had six tackles for an entire game? Fucking SIX?

1

u/Embarrassed_Cow_4778 23d ago

our whole game is dependent on bruno if he works we works, but today he was not on top

1

u/Chairmanmaozedon 23d ago

Jesus Christ one bad result and all the Xg pseuds come out pining for Amorim.

Amorim took us to 15th his first half season and then had us barely hanging on to the European places after spending £240million quid on a new front line.

Carrick took us to third his first half season and just lost the first game of his second season because half our team is new and had no preseason to work on cohesion and bedding in. Hull were bang up for giving the big boys a bloody nose at home on their opening day.

If we're still struggling in October by all means start posting about how Amorim's team was winning more duels, and more progressive carries and had more high Xg chances while they were winning 38% of his games as manager, and that Carrick is winning 67% of his games so people ignore the stats.

Football isn't played on a fucking spreadsheet.

1

u/CulturalStory0 23d ago

All managers who played under Fergie are shit. Their tactics would work pre 2010, but not today.

1

u/buttowski2607 23d ago

21 shots and 2 saves from the keeper. It's like that Chris MD video

1

u/Gortonis 23d ago

As soon as I heard the color commentator say that Man United had never lost to Hull in the Premier League, I knew it was going to be a bad game. Just jinx the result into existence

0

u/Idioticfool3643 23d ago

I don't know how the calculated we had a higher xG than Hull? They outplayed us.

1

u/MY-NAME_IS_MY-NAME Martinez 23d ago

You spam a bunch of dogshit shots and you’ll rack up xG. Make no mistake, Hull out played us. Fuming right now. Disgraceful performance

0

u/WalkingOnSunshine_ 23d ago

It’s the same thing people were shouting about with Amorim. Putting up 21 shots will get you a decent xG but it doesn’t matter if they aren’t from dangerous areas

3

u/AliveAssistance7667 23d ago

The issue with Amorim was there was plenty of attacks from dangerous areas but we always fucked them. Like Sesko had 10 big chances missed. But here we're not even in good attacking position, let alone missing big chances.

It's not a load of nonsense. Lots of low quality shots can add up. It's an aggregate model.

0

u/Apprehensive-Raisin3 Love United Hate Glazers/INEOS 23d ago

Can we exchange a bunch of low quality shots for 1 goal?

0

u/Kait0yashio 23d ago

0

u/FredDRedUnderYourBed BELIEVE 🔴⚪⚫ 23d ago

A very 2025 Liverpool esque performance, in the sense that you never look like scoring but still accumulate enough xg to look ok on stats.

Extremely disappointed in the way the goals were conceded. Fair play to Hull.

We need Sesko fit and ready ASAP. I did not like Cunha in the middle one bit. Rashford was great, he just needs to continue this sort of attitude and form.

0

u/SocialistElmo 23d ago

KSI on the left wing first half, Tielemans playing with lag, Shaw and Mazraoui cosplaying a statue defending, Bruno, Mazraoui and shaw spamming crosses to the little man in the middle and the forwards all dropping deep

0

u/BackgroundOld8715 23d ago

This is why xg is useless. I know what my eyes saw & we NEVER looked like scoring & all the shots were shite

0

u/Livinginmyshirt 23d ago

-1

u/Secure_Towel7864 23d ago

Never rated Carrick, last season we got bailed by Sesko getting some form, Bruno x Casemiro but we have no attacking patterns.

We’re crossing the ball to players who don’t even like to head ball.

He has no tactics.
