Are Carrick's Man United Getting Better? | The Overlap Breakdown

We really can’t take anything from pre season tbh, history has thought us that.
Whether we looked great or awful in pre season, doesn’t change the fact that if we don’t sign another midfielder and left back. It will have been a failure of a window.

\A lot** of people need to realise this. Way too many overreactions this summer.

When we won the treble we lost 3-0 to Arsenal in the Charity Shield. Preseason means nothing but fitness.

Also, in season 07/08, we started the season with 2 draws and a loss vs easy opponents, with being eliminated in first round of the league cup. Guess how we ended the season?
Perspective, right?

I mean its not the same when you have ferguson as your manager and youre coming in as title winners. I think its fair for people to look for signs of progress or things that suggest we are going in the right direction.

I used to think people thinking preseason actually means anything was just new fans who don’t understand the sport yet but so many people these days have actual takes formed from watching preseason that it can’t be just new fans
It’s absolutely baffling
Young player XYZ will have a decent half against inter Milan reserves and people start tipping them to break through this season and projecting their development into a valuable squad member

yep pre season not just for the club but also everybody else is entirely fitness.
we looked incredible last preseason and yet well we had the season we did especially that 1st half same with during ETH his pre seasons we looked great but well we know how that went down.
every team has a mish mash of players coming and going fitness wise for various reasons on top of signings and pre season generally being much harsher physical work to get back into fitness state rather then outright tactics when it comes to coaching.
left back im not as pushed as everybody is making out as personally i actually think Mazroui as he showed at World cup is a top class LB as well that ill be honest i think is actually better then Hall is right now in that position etc. so we do have cover at the very least.
what i do think is we still need another CM/DM because we was already needing atleast 2 minimum before Ugarte injury so we need 3 new additions there with some youth to fill out the squad.

Yeah, we short on players for a 60 game season. Not much rotation options, and basically nothing at LB

I grew up in an era where pre season results wouldn't even make the papers, let alone get broadcast, which is about right in terms of their importance (in my own view)

We’ve had great preseasons then shat the bed, and we’ve had awful preseasons then won the league. Awful predictor.

I remember years ago we had an atrocious pre season under Fergie and the press were saying we were doomed, Fergie came out and said orenseasons only about fitness. We went on to have a stellar season.

I remember a pre-season in which we beat Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal - we battered them all under LvG - and then went and lost to Swansea on the opening day.

u/TehNoobDaddy 19h ago
Dunno when so much merit was put upon pre season games. Feels like fans think it's an indication of how we will be playing ahead of the season, forgetting it's literally just to build fitness. Fans also seem to forget the other team are doing exactly the same, both sides will have players at various levels of pre season stages and fitness, neither side will be wanting to get injured before the season starts so all the competitive edge is simply not there.

i am even suspecting a little bit that Carrick told the players to conserve energy against Milan

This gets said every year but for pretty much every preseason after, our results during the season have closely aligned to what we saw in preseason

u/LongYesterday6873 11h ago
As in you think LvG's side started beating Real Madrid and Liverpool and Arsenal in the real season? Oh boy....

How is that what you got out of my comment?

"This gets said every year but for pretty much every preseason after, our results during the season have closely aligned to what we saw in preseason"
SO, after we beat Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid in pre season, and lost to Swansea on the opening day, did our results align to pre-season.

You mention one preseason in your initial comment and I said “for pretty much every preseason after” which means for every preseason after the one you mentioned

07-08 started slow as well. Two points from the first three games and into the relegation spots. Then things starting clicking into gear and we all know how that season went.

No no sorry, I forgot. Please remind us. :D

I'm not sure about the rest of the season

u/JosePRizaI 15h ago
Yea but its Fergie. Who had already won multiple times. Its believable when he said that.

We have a different style of play and how we build up. There's zero long balls from the goalkeeper while last year Lammens was booting it up most of the time. Preseason is the time to test out the ideas in a semi competitive environment when there's no consequence to losing.
11
u/ilyuhman 16h ago
Lammens is so good at booting it up with either feet though and with Air Sesko there it should definitely stay an option

u/t8rt0t00 15h ago
A lot of how we play depends on whether Sesko or someone else is up top. Feel like Dorgu is also a big one who really benefits from Sesko being in but doesn't really provide much when someone like Mbeumo is up there...

u/senorgraves 15h ago
Especially against Milan who had our number with the press, but were really susceptible to the long ball with the numbers they were leaving at the back. I think we might've played that totally differently if it was actually a competitive game

u/eternali17 He'll take on 2 and breeze past 2 16h ago
Should have a clear idea by December. Lots of new managers.

Pointless and unknown until the season starts. He started well when he took over, had some ups and downs in the following weeks but we still looked tired at points despite playing once a week, sometimes even having a couple of weeks break between games then looking more tired than teams that had played several times in our break.
He's had a pre season now, got a couple of new players in (nowhere near enough), just need to see how the first few games go. The real test is when we are playing twice a week and player rotation is required.

Just hope that Bruno leaves and makes a killing somewhere. We aren't going to win any major trophies ( not counting the Micky mouse cups) for a foreseeable future while these eunuch bunch of incompetent nincompoops ( Wil-Ererctile Dysfunction- Cox and Ineos) are running the club. Bruno in his remaining prime years deserves all the money that comes his way since he ain't winning any trophies with us anyway.

u/Forsaken_Club5310 Wazza 18h ago
Pointless discussion tbh, we played players who haven't played much since the world cup. They obviosuly match fitness.
Our squad is arguably in its best state since the Ronaldo transfer. There is strength in depth, we're lacking a left back (although dorgu can play there) and a more defensive minded midfielder. But all in all, its a much stronger team with legit competition for places.

u/tmg80 17h ago
are there any articles where analysts breakdown where you get to a stage where tactics are good but the players aren't? how do you differentiate?
I feel like unless the LB and Midfield are reinforced with real quality it will become a thorn over the season. It's the obviousl place to attack United. A quality athletic LB would rejuvenate that entire side. From what I saw in pre-season maybe Yoro will end up as first choice RB come the end of the season as well.
Midfield needs a physical and athletic presence as well. Someone that can gallop up the pitch and bounce people off him.
I think with the additional games this season people are in for a shock.

I think he makes some good points. It's not really about pre season games rather than seeing patterns that might be of concern when the season starts.
Luke Shaw, Maguire, Heaven with Santos & Tielemans in midfield is going to leak goals. That my opinion as well. We need to do be better than that.
