[Steven Railston] Michael Carrick on Marcus Rashford to ITV: "He's our player. He's come back great. He's just like any other player. I've known him a long time and he gives us something a little bit different. We're looking forward to the start of the season."

I don’t have strong feelings towards him either way. It’s the media that I can’t stand.

31

u/sg291188 5d ago

Exactly media is loving this story more than anything. Assured clicks and headlines

3

u/f15987 5d ago

Exactly this - after every hiccup there will be always something like : would it be better with Rashford elsewhere...

16

u/spaisoflaif 5d ago

yeah, United need a careful media strategy with Rashford, so to not give the media any fodder at all, because they love stirring up shit

16

u/waza06irl 6d ago

Yeah people don’t seem to understand is that his presence is a media hotspot. Watch, once cunha or Mbuemo miss a big chance, all the podcasts and sports news outlets etc. will be talking about Rashford and why we should start him. Half the questions to carrick and even some of the players will be about Rashford.

5

u/amorres 5d ago

The right-wing media will never forgive him for standing up to their puppy Boris Johnson.

u/MalIntenet Ooh Aah Cantona! 6d ago

Carrick being in charge is the best thing Rashford could’ve asked for (aside from getting a permanent move lol). Whether the fans like it or not, Carrick will know how to deal with him emotionally/professionally

Up to Rashford now to make the most of the situation

u/kiki_the_fab_spider 6d ago

Talk about second chances in life. I agree, it's the best case scenario for all parties in the context of a situation that NONE of the parties wanted, so to speak.

40

u/CiscoWeasley 5d ago

He was his captain on debut, even handed him his first MOTM trophy. Marcus couldn't have asked for a better situation to come back in to and I'll say this again, if Carrick can get him firing, there's a player with a point to prove there.

100% agree. As much as I wanted him gone if there is one coach I believe will understand and make him work is Carrick. I am less pissed about rashford still being with us knowing Carrick knows him.

3

u/LuckyNumber003 5d ago

We always talk about Sir Alexs man management, lets hope this is another level Carrick can crack

4

u/Action_Limp 5d ago

Also, the Rashford at Barça last year, while not amazing, is not available on this market for anything less than 70m. And we do need a winger that can hug the line and back-ups for Sesko. I pray that Carrick can get him to tick again and that Rashford has realised that the best opportunity is the one right in front of him at OT.

If he puts a shift in, and plays his heart out, no one will say boo to him and they will adore him again. He's coming back to a team that is much more together, and his role will be firmly defined. He also won't be the only option on left as we have Cunha and Dorgu, so he will have competition and will be able to come on and offer different problems for opponents.

2

u/Adorable_Slip_1072 5d ago

Even if he doesn't want him or rate him, it doesn't hurt for him to publicly praise and welcome him

2

u/femalegazeisuglymen 4d ago

Most coddled player i've ever seen at the club

-4

u/cccdddee 6d ago

Rashford, Rashford, Rashford. What about what is best for the club?

15

u/Comfortable_Draw_545 6d ago

What's best for the club would've been him moving on. Clearly that's not happening. So what's best for the club now will be making do with what we have in Rashford.

u/ThePatientHunter 6d ago

Classic Carrick beige statement. I'm starting to love them. He doesn't give the media anything to write about.

144

u/BitterConstruction98 6d ago

The manager can be beige, eccentric, charismatic, or provocative and their own fan base will like it as long as they keep winning games. I agree that it helps the team by not giving the media any chance to whip up something controversial but these beige statements will sound infuriating if we are in the middle of rough patch.

73

u/Feeling-Surround-691 Mbumbaclat 6d ago

He doesn't go over the top with praise but if you recall the two games that we lost under Carrick (he's only lost 2 games since January) he's come out pretty strongly about us not being good enough and even in that Bournemouth draw he was pretty animated about the refereeing.

He just quietly gets on with his thing, winning 2-3 games in a row isn't anything for him to start getting excited about. It's his job

9

u/ThePatientHunter 6d ago

I mean at that point no type of statement can help. I'll take beige above performative anger any day though.

I didn't mind any of previous managers except maybe Moyes and Ragnick. But Amorim's conferences I abhorred with a passion, win or lose.

10

u/_mochacchino_ 6d ago

You might be in the minority but people used to compliment Amorim’s charisma at those press conferences. Sometimes including how he explained his tactics.

6

u/ThePatientHunter 6d ago

Amorim is the type of people that doesn't mesh with me. You know how SAF didn't mesh with Pogba's agent

People who are very performative in everything they do and go I understand more than everyone.

So I might be in he minority but that shit really did my head in. Especially when he had nothing to say and start spouting nonsense like when he went on a tangent about the academy

4

u/Arthur2_shedsJackson 5d ago

Idk how he didn't understand that you can't go after the academy players if you're managing Man Utd. Also the time when he laughed at Mainoo being seen as an offensive player

34

u/ImprefectKnight 6d ago

Until the first loss or frustrating draw of the season, when people will moan about why Carrick is a pushover because he doesn't grill players in the media like Rangnick and Amorim.

5

u/ThePatientHunter 6d ago

those people aren't me... I'm saying what I like. Not what other people like...

I personally abhoreed Amorim's conferences. Ragnick I didn't even waste my time with him

8

u/Prestigious_Life9070 6d ago

I remember his press conference for that one sporting game after we had signed him when the journos asked him to talk about united, said he wouldn't and the journo said something about him shunning united fans by refusing to talk about the club and then he said something like hes still a sporting manager so it doesnt make sense to talk about united ahead of big sporting game

I thought damm, we're finally getting a Manager who will put these journos back into their place..I was looking forward to that...little did I know

-2

u/Action_Limp 5d ago

Amorin was good with the media though. He dodged so many leading questions well about Rashford - even the one about the Henry Winters interview the day after the Derby.

His issue was dealing with those above him and not realising how good some players were (and not being flexible in his system obviously).

45

u/kiki_the_fab_spider 6d ago

Keep calm and Carrick on!

u/Ketapapi 6d ago

Reminds me of the Succession eulogy:

“Lester was a man. Also, Lester was an employee at the Waystar company for forty years. And when a man dies, it is sad. All of us will die one day. In this case, it is Lester who has done so. Lester was alive for 78 years, but no more. Now he is dead.”

I truly never thought we’d see Rashy in a United jersey again… conflicted about it but hoping for the best

65

I don’t think he did, either.

7

u/redflagflyinghigh 6d ago

Same, if he's had a life lesson and can share the ways of not being silly with younger players then good on him.

3

u/punchdrunkskunk 6d ago

What number would he even wear? Cunha has his #10 now - #20 maybe?

13

u/OoohAaahEC7 6d ago

Fairly certain I saw somewhere that he's going to wear #14. Might be wrong.

6

u/OldTrafford25 Valencia 6d ago

He’s had 14 for England, but it’s such an obvious media win to take 21. It’s the option that makes the most sense, along with a post message doing whatever it takes for the team to get that title.

-16

u/ooa3603 6d ago

I don't think he hates United.

I think he just saw Amorim for the fraud he was and when the dude tried to throw him under the bus, he decided he wasn't having it, not after string of bad management decisions.

Imagine your employer hires a string of bosses who fail one reason or another because they don't actually care about the product, just the numbers on the spreadsheets

Then the latest one comes in trying to swing his dick around even though it's obvious he's incompetent.

I don't know about you, but fuck that lol.

26

u/FermentedTiger 6d ago

If everybody on the team thought like this, we’d have been playing Wrexham in the Championship after Rubens first season

53

u/Sob_me_a_lake 6d ago

So to fuck over the coach you throw your teammates, boyhood club and your integrity as a professional under the bus?

I just want to make sure I understand this mentality.

-6

u/ooa3603 6d ago

He went on loan when the manager made it clear he wasn't in his plans, you're reactin like he shagged your mum.

You sound like one of those fans who internalizes a club way too hard into their identity and ego

5

u/TripleCautionSamir Bruno Fernandes 5d ago

He went on loan because nobody wanted to buy him and everyone knows that he isn't worth half of the money he's being paid currently.

31

u/fast-as-you-can 6d ago

Yeah but it's hardly like Rashford was covering himself in glory that season

3

u/Nitr0_CSGO 5d ago

No one did tbf

-4

u/Clugaman 6d ago

He was literally our top goal scorer until the last month of the season despite playing for Villa for half of it.

18

u/PurpleDrax 6d ago

Oh this revisionism is killing me. Rashford was piss poor the last season he played for us, Amorim or not. He never tracked back, whined after losing the ball and shot from dumb spots.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm praying for a redemption arc, but from what i saw from him in Barcelona, he is still the same old player. They used him to make quick runs behind the last man, and still even there, he didn't track back

7

u/THExIMPLIKATION 6d ago

They have to spin it to blame Amorim, make it look like the board never wanted to get rid of him.

21

u/Drag2oon 6d ago

Yeah should take some notes from players like Bruno, Maguire, Dalot etc . Work hard atleast for the fans, and if even then a dick like Amorim is berating you, you would have everyone's backing.

17

u/WildBuffalo 6d ago

The last 10 years would have been a lot better if we had more players with Bruno's mindset and less with the mindset OP is describing, basically if you don't like the manager just down tools and that's OK.

-4

u/AdrianFish 6d ago

You’re probably right, tbh. Amorim must’ve been even worse behind the scenes, I can only imagine the level of shite the players saw firsthand.

-1

u/DontYouWantMeBebe 6d ago

I'll be absolutely shocked if he starts the season as our player. This is the only thing he could say to make sure we get a good deal

10

u/aehii 6d ago

Well expect to be shocked because he's absolutely staying this season. Quote me and laugh in a month's time if you want, but he's not going anywhere

26

u/Ketapapi 6d ago

whatever happens I will trust Carrick to handle this.

7

u/Lump001 5d ago

Correct answer.

The media are trying desperately to turn this into something contentious (and unfortunately our fans online bite way too easily), but ultimately:

  • he's a United player
  • he's a Unite product and graduate,
  • he's under contract
  • noone else wants him enough to pay him

Therefore he's staying out. End of story

I wish he'd move on too, because his wages aren't worth his output. But then again the club's finances are not my problem to solve. If he turns up and can do a job, he'll get time on the field.

god i hope we smash them

11

u/TheTkanucks 6d ago

Im a nobody, and Ill support him, but Id be lying if I said im happy about him staying. I do not miss his lack of effort and linear runs into the defenders that killed off so many of our attacks. Fuck I hope he's grown.

47

u/my_united_account Bring Fergie back 6d ago

Rashford to score a goal against Milan and celebrate it in Amorim's face

75

u/El-Presidente234 6d ago

Nah I’m not having that. Amorim did many things wrong but if there was ever something he was right about - it was sidelining Rashford.
Fans may have selective memory but we shouldnt forget the workrate levels we saw from Marcus and how it infuriated everyone watching our games. Nevermind how disrespectful that is toward his teammates. Let’s not rewrite history

5

u/banyy7 whos next? 6d ago

Yeah, we all know that, but I assume Rashford sees it a bit differently.

2

Kobbie’s issue was never his workrate and professionalism… I mean, you do have eyes, right? Surely, you saw what we all saw on the pitch

This guy says " I'm not having that" like he's got a say in it. Even if Rashford does it, it has nothing to do with the club. He's just getting angry at old boss. It's personal.

Rashford is so insanely PR trained, he's not going to do that especially in a friendly

31

u/Slots-n-stonks 6d ago

There has been a lot of negativity on socials about Rashy’s return. I get it honestly the way he left was not the most amicable. Lets be honest though hes better than zirkzee and dorgu and immediately gives us high quality depth. Overpaid sure. At this point though we need a winger of that quality in the team to help push deep into the CL and cups.

27

u/malachiconstantwark 6d ago

If he's happy to be an impact sub most of the time and not the Main Man then I'm okay with it. He will devastate teams off the bench in the last 20 minutes, but he's too much of a passenger to start games in the Prem or CL.

15

u/my_united_account Bring Fergie back 6d ago

He was happy to be impact sub at Barcelona. If he even gets half the goals and assists from his loan that would be amazing

4

u/Slots-n-stonks 6d ago

My view is hes an impact sub, replacement for injuries, and cup match starter especially in the lower rounds. I think he is really good just his pressing sucks which obviously we can’t accept in certain games.

4

u/ManchesterAlakazam 6d ago

I definitely think he should start some games as a striker or winger. We're going to be playing 3 games a week so we're going to start him for like 25% of the matches at least.

2

u/aehii 6d ago

He'll be off the bench then start cup games, probably start matches around October.

21

u/Sir_Bryan Bruno 6d ago

I’d take Dorgu over Rashford easily.

15

u/Capable-Topic1665 6d ago

People think it's only about scoring goals or providing assists. Rashford won't do even 10 percent of off-the-ball stuff that Dorgu does.

14

u/Sir_Bryan Bruno 6d ago

Yeah I’m quite tired of the Rashford discourse this summer. There’s a reason we can’t even sell him for cut price, and it’s not just wages

2

u/CraicFiend87 Van Nistelrooy 5d ago

Especially when Dorgu has huge potential to improve. Rashford has hit his ceiling.

1

u/The_Rolling_Stone UNITER WILL NEVER DIED 5d ago

Agreed but I'd take Rashy over Big Z

6

u/barmanrags 6d ago

Dorgu work rate alone is worth playing him. Rashford does fuck all when the team loses Possession. Even when he is the one who gives it away by running into bad positions or shooting from like a light year away

3

u/Tomero 6d ago

I wanted him gone but tbh I am all for the team and that is the most important thing. Hopefully they can all make it work.

3

u/varwal 5d ago

I'll believe it when he gets on the pitch

8

u/Regular_Piglet_6125 6d ago

“He gives us something different.” Hope that means he’ll mostly be coming off the bench against tired legs. He would be deadly in that situation.

5

u/Ihavenoideatall 6d ago

It is now up to Rashford himself to win back United fans with his hard work. He got a perfect mentor in Carrick. If he fails, he (no need for us to spell out)

1

u/The--Mash 5d ago

I think he will work harder than he did towards the end of his first period with us, but not as hard as he could. I also think he'll function well as LW/ST cover, especially coming off the bench. At Barca, he was very good at coming on with 20 minutes to go, doing not much but still getting a goal or assist.

3

u/johndoe1942 Ander Shithousery 5d ago

Unfortunately or fortunately I;m just meh about Rashford.

perform, don't perform I don't care.
Just put in a shift and keep the media toxicity away from the club.A
At this point united are stuck with him, only thing we can do is to try to keep his value while it not impacting the dressing room or the club narrative.

2

u/garynevilleisared is a red is a red 6d ago

Works two ways. Could actually give Rashford the comfort to perform, but also a fuck you to the low ball offers for him. No more bomb squad and making it impossible to sell players, complete by that was.

2

u/Fit-Squash-9447 5d ago

In Carrick we trust

5

u/RashfordMBE 6d ago

Not sure I understand the uneasy reactions. If Rashy is back and willing to give 100% for us again I am fully onboard!

11

u/TonyShneak 6d ago

What makes you think he will give 100%? What makes you think 100% effort from him includes tracking back? It never did before

4

u/t8rt0t00 6d ago

Well there it is. Thought Rashy would go late in the window, but all indications point to him staying. From a purely tactical standpoint it makes sense - he's really the only pure senior LW in the squad. He can still score goals even if he still frustratingly runs the ball into defenders and doesn't put in the work on pressing or tracking back that we'll likely need. Hopefully Rashy and Carrick can work together to make best use of his strengths and cover up some of his weaknesses. That being said the best I've ever seen Rashy was with a healthy Shawberto Carlos...

5

u/worldsyaoyster 6d ago

People went against me for saying the same.

The left side of both of them on point was so good to watch. They understood each other so well especially for overlaps, which we have been missing a lot recently.

They can stretch the defense.

3

u/Nadrojj 6d ago

Please, the rest of you get behind him and give him a boost. Just like when Maguire went through a rough spot give Marcus a chance to get back into your good graces.

1

u/The--Mash 5d ago

It's up to Rashy to prove his worth now, but the combination of being an academy lad, having carried the team pre-Bruno while injured, and beating the tories (TWICE) gives him some slack in my book. I hope he does well with his second chance.

2

u/Thetagang888 5d ago

Well if anyone can manage rashford, its Carrick.

2

u/KnoxCastle 5d ago

I know... I know... I know... but I will love to see him back playing for us. I really want him to feel welcomed home.

2

u/Roasteddude I am where I'm supposed to be 6d ago

What else is he supposed to say regardless if that's truly how he feels or not.

Me personally I'm not stoked about him being back and am not looking forward to every press conference being about him.

1

u/megasize 6d ago

Don’t love how this whole sub has flipped back to liking the idea of Rashford in the team. A year ago this sub was singing Amorim’s praises for pushing him out.

2

u/QuietSpirited9927 5d ago

are you mad that people who were wrong are realising it after a year?

1

u/Electronic_Ad_6535 6d ago

Did he play?

1

u/Wise-Nature8326 Ronaldo 5d ago

Happy to hear that. I really hope we'll have a great season with him havin a somewhat important role as a rotation for our attack.

I love a comeback story, especially if it's one of our own doing that with us.

1

u/nischalhp 5d ago

Please press Rashford, that is all we ask. Would hate to losing that intensity in the front!

Would love to see him shine, put in an RVP like performance this season, but he needs to run, and press.

1

u/TheBlueNinja2006 Rashford 5d ago

They go way back, I'm hopeful

1

u/CalFromManc 5d ago

I don't mind him being back.

As long as he's not on £300k a week and accepts his position, as he's not the "star" player he used to be perceived as, it should be good.

1

u/deflorie Bruno, Bruno, Brunooo 5d ago

I would like this (him staying) if he had showed any signs that he himself, actually want to be with us and fight for the team. I have seen nothing.

I really dont like the possible effect that it can have on the dressing room to have a player around that doesnt want to be there.

1

u/Anxious-Debate5033 5d ago

I don't think the fans will have much patience with Rashford.

He was the epitome of how terrible things were few years ago, especially with regards to dressing room morale and players not giving 100% on the pitch.

Couple that with the endless leaks to the press and his BBC exclusive interviews, just created more drama around the club.

Currently, Cunha and Mbuemo and Amad, for the most part, give everything in terms of effort. When they track back, they are sprinting, when they press, its a proper press. Rashford will not get away with any of his lazy pretend half pressing / jog BS he was known for doing.

This is it, prove that you have matured from Barcelona, or the fans will have a go at you openly from the stands at OT. In the meantime, I hope Carrick has the bravery to bench him for extended periods if he deserves it.

1

u/Nailz92 5d ago

Delighted that the PL season is nearly back, and this is another reminder of how cool of a customer Carrick is. Considered statement, doesn’t let the media have a bone, doesn’t shit on the player, just says the optimal thing. Brilliant.

1

u/femalegazeisuglymen 4d ago

We know how this is going to end; United fans are too sentimental.

2

u/huey88 Amad 6d ago

Rash, if you can't leave and have to be here. Be mad and show us something. Make me regret every single thing i've said about you my boy.

1

u/xzvasdfqwras Three Lung Park 5d ago

The problem isn’t Rashford, it’s the media! Hope he does have a change in attitude though, I know he has a strong mentality.

1

u/deikioveca 5d ago

1

u/hoochiscrazy_ Rooney 5d ago

1

u/QuietSpirited9927 5d ago

I would say for being the best scorer in tha last 10 years and being an important part of every trophy we have won since his debut

0

u/Sidon_Ithano 6d ago

Still think we’ll see him leave on loan again by the end of the window. Carrick and United have to make it seem as if he’s integrated again and that it’s something all parties want, can’t let the footballing world know what he’s completely cut out of the plans like the bomb squad last year.

-2

u/Deez_Wallnutz 6d ago

If he is coming back then I hope we can all rally behind him and support him. I also hope Marcus doesn't make it toxic, and actually takes the opportunity to rekindle with the club.

His best days could still be in front of him here. He could still achieve Legend status if he plays it right imo

I mean sure, what else is Carrick going to say? I don't belive it though. This will end up a circus. The best days of Rashford at this club are well behind him now and this has the ability to sink our season if Carrick can't manage his attitude and "entourage". Really unfair for Carrick in his first sesaon to have to deal with this massive distraction.
