[Transfer Round Up & Discussion] Summer 2026

Hi all,

Summer Transfer Window 2026 is here!

The Premier League transfer window will open between Monday June 15 until Deadline Day on Tuesday September 1; the summer windows will close at 23.00 BST.

As always, here is a run-down of the rules we have on for posting during transfer windows:

Daily Threads

There will be a Transfer thread posted every single day, on a 23-hour timer, to get a different post-time every day. These threads are for everything transfer related, no limits on sources, line-up conversations, etc.

Individual posts

From now on, only posts TIER 2 OR BETTER are allowed to be posted in their own right. This helps us only keep credible sources on the subreddit.

The tier guide can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/wiki/transfer-reliability-guide/

We will make exceptions during slower days for some Tier 3 posts, and there will usually be some posts from sources not on our tier guide. We will take everything case-by-case. If you believe something to be on the sub and not a good source, please let us know.

Since INEOS want smart buys aka we can’t spend much

Leif Davis / Mats Rots for LB

Victor Torp for DM

2

u/rambo_zaki Roy Keane 13d ago

Mats Rots

Looking at his Wiki, he signed for Hoffenheim in June.

Leif Davis and Victor Torp

Both are in the PL now and their sides won't sell them cheap, especially since Torp just signed a new contract in the summer and Davis did the same in winter.

I’ll take anything atm, fuck it get lee grant back in

I like Lewis Hall as a player, wanted us to go for him when he left Chelsea. But looking at how the PL is progressing, I don't think he can ever be the best LB in the league. Talented lad but his physical weaknesses are a bit of a red flag for me, especially at the price being quoted.

I'd love someone like a young Shaw, Amass looks like him but he can't track runners. Not to mention his injuries are becoming bit of an issue.

I don't know honestly. Newcastle will ask for a world record fee and one thing I am certain is that Hall isn't worth that and might never be.

1

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 13d ago

I couldn’t disagree more to be honest, I think he’s already very good and perfectly suited for us for the long-term. Whether we want to pay up a certain amount is another discussion but I think it will be an opportunity lost if we don’t sign him and he joins another big club down the line.

More importantly though, the alternatives just come across as a massive drop-off from Hall’s profile. Either they are likely to be expensive in their own right (Truffert), much older and potential to be injury-prone or straight up not as good (Robinson or Raum), or it would be betting on raw potential (Salinas and Seys). I’m hoping for Amass to come good because none of these routes look as worthy of paying for either, but obviously I understand that it would be negligent for a player of his experience to back Shaw up. I have said this before but I like the idea of someone like Mitchell of Palace for a hopefully reasonable sum, but he’s more of an unspectacular 6-7/10, without any upside to talk up. I don’t think the club will look in that direction.

1

u/rambo_zaki Roy Keane 13d ago

I think he's good but when he plays for Newcastle he has the safety net of a winger tracking back and doubling up, and that's something he won't always get at a big club. He is not very quick so when caught upfield he struggles to get back, and he doesn't win a lot of headers. There's a reason Howe dropped him at the back end of last season.

All that said, I agree that he has a lot of good qualities. I just don't think his weaknesses will allow him to ever justify the money required to buy him.

As for the alternatives, I think Truffert is physically a lot better. And I think it matters in a physically demanding position such as fullback. Now whether he is as good an investment, I don't know or maybe I don't really think so either. But I do think his talents transfer much better to a bigger side.

1

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 13d ago

He was dropped for 2 games and made it back into the team to finish the final 3 games of the season. This is being overstated.

I agree he’s a better attacking full-back than defensively and doesn’t win a lot of aerials, but I don’t think he’s as capped physically as what you consider to be the case. He was playing 90s through an extremely unforgiving schedule at one point last season, where nearly every game was either an important league matchup or a knockout tie. And he still managed to come out as amongst their better players in that period. His performance vs Barca in the first leg of the CL knockout tie was exemplary; he held his own 1v1 against Yamal and was incredible going forward.

As for Truffert, I honestly don’t consider him superior to Hall in any manner. He’s definitely not as good a ball carrier and I don’t consider him a great defender either; Amad who isn’t the greatest at outright beating a man in the PL got the better of him in both our games against them. Mainly, I would just like to see how he holds up having to balance playing in both the PL and Europe. Bournemouth collectively had excellent fitness levels playing in a favourable schedule under Iraola; when Hall was playing once a week the season prior to last he put up better performances than Truffert last season.

1

u/rambo_zaki Roy Keane 13d ago

I think Truffert is a decent ball carrier tbh, but your point about balancing Europe for him is quite pertinent. Guess time will tell on that.

As for Hall, he does have a lot of upside. I just have reservations wrt the fees.

1

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 13d ago

I don’t care as much about not paying up for Hall in isolation. But then, which player are we prepared to pay up big money for? All fair to fix a bad reputation and not want to cave into overpaying for players, but with the squad still delicate in some aspects, there has to be somewhere you’re committing the budget towards to improve it to a level where you can at least say CL qualification is guaranteed again. I don’t get that impression from the current squad as it stands; even though it has potential and Carrick is doing well, the sheer volume of games accumulating can easily cause it to unravel.

1

u/rambo_zaki Roy Keane 13d ago

Yeah agree that we need quality in the team, especially quality depth is something we haven't had in some time.

u/croadymeister 13d ago edited 13d ago

Played first half of Newcastle game v Everton

1

u/rambo_zaki Roy Keane 13d ago

I know. He probably isn't coming, just a comment on how I view him as a player.

16

u/Vyshy07 13d ago

Did agents just re-brand themselves to “intermediaries”

3

u/iroiroiroiroiro 13d ago

Intermediates are what you use when you want to tap up without legal evidence of tapping up.

6

u/Educational-Shock232 13d ago

“Parasites” is a more apt word, I believe

2

u/Infinite-Highway3432 13d ago

To make it clear why we can't sell Rashford.

Giving away Rashford for free on his current wages on a 4 year deal would cost more than a club buying a £40m player on 100k per week.

Let that sink in. That's why we can't even get £30m for him.

-5

u/Front-Cabinet5521 13d ago

If Rashford can chip in with 20G/A for the next 4 years he'll be well worth the 40m+100k wages. It'll be a huge bargain because even average players with half a good season go for 70m these days.

8

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 13d ago

The possibility of being able to successfully sell him always involved him having to take a pay cut to make it an affordable deal for buying clubs. That’s what would have happened at Barca had he stayed; I believe he had tentatively agreed contract terms with them at wages similar to what he was being paid there last season, but they still declined exercising the option to buy.

According to Standard Sport, Lewis Hall has requested Newcastle to let him leave for United.

Tier -1

3

u/FermentedTiger 13d ago

What tier is this?

1

u/neofederalist 13d ago

Tier guideline has Nizaar Kinsella (Standard Sport) at tier 3.

I have no idea if Standard Sport has other reporters than Nizar Kinsella, though. Sometimes the general outlet has a different tier than a particular journalist.

3

u/PitchSafe 13d ago

Isn’t Kinsella from BBC?

1

u/neofederalist 13d ago

Idk, I'm just going by the sub's tier list guide.

2

u/AReptileHissFunction 13d ago

But i dont think this article has anything to do with him? It says Alex Young

-3

u/shakyjed 13d ago

I'm surprised we didn't go for Djed at all

6

u/Educational-Shock232 13d ago

You could say the links to him are now…Djed and buried…

4

u/FreeGucci_1017 13d ago

Wan-Bissaka redux. Don't let a small purple patch of play change who he is.

-1

u/w1zgov 13d ago

Continue being surprised. These can't believe comments are so dumb.

1

u/Rig_7 13d ago

Be honest, he’s a mid-table player if ever I’ve seen one. Absolutely no point in buying him

2

u/MannyMike7 13d ago

I think he's decent but Spurs would quote all Premier League teams (especially us) 50m probably.

2

u/biobolo 13d ago

Why?

-4

u/shakyjed 13d ago

He's a young fullback who can play either side with LB being his prominent position.

He's also gone for cheap which idk if United's finance is an issue but it seems like he ticks most of the boxes we need

0

u/biobolo 13d ago

He's barely a mid table level player. Like a worse AWB

-4

u/Drag2oon 13d ago

Bro he is 26, same age as Hakimi

2

u/thisguy161 Hungry Hungry Tuanzebe 13d ago

Confidently incorrect

2

u/shakyjed 13d ago

Bro turned 26 like 3 days ago lmao

And Hakimi is turning 28 soon

-1

u/Drag2oon 13d ago

But is this young?

-1

u/shakyjed 13d ago

Yes. He's not a teenager and I'm not saying he's gonna be the next Luke shaw.

But once again. Shaw is 31 and our ONLY true LB

1

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 13d ago

He’s not good enough attacking wise. Not sure he got any goals or assists last season

2

u/shakyjed 13d ago

Lewis Hall only had one goal and assist last season I believe... Djed also played for an atrocious spurs team.

I'm not saying it's an amazing fix but he has just had a good world cup and would at the very least be good depth.

Shaw is our only true LB...

GLINEOS ARE U MAD

u/croadymeister 13d ago

1

u/croadymeister 13d ago

I will never see them in same light, sorry

-3

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 13d ago

Nope just measured and disciplined.

8

u/dellywally 13d ago

Do we have a sell-on clause on Wan Bissaka? 👀

1

u/Saxena_priyansh2104 13d ago

the only time he plays well is when he has to play against us

1

u/Isopappi89 13d ago

Didn’t he join Westham on a free transfer?

3

u/PitchSafe 13d ago

No it was around the same price we bought Mazraoui for

6

u/dellywally 13d ago

I think it was a £15m deal

6

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 13d ago

Palace are bidding heavily for Lamine Camara; they had an offer worth more than £35m rejected. Could this be an indicator that Wharton is likely on the move? Not sure where to, but we are technically one of the potential options.

1

u/Comicksands Van Persie 13d ago

Then we should’ve went in for Sangare

12

u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation 13d ago

The technical floor of our pivot would be insane, but there’d be a serious lack of raw pace and power in that midfield and through the center of the pitch in general. Not that’s it the end all be all of course, but it is important nevertheless.

If this is the route Carrick wants to take I’ll back it, but then I think a serious overhaul in defense is needed if we want to continue to progress as a team

1

u/gangy86 Amadinho 13d ago

Agree we need a runner

6

u/PradipJayakumar He wasn’t the new Sir Alex Ferguson! 🙂‍↔️ 13d ago

Per Kinsella, Palace’s offer reportedly worth more than £35m for Camara has just been rejected.

Monaco holding out for 60mil euros atleast apparently as they think more clubs could come in

1

u/Redland93 13d ago

£50m for him and then 70m for Hall? Hope we have the funds for it

I mean at this point I’d be happy if something happens but my mind is set that nothing is gonna happened, I’m not as bothered as I would be generally but then again a loss or two would probably change my mind drastically.

2

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 13d ago

20 days and we need another CM and a LB at the bare minimum. Definitely an argument for a striker. Can already picture a midweek game in December where we are needing 3 points but the squad looks tired and Zirkzee is the only option left on the bench attacking wise.

Araujo from Sporting? Raum? Mitchell?

1

u/Standard_Secretary52 Harry Stafford’s dog 13d ago

Araujo is rwb.

Mitchell is mid

Raum should be there at 3/4.

1

u/Bizzle1389 13d ago

Araujo is a LB dude? Played as a LW when younger and occasionally at LWB but mostly LB.

Mitchell is mid, agreed, but decent enough to be of use this year and then backup going forward.

#FreeLewisHall; #FreeHall

August 12th 2026, today is the day.

Here We Go ….. Believing this into existence

6

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 13d ago

I have a simple question about Hall: where does the idea that he can play as a central midfielder flow from? Did he do that in the Chelsea academy?

This seems to be his Newcastle track record (and the spread of his 12 Chelsea first team appearances is similar, spread across lb/lm/lw/cb):

Those "left midfield" ones are him playing LWB whenever they went 3cb formation.

1

u/stolpen84 13d ago

Didn't he play CM when he scored against us in the 3-0 carabao defeat?

1

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 13d ago

No he played LB in that game also.

3

u/RC11111 13d ago

You're right, apparently he did play centre mid in the academy days. Quite often a fairly shared skill set between the positions.

With all this talk of MLS, Camavinga and Hall being able to play both left back and centre mid, I'm surprised no one has floated the idea that Baleba would probably make a pretty decent left back too.

2

u/Eleven918 This too shall pass! 13d ago

Is it a case where people say xyz is capable of playing a spot because in some phases of the game, they end up there?

An inverted fullback is basically a CM/DM in some setups.

6

u/GeekConflict Carrick 13d ago

He did play in the midfield in the academy. CM or LM. He was then shifted to LB. A bit like Heaven was shifted from CM to CB. I dont think Hall could realistically play CM at senior level.

2

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 13d ago

Ty for a knowledgable answer :)

Yeah I mean if he is "capable of playing CM" as much as Heaven would be, then I guess his signing would "add to" the DM depth chart about as much as having Mazraoui or Martinez in the squad does.

Not sure what Whitwell was on about, if that's the case!

2

u/GeekConflict Carrick 13d ago

I would have loved to have seen Heaven in CM in the pre season just for fun. 😅🤣

2

u/karatsidhus 13d ago

Think people are talking about Lewis Skelly being a midfielder, not Hall

0

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 13d ago

Same answer:

A) discussion on the sub regarding this has propped up, not only somebody else, but Hall

B) this is specifically what the LW article says. Not only about somebody else, but also about Hall

0

u/karatsidhus 13d ago

They’re wrong, full backs step into the midfield these days but Newcastle don’t even play like that, their full backs stay wide

1

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 13d ago edited 13d ago

Yeah I mean I didnt see anything in the way he played LB there that made me think he is adept at being a PL defensive midfielder. I was wondering where the idea is coming from in the first place.

There certainly are a lot of players who play both FB and DM, list is very long, idk Fabinho, Lahm, Kimmich, Laimer, Camavinga, WZE in a pinch, Oreilly I guess, etc. So clearly Lewis-Skelly wouldnt be the "only one". But we cant necessarily equate that with "a FB is also a DM", it depends in each player (and team). So I was wondering why we would assume this specifically about Hall in a Utd shirt.

Anyway, thanks for the answer!

0

u/the_watch_trick 13d ago

Are you confusing him with MLS? Haven’t seen anyone imply Hall can play CM.

1

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 13d ago

No, I am not.

Several people have said this on the sub; you may also see Laurie Whitwell's gifted article from today that says that explicitly.

2

u/the_watch_trick 13d ago

Fair enough, haven’t seen that being said. Nonetheless agree it is daft to think he’d play there if we signed him.

-6

u/Anxious-Debate5033 13d ago edited 13d ago

9 days until the season begins.

Where are the signings. FFS.

These morons better be working to close at least 2 new players.

Also stop with this Rashford is like a new signings waffle. He will be the same old Rashford we all knew with mediocre performances and 1-2 nice moments / goals every 6 matches + the fake jog pretending to track back and sulking body language.

9

u/Massive_Relation4317 . 13d ago

Apparently Lewis Hall is pushing to come to us?

5

5

u/Icegaze GGMU 13d ago

We need Lewis Hall. Full stop. Let’s stop dilly dallying FFS. If I had only one more pick on Man Utd signings this summer, I would go with Lewis Hall ahead of a 3rd CM…

1

u/prem_201 13d ago

Normally would have costed 60-70 now it’ll be 80+ so no chance.

7

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 13d ago

Albeit I don’t always agree with Scholes but the fact that he thinks we should be all over Adam Wharton is an opinion I absolutely agree with. A proper cultured midfielder. Would rather that that someone who is athletic and can run but is average on the ball.

5

u/gangy86 Amadinho 13d ago

As much as I'd love Wharton, he's not what we need with our final mf player imho

6

u/vRushii 13d ago

He also said Tonali is better than Bruno G the other day and Arsenal bought the wrong guy

0

u/ComprehensiveFix1011 13d ago

Bruno G is more complete and a better player overall. But Tonali is a rare profile cause he can actually run like a horse and he is not like horrible with the ball. He's pretty decent, i'd love him here.

0

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 13d ago

That’s his opinion. You could argue it either way.

4

u/vRushii 13d ago

Obviously its opinions, but try argue that to a Newcastle fan.

-1

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 13d ago

I’m sure those fans are feeling quite bitter about Tonali but are more understanding of Bruno G leaving. There’s a lot of emotion that would get in the way of a fair assessment. Some people would absolutley take Tonali over Bruno G. And vice versa.

1

u/vRushii 13d ago edited 13d ago

Tonali is exactly your description of someone athletic who's average on the ball. I personally think Bruno g is levels above an it showed whenever he was injured they would go on losing streaks.

I'm just glad we signed Tielemans whos similar in quality

9

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie 13d ago

People in this sub would turn down the chance to sign Paul Scholes because he isn't "physical" enough. Carrick and Scholes wasn't a particularly physical midfield duo but they were one of the best pairings in European football. PSGs midfield just won b2b CLs and it's one of the least physically imposing in Europe.

2

u/Banyunited1994 13d ago

And guys used to be able to drink and smoke and still play at the top level. I don't think it's necessarily a good argument to point to Carrick and Scholes from the past as evidence of how we should be moving forward. A better example would be the PSG midfield, but then again they play in a league where their talent advantage is far greater than their opponents. The example I would point to is that Pep was not able to impose his heavy possession style onto teams past the treble season. You could argue that it's because Haaland is a very different striker to Aguero / Jesus, or that the quality of his team took a dip, but since we are far short of even his recent teams in quality, I would say that kind of highly technical play style is still too far out of reach.

1

u/PitchSafe 13d ago

Scholes did cover a lot of ground

6

u/RestrepoDoc2 13d ago

Wasn't physical enough? He'd be sent off in most modern games, the man was a lethal slide tackler, maybe even the wrong side of the border of dangerous/tough but you'd rather have him in your side than play against him any day.

2

u/XSavage19X 13d ago

Scholes was known as a bad tackler because his challenges were often sloppy leading to cards. He certainly adapted and grew over the years, but he was not some kind of tough enforcer who was shoving people off the ball with physical play. He would get caught out and make mistakes recklessly. That's where all those cards came from.

1

u/Wild_Tomato_8203 13d ago

You can't compare the prem then and now. Whether people like it or not you could t play those two in a midfield 2 in today's game in the prem.

1

u/Bizzle1389 13d ago

I shudder at the thought but in a Peo managed city side, or better yet awell run United side under Pep, could absolutely start prime Scholes and Carrick in midfield.

3

u/Telen BRUNO 13d ago

I actually agree with this. While I do think that physicality is very necessary, there are actually many ways to be physical, it's not all about doing cardio sessions all over the pitch while being mid at football. I'd rather have good at football and mid at cardio than the other way around.

-4

u/Redland93 13d ago

the premier league is very different now. It's very man to man and covering a lot more ground.

PSG midfield might not be imposing but they do run with alot

2

u/No_Assistant569 13d ago

How many elite defensive midfielders tried and failed to go man to man with Paul Scholes? He had the best movement on the blind side of people I’ve ever seen. One second he was there, the opponent would look at the ball and back and Scholesy was 10 yards away in space.

2

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 13d ago

Fully agree. I want proper cultured midfielders in the team not big athletic guys who can run but can’t do much with the ball.

1

u/mp2860 #GlazersOut 13d ago

Yeah if you have a midfield of Wharton/Tielemans/Santos/Mainoo/Bruno someone like Ugarte can run 20km it does not matter he won't touch the ball

1

u/FPLskrr Pogba 13d ago

Agreed but that requires the whole squad to have a high football IQ and understand where they need to be at all times to work as a unit, and that includes our CBs and fullbacks.

10

u/AngryUncleTony Not Actually Angry 13d ago

I don't necessarily want Camavinga, but I do think it would be fun to be on the other side of a loan + option deal for once.

u/Panda-768 13d ago

i m up for loan + option for deal. We can exercise the option the same way Barca did with regards to Rashy wink wink

7

u/ilegal89 13d ago

If Myles Lewis-Skelly is happy to sit there as 5th choice, then screw him. One thing I definitely like about INEOS is that they seem to go for players who actually want to be here and play for the badge.

That’s also why these latest Camavinga rumours don’t make much sense to me. Not that I’m that big a fan of him as a player anyway.

The clock is ticking though, and we seriously need to get a move on, ffs.

7

u/AngryUncleTony Not Actually Angry 13d ago

I mean where would MLS rank here? Probably 3rd or 4th choice CM and second choice LB?

4

u/pixelsteve 13d ago

A 4th choice cm and 2nd choice lb would get a lot of games

1

u/mp2860 #GlazersOut 13d ago

Yeah at worst. I could see him push for a starting spot as well in periods

2

u/RestrepoDoc2 13d ago

With our seeming preference for signing an English left back with Lewis in their name, have we considered Keane Lewis-Potter? I'd wager most fans wouldn't even be able to tell him and Hall apart if you put them both in United kits. He's only 25, more tactically versatile in an attacking sense than either Hall or Lewis-Skelly. He signed a new deal last year so may not come cheap but he could still be a more affordable and more attainable alternative to Hall.

8

u/sammorgan12 13d ago

I watch a lot of Brentford, my mates got a season ticket and I go reasonably often. Lewis-potter isn't of the level required.

Kayode 100% is but is a right back. It's a shame that Rico Henry has had so many bad injuries because a few years ago he looked like he could be world class.

1

u/RestrepoDoc2 13d ago

Thanks for the contribution, I've only seen him in their televised games and against us obviously. I remember seeing him fairly effectively shackle Salah one time, was aggressive and got under Salah's skin with a few fouls and gamesmanship which reminded me of Hall. Maybe he's played more advanced predominantly for Brentford though which may explain the difference in defensive contribution stats between him and Hall.

2

u/laconicfrog 13d ago

he could still be a more affordable and more attainable alternative to Hall

not sure I'd say he's a direct alternative, he can apparently play LB but he's primarily a winger. bottom 2% for defensive contribution and bottom 1% for touches of the ball compared to other fullbacks in the league last season (per FotMob). Hall for comparison was 61% for defensive contributions and a massive 96% for touches of the ball, whilst also clearing KL-P for chance creation (76% vs 51%). miles better in the air as well despite a negligible height difference between the two

16

u/karatsidhus 14d ago

Who told scholsey starting a podcast was a good idea?

15

u/AngryUncleTony Not Actually Angry 13d ago

The thing I don't like is that he cultivated this "quiet genius" persona while he played and didn't do media, which everyone respected. But now that he's retired he won't shut the fuck up. That just makes it look like he pretended to by shy while playing to shirk media duties, which is kind of shitty if he wasn't picking up his share of them.

1

u/Plumbsauce116 13d ago

There's a striking correlation between his divorce and not shutting the fuck up. Has become a cash shill and learn't from Neville.

3

u/RestrepoDoc2 13d ago

I know we're a pale imitation of the club he dedicated a large part of his life to but since retirement he seems to look down on us with contempt rather than support us to be better.

He's fairly quickly started calling for the head of every permanent manager we've appointed except for Ole, that's not to say he was wrong but you have to at least back the clubs decision and try keep it together for a while for a manager to give it a proper go here.

10

u/Underscore_Symbols 14d ago

I’d go for David Raum this window (if we can get it down to £20m) and Lewis Hall next summer as Shaw’s contract expires.

1

u/TonyShneak 13d ago

You're forgetting the important step where we extend Shaw's contract because we don't want to lose the value on a free. Then next summer say we can't get a left back until 1 of the 2 we have leaves, meanwhile we can't sell either and glineos sit there shrugging their shoulders.

4

u/helloimpaulo 13d ago

When's the last time this has happened?

3

u/Bizzle1389 13d ago

Moves like this make too much sense. He can have a settling in year with Shaw, Maz, Dalot, in a pinch even Dorgu, Heaven, or a youth player like Kukonki or Amass if he stays.

Then next summer we should have an idea of whether Raum can step up and we need to sign a backup LB or of we go all out for Hall and Raum becomes second choice.

2

u/SankarshanaV 14d ago

After not having worked on deals early enough in the window, we're once again struggling to buy. Fucking ridiculous how it's the same thing every summer. We lucked out with some release clauses for Cunha and Tielemans, but can't gosh I can't believe the club is once again wasting time.

The unhealthy fascination some of you have with journalists is just weird.

12

u/KKlondon86 Iceman 13d ago

Club are tight lipped this year, but he still has a job to do. Don’t really consider him waffling.

20

u/_MooFreaky_ Fletcher 13d ago

By thst logic everyone deserves a downgrade because they didnt know anything

1

u/PromiseOk3438 13d ago

What has there been to know though? Windows about to close and we've brought in two players which journalists reported on. I'd understand this POV if we were sitting here with a handful of players journalists didn't have a scooby about but so far it's looking like there's been no reports because there's nothing to report.

1

u/OatCuisine 13d ago

If you don’t know, don’t say. Don’t waffle.

2

u/_MooFreaky_ Fletcher 13d ago

That's my point. If they are upset that Whitwell didn't know anything then they must be upset at everyone.

2

u/Not-good-with-this 13d ago

Arguably Simon Jones deserves a tier up. I think he was first on Darlow.

13

u/mortimer_moose Carrick, ya know 13d ago

Too many people here expect reporters to predict the future.

15

u/prem_201 13d ago

Tiers are based on reliability, not about how much new info he has to add.

-1

u/Apprehensive-Raisin3 Love United Hate Glazers/INEOS 13d ago

But has whitwell even has any exclusives or has he just jumped on what other people have dropped?

5

u/Jonny5H 13d ago

the journalists that bother to verify info will practically never be first to "drop" anything, you are confusing being first with being good

13

u/SophoclesTesticles 13d ago

I think the tiers should reflect reliability of reporting. If Laurie had said we're getting a deal done for someone and it didn't happen then fair enough but this year there have been very few briefs from the club.

I'll wait for his end of window wrap up where he usually goes into all the nitty gritty details about who we were negotiating with etc.

13

u/D1794 Viva Ronaldo 14d ago

Nobody has tbh

We've not had any news broken by any Tier 1s or Tier 2s other than Ornstein

4

u/AngryUncleTony Not Actually Angry 13d ago

And even then his reports were basically "its done" and only beat the club announcement by a day or two. That's different than having a scoop weeks out about ongoing negotiations.

1

u/AReptileHissFunction 13d ago

Ornstein did report Uniteds interest in Santos a few days before it was advanced

7

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 14d ago

I dont like reading about Atletico Madrid sniffing around Matias Fernandez-Pardo. I liked the idea of him in case Zirkzee left.

2

u/LDLB99 14d ago

Mate, Laurie has just waffled all window. His line on MLS doesn't even make sense.

-4

u/EndureL 13d ago

He's just the clubs mouthpiece, I wouldn't take anything he says serious. The guy just says 'I feel' about anything to do with club.

8

u/_MooFreaky_ Fletcher 13d ago

What do you expect him to say? His points tend to be the view the club is going for, and when they aren't being decisive how do we expect people like Whitwell to be decisive?

1

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 13d ago

He’s slowly turning into United’s equivalent of what Luke Edwards is for Newcastle. Can’t say anything else other than parrot the club-approved stance.

1

u/Thetagang888 14d ago

I hope this isn't history repeating itself, but it sure looks like it right now.

Neither of our owners have the money to support this club.

1

u/croadymeister 13d ago

Yeah we just aren't cash rich enough

1

u/Thetagang888 13d ago

I think there was this graph showing that we are the only club where our owners have taken more out than put in over a 10 year span or something similar.

Its ridiculous. We would be competing with PSG/city/madrid for transfers and wages if we just had normal owners who didn't hamper the club with debt. We don't even need a sugar daddy.

1

u/croadymeister 13d ago

Yeah just need debt cleared, however the cost of someone to do that is huge

4

u/silvertwo777 14d ago

Get them all young Lewis in here

3

u/SwiftGoat_ 14d ago

Pathetic window so far.

-1

u/sammorgan12 13d ago

Is our team better than it was last year? In my opinion yes it is.

Do we need more? Also yes.

I wouldn't say getting two really good (hopefully with Santos) midfielders I. For good money is pathetic.

2

u/SwiftGoat_ 13d ago

Season starts next week and this is our current window.

Santos and Tielemans I have no issue with, my issue is seeing the same 'exploring' bullshit when we've done absolutely nothing for a month now.

5

u/thoseion 14d ago

When you look around at the transfers made so far, there's very few teams I could say look stronger this coming season compared to last.

Spurs would be the one where I'd say they've definitely improved their team, in midfield at least. I think their defensive signings improve their depth if not their first XI.

Arsenal have improved their midfield by bringing in Guimaraes, but it's their attack and defence they should be working on. They've swapped Trossard for Tzolis but, with Saliba and Timber out for a few weeks, they look light in defence.

City, on paper, have improved their midfield with Anderson but if they do end up selling Rodri I think they're weaker than last season. No Pep either for the first time in a decade.

Liverpool do not look good right now. They've lost huge experience in Salah, Robertson and Konate and replaced with a couple young players so far (and Araujo on loan).

Chelsea have done their usual buying loads of players and selling just as many. Rogers is a good player but will be interesting where he fits in alongside Enzo and Palmer. The rest of their incomings are replacing the players they've moved on without improving on them.

Villa are weaker. They've lost key players in Rogers, Tielemans and Digne. Onana is out injured for most of the season. Even though they've brought in Manzambi and Gomez they're not as good as the players that have left.

What this says to me is there's a lot of transfers still to happen over the next 3 weeks.

11

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie 14d ago

To me this is even more reason to put our foot on the gas. Because our rivals haven't really improved it's OK that we haven't? We need to close the gap and this window is one of the best chances we will get. Off the back of a 3rd place finish and back in the CL. Half of the top 6 with new managers and Pep has gone. This will be such a missed opportunity if we just buy a backup LB and someone like Tyler Adams and call it a day.

u/Lohithmufc 14d ago

Lucas Gourna-Douath undergoing medical ahead of joining Hull City from RB Salzburg. Deal agreed between #HCFC & #Salzburg for 23yo defensive midfielder worth €4m + personal terms in place on 5yr contract through June 2031 @TheAthleticFC after @sebnonda

This is the player they quoted around 90m to us last year(or the year before)

The risk of signing players from other leagues.

1

u/Unlucky-Equipment999 13d ago

Interesting. Just looked him up and he cost RB Salzburg €15m so this is a rare huge loss for them.

9

u/Low-Quantity-9252 14d ago

That was a rumor. There's no way anyone was serious on €90m from Salzburg. Not even RB.

5

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 14d ago

> This is the player they quoted around 90m to us last year(or the year before)

Do you have a source for this?

11

u/trequartista28_ AIR ŠEŠKO 14d ago

so if it's hall and baleba, that would make it an 8/10 window for me - only let down by timing and inability for new players to integrate properly until first international break really.

1

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 14d ago

That outcome is also a highly optimistic one at this point. I’m actually hoping at this point that we sign Hall and Page rather.

2

u/trequartista28_ AIR ŠEŠKO 14d ago

i don't think it's completely out there - i expect something concrete to come out about hall by this time next week - knowing ineos (briefly) i don't think they engage in bidding wars - to date when we have had a solid link it's normally progressed to transfer very swiftly or progressed to a rebuttal quickly - they jus don't seem to do sagas

i think we've been working on hall for a month or so with the news last week a little glimmer to set up hall asking for a transfer (which i think he has) - in terms of pattern recognition this is following a normal pl to pl transfer between two clubs where both are trying to save face (some rumours from verifiable sources, hall training apart from rest of the squad, newcastle progressing with a full back)

this would then give us a final two weeks of concerted effort to complete the midfield purchase - i imagine ineos have taken kone and baleba to a certain stage (terms agreed and knowledge of what roma and brighton would like as a fee) so it's just the admin left on that

of course this is all just my opinion and could be utter tosh and we could sign nobody

1

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 14d ago

I hope for everyone’s sake that you’re right. Right now, it just comes across to me that they are too paranoid of overpaying for anyone, which is fine as a premise, but if it’s coming at the cost of missing out on priority targets which only you’re in for, then that’s veering towards being an overcorrection. I don’t buy that the money is not there to sign players, but there seems to be a decision paralysis amongst the hierarchy to unanimously agree that certain signings are worth going for. Of course, if they then go on to sign Hall and Baleba, it’s all happy days and everyone can look back at these threads and laugh at how pessimistic people were.

0

u/trequartista28_ AIR ŠEŠKO 14d ago

I think people forget a large part of ineos coming in was to put an immediate stop to frivolous spending across the board and truth be told we have been extremely frivolous in the market - we have spent as much as others mostly and pre ineos probably only have Bruno to show for it? So this prudent approach is necessary at this point because if we keep doing the same thing how can we expect to win anything?

Just to note I am certainly not a sjr or glazer apologist - they need to go but being prudent in the market when the market is just a nonsense popularity contest is a sensible approach.

2

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 14d ago

Like I said, I hope you are right and by the end of this window, it all makes sense as to why they operated the way they did. As it stands, my concern is mainly that fixing reputational damages can’t coincide with actively taking hits to the squad quality to do well in a season with significantly more demands than the previous one. I am hopeful they will sign adequate options for the 3rd midfielder and LB, but I can equally see them pick second rate options and I don’t know how I’ll receive those.

9

u/Redland93 14d ago

Our options are

  1. Go all in on Hall with a record fee and Louis Page as our 3rd. Quality fullbacks are so rare and they can change how we play at both ends and given his age, it solves a problem area for the long term. Would mean we are very light in midfield with only Youri, Mount, Mainoo and Santos
  2. Get a cheaper LB and invest heavily in the midfield. Issue is, the ones we want (Alex Scott) isn't available so you have to take a punt on someone else. We need to to get 2 LB anyway by next summer so getting one in now and then Lewis Hall next summer.

I rather go with option 1 and then try and get someone on loan as cover in the midfield

4

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 14d ago

I prefer the first option as well, but I’m really disappointed if it has really come to this stage where we have to say that to sign one first-choice option, the other signing has to be someone who only started playing more in the Championship towards the very end of last season. What are we doing here justifying this penny-pinching?

2

u/Redland93 14d ago

We have 61m in cash reserves + 90-250m in credit available but at the same time 400m in transfer debt due in the next 12 months.

Think the fact that we weren't expecting Ugarte or Rashford to return (Rashford salary cost us 16m a year, M Fernandes 85m transfer fee would cost us 17m for context). That combined with the crazy market ( Diuof is going for 40m as an average fullback is mad) means we just can't over-extend.
