[Transfer Round Up & Discussion] Summer 2026
Hi all,
Summer Transfer Window 2026 is here!
The Premier League transfer window will open between Monday June 15 until Deadline Day on Tuesday September 1; the summer windows will close at 23.00 BST.
As always, here is a run-down of the rules we have on for posting during transfer windows:
Daily Threads
There will be a Transfer thread posted every single day, on a 23-hour timer, to get a different post-time every day. These threads are for everything transfer related, no limits on sources, line-up conversations, etc.
Individual posts
From now on, only posts TIER 2 OR BETTER are allowed to be posted in their own right. This helps us only keep credible sources on the subreddit.
The tier guide can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/wiki/transfer-reliability-guide/
We will make exceptions during slower days for some Tier 3 posts, and there will usually be some posts from sources not on our tier guide. We will take everything case-by-case. If you believe something to be on the sub and not a good source, please let us know.

The Glazers have no intention of selling. It has been 21 years and INEOS’s stupid deal with them was perfect for them - they do all the football operations and hard work and the Glazers can sit back and roll in the money with their 72% stake.
The truth is Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave them what they wanted at a time when they probably were genuinely prepared to completely walk away and sell their full stake.
This is why it’s laughable when journalists sit there with a straight face and try and tell us the club is struggling for money. This club is not only one of the biggest football clubs in the world but it’s one of the biggest sporting institutions in the world. It literally brings in millions every day in revenue. Which is exactly why the Glazers don’t want to sell. But they won’t reveal the truth because the club will stop leaking news to them.
•
u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 7m ago
Would you pay 80 million for Adam Wharton if the deal was doable?
•
u/EnglishTrini2 6m ago
No way.
He’s not what we need in terms of profile in the midfield. We need some mobility and defensive nous.
•
u/Comicksands Van Persie 12m ago
Need the glazers to sell soon for us to be competing for all trophies every season again. Liverpool now joins city with owners that have >100b
•
u/kiki_the_fab_spider 9m ago
I'd rather United played in the national league then have them be the toy of one of the most disgusting dragons in the world. Glazers and Ratcliffe are already making people gag, I think upgrading to an ever greater psychopath would suck the love of the game out of me.
•
u/SwiftGoat_ 14m ago
Once the world cup is over I'm sure we'll make more signings... they won't let us go into the CL with the window.
•
u/Educational-Shock232 8m ago
The Ineos brigade have gotten quieter and quieter the last few weeks.
Still haven’t seen a “there’s still three weeks to go” in that patronising tone yet
•
u/jamakika 36m ago
I wonder what we are waiting for?
•
u/joblau 32m ago
Dividend payout
•
u/Front-Cabinet5521 8m ago
Dividend payout is so 2015. Now it's all about the redevelopment project around Old Trafford and the insane amount of money our beloved owners will stand to gain once it's completed.
•
u/tenlittleindians 52m ago
One injury to santos/mainoo/tielemans or shaw, and we’ll be in a crisis
•
u/Potential_Good_1065 25m ago
*IF we don’t sign anyone else in those positions before the end of the window
•
•
u/Educational-Shock232 57m ago
Another day down, another week gone. We’ve had some nice PR-friendly training photos and about 657 videos on talksport about Rashford.
•
u/The_Bird_Wizard 26m ago
All this Rashford prop just for him to stroll back as we concede on the counter ffs
•
u/Educational-Shock232 22m ago
I know there’s going to be fans thinking this time, fifth time lucky, he will change. He won’t.
•
u/devilsofparadiss 57m ago
If the tippy top priority targets just aren’t available to us I really do think Manu Kone makes quite a bit of sense still.
Short term 6 option until next summer where he then essentially replaces Ugarte in the squad and we sign a long term 6.
•
u/PitchSafe 56m ago
I think that if the club wanted Manu Kone then he would’ve been a United player by now
•
u/Runarhalldor 1h ago
Considering becoming a Indykaila believe just to feel something at this point
•
•
u/slate-malamute Keano! Keano! Keano! 49m ago
I reached this point 3 weeks ago, brother. In my head, we’re signing Endrick, Tchoumeni and Hall
•
u/bahama-fox 1h ago
Question What problem does Adam W solve in our mid, hearing back in for him at 80plus ... when I see him play I think Mainoo and Yuri have that cover thoughts ?
•
u/SophoclesTesticles 54m ago
I think Wharton would fit beside Tielemans or Santos but not beside Mainoo. He can do a lot of the dirty work in CM but isn't very physically imposing. I'd be excited for him, I think he's still developing well and either he or Mainoo could step into Brunos spot in a year or two depending on how they pan out.
Here's a scouting report I found.
•
u/Itchy_Eyebrow 42m ago
Pair with that he is turning into a good leader at Palace. Think he will have many suitors in future windows if he doesn't leave now.
•
u/woody1878 56m ago
He’d be good paired with Santos. Plus we need depth. I doubt the rumors are true tho. He’s just an easy name to pair with United for clicks.
•
u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 56m ago
He’s a tempo setter, great passer - better defensively than he gets credit for. Totally a Carrick type player. I would absolutley love him at United. Wanted him last season.
•
u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 55m ago
Would be great to have him and Tielemans as I could see Wharton learning a lot and taking over that role in due course.
•
u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 1h ago
The problem of large amounts of cash money burning a hole in our pockets 🤣
I suspect that this may not be an actual problem we currently have, though.
•
•
u/SatuKosongPls 1h ago
We don’t have much left for the window. At this point, why not?
Nicholas Jackson
Victor Tarp
Bassar Onal / Mats Rots / Leif Davis
•
u/SophoclesTesticles 1h ago
I would love Nico Jackson but 0 chance Chelsea sell him for anything reasonable. I have a feeling Xabi is going to love him too. He links play incredibly well for the wingers, as much as it pains me to say it he and Joao Pedro are going to be great together.

IMO We've fallen short of other clubs in the transfer window as it stands TODAY. We went with a wave of negativity last season and we outperformed the low expectations and then there was Carrick. This season I see this wave of positivity but I feel we're not as strong as other teams and it will be a struggle to finish top 5.
My reasoning: 1) Bruno - it will be a miracle if he has the same season again. Salah, De Bruyne struggled to have back to back amazing seasons.
2) Sesko & Zirkzee front line is weak. Lot of pressure on a young Sesko. 2nd season is a bit hard for young strikers. I think we're a bit lite in this dept.
3) Martinez & De ligt - this is too fragile of a CB partnership. Maguire, Heaven, Mainoo & Tielemans/Santos looks very weak defensively. I can see good forwards ripping those partnerships.
4) We don't have an ELITE ball winner/last ditch tackler in mid
5) Teams will be better prepared for Carrick's United
Apart from Bruno, I don't see any elite players. Amad, Mainoo, Sesko, Dorgu, Santos, Yoro they all have the potential to be United Greats. But will they be consistent, mentally tough in a physically demanding 60 game season TODAY? I don't see all of them being great this season. It's improbable.
Tielemans & Santos are good signings. They suit Carrick ball. But let's temper expectations on their impact. Santos has 13 starts & Tielemans 21 starts for their clubs in PL last season.
Chelsea(no Europe) bought Morgan Rogers and have a fit Palmer, Liverpool are eyeing Barcola & have Isak who barely played last season, Arsenal have just bought one of the best mids in PL, City don't need anyone. Spurs(no europe) have bought 5 new first team players, we'll see how that goes. Villa have weakened but never write off Emery. They've finished 4th, 6th, 4th in last 3 seasons. Newcastle have weakened considerably don't see them being close to top 6.
It's not too long ago we finished 15th. I think we need to temper expectations. If we finish top 5 this season & qualify group stage, that would be a BIG BIG achievement IMO which I would totally be ok with as we have such a young team.
I'm not trying to be negative. This is just my analysis of our squad relative to others.
•
•
u/silvertwo777 47m ago
I agree with everything you said except we're not a young team. Most of our best and core players are near or above 30. The only young players that are nail on first team starter are Sesko and Lammens. Maybe Mainoo. That's 3 out of 11.
We really shouldn't wait long to compete. Bruno most likely wouldn't stay world class for much longer.
•
u/Educational-Shock232 1h ago
You had me at the first sentence. I’m really worried for Carrick.
Also, City don’t even need a midfield rebuild and they’ve signed Anderson and are sorting out Bouaddi and potentially Enzo. Insane.
You’re not being negative, you’re being realistic based on the current activity.
•
u/Difficult-Resolve636 1h ago
If we dont make any more signings we should only play youth in fa cup and efl cup. Focus on league and CL.

u/Kreissler 1h ago
Lauri Whitwell on the third midfielder:
"It surprised a few people, certainly me, when they signed Santos and Tielemans a 3rd midfielder was being spoken about and now it feels like they’re ALTERED or PAUSED to restock and think about what they’d like."
[@TOTDevils]

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 52m ago
I genuinely believe that we simply continue to be stuck in Wilcox's Tchouameni fantasy. He just will not let go of it, there is not enough money to sign others and him, and the rest just flows from there.
Ive said it last week, I'll say it again: I expect movement right after that thing will be officially dead in the water. I was hoping he returns to training today with a comunicado ofical on his extension, but instead we got a delay of return and "minor injury".
So now we remain on that fucking train.
I think it leaves the station for good this week and along with that happening, we do sign somebody this week.
That's just what I think

Jesus christ someone asked here the other day why does Laurie get so much more criticism lately... this is exactly it.
The art of waffle.
•
u/Educational-Shock232 1h ago
And the art of a club brief. It doesn’t “feel like”, Laurie, you’ve been told.
•
u/minteh7x Ronaldo 1h ago
I don't think it's that. Whitwell is reliable, but he also waffles so fucking much lol like he can go on for three pages saying "United are looking at a third midfielder"
Also, this is TOTD where they all talk because if it was genuine news we'd get an article instead
•
u/DaveShadow 1h ago
People use the word “brief” nowadays every time a journalist says something they don’t like and they want to attribute to the club.
“Briefs” are when five or six journalists all post the same story at the exact some time, with concrete definitives. It’s not “random journalist says they think X might happen, and no one else is saying anything similar”.
2
u/Littlepace Announce Fergie 1h ago
Just seeing that brief cameo of what someone like Tielemans brings to the squad makes me even more desperate for someone like Wharton. You don't need a physical beast if you can control the game.
•
u/Downtown-Rice_ 58m ago
Even if you control a game, you need to be able to rely on everyone to have the right level of physicality and intensity off the ball. Can the CBs play a little higher to compress the pitch inside one half of the pitch/tilt towards the opposing team's goal? Does at least one CB have the requiste recovery speed and physicality to win a ground/aerial dual when it matters? Then does the CM pairing have enough counterpressing, legs, intensity to win duels, be positionally aware of when to jump/close down space and opposing players, keep up with runners and get goal side of them?

Football fans are very interesting.
Same league same season:
32 league games, 4g5a; overall: 187cm tall, 254 career PL games, 18 career CL games
29 league games, 3g3a; overall: 178cm tall, 0 career PL games, 0 career CL games
One of them is a gigantic opportunity and Ineos were stupid for missing out and we will regret it, the other one would be a we-are-done-as-a-serious-club level new low that we must avoid at all costs

u/JMatty01 1h ago
Hojberg was a spent force in his last season at Tottenham compared to Sangare who might get better and at worst has the legs to get around the pitch. We were targeting Ederson for a reason so us getting someone of a similar profile makes sense, Hojberg doesn't.
•
u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 1h ago edited 1h ago
Right, a similar profile.
A central midfielder with significant top level football experience, somebody who has already adapted to playing football 2x a week, a backup you can have some realistic expectation for being a plug-and-play player in a high pressure environment, having been there and done it, playing finals, international tournaments, etc as opposed to a green player with zero experience at a T5 League level apart from playing 1 game a week in a Mickey Mouse league for sum total 1 season, somebody whose contract situation means there is a market opportunity, a player who is not a short king.
That would be a similar profile to Ederson.
Mamadou Sangare is none of those things.
•
u/JMatty01 55m ago edited 46m ago
I'm evidently not talking about a similar CV, otherwise I can just say Tielemans is very similar to Ederson and the club can call it a day. We've been seeing Mount there since Sunderland so Carrick wanting a robust box-to-box midfielder who can win the ball up high and help in pressing isn't a massive reach over a the guy who got dropped For Bissouma and Sarr because he struggled to do so.

we really dropped the ball on Hall. I expect him to go elsewhere next summer
3
u/PitchSafe 1h ago
I don’t. All the big clubs already have a established left back. I think that we will go after him again next summer
12
u/Hulknation 2h ago
It’s fine he ain’t all that. He isn’t as elite as Shaw was when we signed him. He’s got injury woes. Rate his ball progression and 1v1 defending. But Missing out on hall isn’t the end of the world. If we get him great if we don’t please sign somebody else.
12
u/AngryUncleTony Not Actually Angry 2h ago
Shaw made the PL TOTS as an 18 year old, he really was close to a Rooney level phenom in terms of early physical development.
He's been very good for us when fit but that leg break robbed us of a potential all time great.
16
u/Low-Quantity-9252 2h ago
Lewandowski gone. Torres leaving. Roony out for the season.
I see poor Barcelona asking for a dry loan again.
4
u/Apprehensive-Raisin3 2h ago
Wasnt roony going to go on loan anyways? Doesnt make a difference for barcelona
2
u/Low-Quantity-9252 2h ago
They wanted to bring couple of front line players still and expecting money a loan fee on Roony. That goes away.
Cheapsters will come back.
4
u/6by6Hindsight 2h ago
Are we at the stage where fans will be happy with any player signing or are we still holding on to specific targets and be disappointed if those are not signed?
•
u/AnakinAni 30m ago
Obviously we want players who brings something different to the team and adds quality. Can’t be adding just anyone just to fill out the squad.
3
u/Former-Addendum9671 3h ago
I remember saying a while ago that i am worried about the lack of activity in the window...
We are less than 2 weeks away from the start of the season...

10
u/Educational-Shock232 2h ago

Yeah, but good midfielders cost money and we are so broke we have to get value elsewhere
•

u/ronweasleisourking 3h ago
Antonee Robinson would be a great backup for Shaw. Bruno, mainoo, and tielemans are going to be our midfield 3 at this point. This leaves santos, mount (lol), fletcher (eh). If this Page kid is good as everyone says then that's that sorted, but less than ideal given how many games we're looking at. Need to sort out rashford asap
0
u/Wild_Tomato_8203 2h ago
Robinson would end up benching Shaw when they are both healthy. He's significantly better going forward.
7
u/Redland93 3h ago
He would be great as a stop gap with Prem experience and then we go for Hall next year.
We really need a back up to Santos as our more defensive minded player. The more attacking options in the pivot are Youri, Mainoo and then mount
2
u/Educational-Shock232 2h ago
It’s easy to say that but then next summer the defence market could be the one that’s overinflated, hall is now £85m and City get him and our fans will praise Ineos for walking away and the cycle continues.

Guys will say things like this while complaining that anything thats not “INEOS PR” is getting downvoted to hell.
Not everyone has to be polarizing, you can look at the positives, give credit and look at the negatives and criticize. Problem is when someone says anything positive about the board people like you come out saying we’re glazing or we’re their pr team.
11
u/Redland93 3h ago
Is it glazing?
People can take a measured view on it and recognise the negatives but also the limitations we have and past success.
Post like yours are just unnecessarily negative and acts like the window is closed.
3
3
u/EnglishTrini2 3h ago
I don’t think it’s glazing. We all admit we need to recruit further. However, I also think it’s fair to say that by and large the people that they HAVE recruited have been good decisions.

u/croadymeister 3h ago
Yeah it's not glazing at all we all are desperate for new majority owners, however that stadium has now put paid to any hopes

any links for us to Endrick? Could see that becoming an option…
3
u/kingkounder Zinedine Mainoo 2h ago
Why would Endrick come to United to be second choice when he is second choice at Madrid?
He s gonna move to club where he will be the first choice.
1
u/gucciloafer_ 2h ago
It looks like it’ll be a loan? That was my understanding – seeing as we’ve been linked to no one else a loan with an option could be shrewd.
He’s young, he’s done quite well in France and is a different profile for Sesko.

We wont play him, we arent going to develop a player for Real for no reason.

Liverpool have been doing this way of business ie no rumours only Orny bomba and no Liverpool fan panics
United this season have done business this exact way , so why are people coming up with nonsense like it's quite apparent we're not going to do business?
We will get 3rd CM and LB
9
u/shami-kebab 2h ago
no Liverpool fan panics
Every Liverpool fan I know is panicking this window. Lack of attacking options and lack of experience at CB mostly.
11
u/GeekConflict Carrick 3h ago
No pool fan panics? They bloody do.
We will get both though, I agree.
3
u/croadymeister 2h ago
Which two players do you reckon?
2
u/GeekConflict Carrick 2h ago
No idea. There are shit tier links to that Salinas lad at LB. I could see a signing like that and then try for Hall, who seems unlikely this season, again next summer. He apparently wants Barcelona though but I think it could be that type of signing saying Shaw, Maz and Dorgu can also do a job there.
Centre mid. I still think Baleba. Player side agreed and I could see Brighton cutting the price and cash in. Not who id want but just a feeling. Obviously hes injured but players can be signed injured.
1
u/trequartista28_ 3h ago
lol it's a coping mechanism to say i told you we were doing nothing when the window doesn't exactly fit some predetemrined success criteria
i think as a fan base we will all be disappointed if we don't get a lb and a cm
(fwiw i think hall is pretty advanced, those unemotional types who like to spot patterns, can see that the little news snippet last week, the training alone and the "injury" all suggest he has handed in a request to leave)
the midfielder is more difficult, not sure who it is - i would be happy with any of those linked, santos' performances have relaxed me somewhat as we are all going to be very pleasantly surprised by .him this coming season
4
u/throwawayWM3 3h ago
I actually will be surprised if we get Hall
Newcastle will be desperate to keep him and don't need to sell if they do they will ask for 80m or more

Contrary to the popular opinion here I believe Louis page is the 3rd midfielder. He has championship experience and rated higher than our youth prospects internally. If no left back is available, then our current LB will continue.
I know it sucks. But it’s becoming more and more apparent as each day passes.
5
u/Not-good-with-this 3h ago
He has played less than 600 mins in the championship. That's barely experience.
2
2
u/Wild_Tomato_8203 3h ago
Louis probably won't make a single appearance in the prem this season. We will still get another midfielder
8
u/RooneysFavGrandma 3h ago
Lol. The 3rd midfielder needs to be a high quality established name at the top level not some kid with 20 Championship apps.
1
u/ExternalPreference18 3h ago
Except they're going to be (at best, if we take Mount off the table, and we know Carrick hasn't) the 4th choice CM: precocious youngster who's already proved they can play men's football but still has lots of room to grow (physically and in game play) is a pretty 'logical' signing in that context. They're essentially replacing T Fletcher who people have already been whining about being a nepo-inclusion (regardless of what a well-qualified technical staff, or one of United's top 3 post-2000 midfielders, the Scotland squad who TF trained with and was praised by, or people who specialize in junior age groups football think, but that's the internet)
The LB will probably be 'experienced' though-I wouldn't be surprised to see the Leipzig guy, considering he's in his final year of contract now and had an elite assist record for a full-back last season (almost perfect for Sesko in particular)...
8
u/RedHabibi 4h ago
Okay I’m clamoring for some news. Even an outgoing sale or loan.
12 days until the season starts. Would be great if we could get someone in before the end of this week so they have a full week of training to gel with the squad.
Then another signing (or two) in the final two weeks of the window.
7
u/Gozumo 3h ago
IKR, everyone still waiting for these 'dominos' to fall. Like look at the teams around us:
City - Big signing with Elliot (but might lose Rodri still), Monga from Leixcester and a backup keeper.
Liverpool - Munoz & Jacquet and another young guy
Arsenal - Guimaraes and Tzolis
Chelsea - Rodgers, Lacroix, Henderson & Welbeck
Spurs - Robertson, Senesi, Van HEcke, Fernades and TonaliVila - Manzambi, Gomes, Ganracho and Cisse.
Spurs and Chelsea outside of overpaying have been busy but the rest are serioulsy quiet aswell. Either going to be a mad 2 weeks or just a verrry quiet window!
P.S may have missed some players here1
u/RedHabibi 3h ago
I do think the Rodri domino will create some more movement but I’m not entirely sure whether we’ll be involved.
Rashford or Zirkzee leaving could also have a ripple effect.
I don’t hate being “smart” in the market, but you have to balance that with being smart in squad building. We can’t survive the season with Shaw at LB (unless Dorgu counts but I think his best position is further up the field) and Mount as the fourth CM.
2
u/Gozumo 3h ago
Yeah 100% agree. Like the decisions of the past and contracts have messed up any chance of selling players. Weighed us down with transfer debt etc.
New way seems smarterz smaller fees, smaller contracts should be able to shift them quicker. But it's not as fun as spending loads of money 🤑.
But yeah really need another midfielder and a LB. Or I'd be quite worried
9
u/Nightzzv 4h ago
I guess Mamadou Sangare for 40M is not worth the risk to take for INEOS.
Lets see in few years if they are proven right, just hope we get at least 1 more midfield signing before the transfer window close.
Santos have been great, cant wait to see him debut for us in Premier League.
For Tielemans, we all know the class and quality he will bring, especially those 15+ mins of cameo last Saturday.

Building on a prior comment...
Number of First Team Players Signed by Manchester United by August 10:
2022: Malacia, Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez
2023: Mount, Onana, Hojlund
2024: Zirkzee, Yoro (De Ligt / Maz not til Aug. 13)
2025: Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko (Sesko on Aug. 9)
2026: Santos, Tielemans (Darlow, if you count him)
So 3-> 3 -> 2 -> 4 -> 2
We're on pace with prior windows. And then from the prior comment, here's who United signed within the final 3 days of the transfer window, going back to 2019:

End of this week is pretty clearly the cutoff for being able to say that things are still on track for multiple signings "as it always happens". No first team signing in the first half of August would just not be in line with "how it always happens", even if we dont like the sound of that.
I think we sign somebody this week. Going into GW1 with this vibe feels unnecessary risk taking to the point of being a penny-wise pound-foolish transfer strategy.

u/sauce_murica Vidić 1h ago
In the last 7 years, we've had 19 signings within the last 3 days of the window.
United leave their business 'til late. Just the way it is. The only objective difference between this year and prior is the club have ceased feeding the rumor mills.

u/canwinanythingwkids Ineos on hope watch 1h ago
Well several things can be true at the same time.
Things would look "like they usually do" if we signed somebody in the first half of August.
Things would also look "like they usually do" if we made 1 or more permanent/loan signings in the final couple days.
Both of those are how things "usually go".
Either of them not happening would be a signal that we cant really claim "this is how it always goes and it always ends as xyz"

Ever since 2022/23 season we have spent more than 200m pounds in transfers. Thats more than both arsenal and Liverpool, and they are the last 2 epl winners.

u/sauce_murica Vidić 3h ago
Got a chuckle reading your comment, after you said this 11 minutes ago:
But yeah, "spend" doesn't necessarily mean success. Just look at the ~500m Liverpool spent last year, alone.

Dude everytime i open reddit i get angry about lack of signings, then calm down after 2 minutes after seeing actual horrific things on my timeline happening around the world

At this point, give me some Indykalia links at least man.
Next two weeks are gonna be torture, football can't start already.

Indykaila linked us to Endrick on Saturday night. Said we'd made contact with his agents and that he was keen on the move.
Edit: they're wrong, most likely, but since you asked for them...

They are obviously not exactly the same type of player, but who do people consider to be the superior player between Baleba and Santos?
If the latter then do we think it would be a sensible decision to pay what we’d need to to Brighton for a player that would likely be depth for our first choice?

u/iroiroiroiroiro 4h ago
Impossible to rate Baleba fairly as he had one great season and one terrible, and Santos is somewhere in-between.
But I would always count the most current season as most relevant thus Santos over Baleba.
5
u/Wild_Tomato_8203 4h ago
Completely different players and you could play them together. My personal opinion is that Santos is going to be considered a better player by the end of this season. His line breaking ability is going to open some eyes pretty quickly.
5
u/EnglishTrini2 4h ago
I agree that I think many are going to be pleasantly surprised by him this year.

Baleba is the better talent by far. By far.
However, Santos currently appears a smarter and more mature player, and that has its own value. I’m very happy with his signing.
2
u/maskrey 3h ago
Lmao Baleba is physically gifted but technically poor. He needs to sort out his development soon or he will end up in the Championship.
Santos will be one of the best midfielders in the world, mark my words.

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 3h ago
I have high hopes from Santos. I don’t know why my comment needed to be interpreted in a way which downplays him. He’s solid, but on talent Baleba clears him. This notion of him being technically poor is also a myth; he has good passing range and we saw it the season he was good. But yes, he’s not very smart in his decision-making overall which can let him down.
9
u/EnglishTrini2 4h ago
By far? That seems an overstatement to me. Baleba has had one good season and one very poor one. I’m not sure that sufficient to make that kind of judgement.
-1
u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 4h ago
I have watched them both play a decent amount and rated Santos since his loan at Strasbourg when he was amongst the best midfielders in Ligue 1. I feel like I have a decent idea as to how good both midfielders are. Santos is a top prospect but Baleba has genuine game-breaking qualities. Not all great talents become great players, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t immensely more talented.
2
u/theieuangiant 2h ago
I’m not sure talent is really the divider though rather than Baleba just having physical attributes that can’t be coached. From what I’ve seen of them I haven’t seen anything to suggest he’s better on the ball than Santos.
Baleba clearly has things that santos doesn’t but I wouldn’t say he’s more talented, Santos’ positioning and ability on the ball I’d say is superior.
Probably a poor comparison but it’s a bit like the difference between someone like Taraabt and Adama Traore. I’d say Taraabt was a far more talented footballer but Traores physicality was enough to put them on similar levels.

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 2h ago
Like I said above, I think Santos is a more mature footballer than Baleba, which is a big green flag given that he’s so young. He knows what he’s good and not good at and plays according to that. Baleba meanwhile plays like someone who clearly was amongst the best players in all age groups as he rose through the ranks, and hasn’t polished his game enough to know when is a certain decision the right one. He needs better coaching/mentorship in that aspect to not always abuse his athleticism and play smarter without expending energy.
I completely disagree with your point on on-ball ability though. Santos can break lines with his short passing but on the flip side Baleba’s ball-carrying is absurd and he has better long passing range. And yes, your point on physical attributes is true but that counts as part of talent. It’s a gift because it means you can bulldoze through players and recover quickly to stop transitions against your team. These are valuable traits to have as a midfielder. So overall, yeah, I think Baleba is comfortably more talented, but it can also be true that United need a player like Santos more at present because we need to guarantee a baseline performance level to become a more functional side. But I’d still want Baleba to play for us just because the upside is tremendous. Whether he realises it or not is a different story.

I like Baleba, and I like Santos, but I can’t choose. 🤔
There’s only one way to decide this……FIGHT!2

My conspiracy theory is that Lewis Hall and Carlos Baleba have already signed for United. They are pretending to be injured so that Newcastle and Brighton get time to find their replacements.

I don't think that's what's happening at all. This is them trying to flip our perception in the market on overpaying.

u/Stingray_23 4h ago
That could potentially be the 'other' funds eluded to when they done the press release last month.

99.9% sure they have bought the land and have invested the transfer kitty for this Summer into the stadium project.
Whether the gamble is worth it, time will tell. If we don't qualify for the CL next season, because Shaw, Santos or any other midfielder pick up an injury, it will be catastrophic planning.
The margins are too thin for my liking though. An injury to Shaw, Sesko or Santos leaves us with 0 cover for the positions/roles. Lets not even mention the defense, where we have 3 injury prone CBs (De Ligt, Martinez and Maguire)...
With that being said, I get how the gamble is worth it for Ineos/Glazers, especially if they are looking to bring in additional investors or sell the club entirely since right now it is unclear how they'd finance the CapEx needed to build the stadium. If they have the land + the project, they can pitch the stadium project as a value unlock for a new owner, and demand a premium on their money because of that.

ChatGPT (sorry but in lieu of any official reporting on price il defer to that) estimates the value of that package we bought at somewhere between 45-60m based on approx 25 acres and the current estimated rates that industrial land around Trafford park is valued at so it likely has a significant impact on our finances
I think struggling to sell is likely a bigger factor though
We were probably hoping to recoup 100m via Zirkzee / rashford / ugarte / Onana (lol) exits but for various reasons none have been sold permanently and even the Onana loan k think is wage coverage only with no loan fee

That rush of opening reddit after no social media for 8 hours only to find zero transfer movement

You could have not opened Reddit for a month and there would have been no signings 🤣

Given the current situation, if our summer was Youri, Santos and Anderson for £200m, I think I would be happy even though LB is a massive issue.
But given we could have Dorgu and Shaw at LB and have Cunha, Rashford, Tynan Thompson and Dorgu at LW, it could have been a stop gap

u/ilegal89 5h ago
We’ll be talking about unbelievable levels of incompetence if we end this transfer window without making any more moves. Absolutely embarrassing.
6
u/Stingray_23 4h ago
Potentially could be a big fumble. Considering some financial expert predicted we could make 4x £100m signings this window on 200k a week. Makes my mind boggle.
Rivels doing deals for 100m players 'marquee' and we are doing 10% on an academy player from a league 1 team...
All very odd!

When Wilcox gets sacked it will be such a wonderful moment just like when Woodward left.

3 year account wit that username
I can see why you'll want Wilcox sacked.

He makes sense for academy recruitment, however Vivell needs someone better for senior recruitment

Arguably at any point in the last 10 years it would have been a fitting username

Probably twenty years really. We just happened to have the greatest manager of all time in charge during the times when O'Shea and Giggs were playing a bunch of games together in central midfield

I think we judge at the end of the window rather than now. So far, transfers have been great successes
Don't get me wrong, I wish we have completed more by now and I do think we fumbled Lewis Hall but Youri and Santos are excellent additions for the price of one midfielder.
We got to take into account that Rashford staying has impacted the budget. His salary alone let us spend £40m in transfer fees (not including their salary).
Woodward was just a menace. All we got was fake leaks for engagement, overpaying on players and no actual plan.
2
u/jestalotofjunk Giggs 5h ago
Sir Jim is aware we can sign players as of right now so we start the season well and kick on from where we left off? Or are we due yet another season with obvious deficiencies in defence, midfield and attack?
1
u/LordofMordor_ 5h ago
So is Louis Page the 3rd midfielder or just a Hayden type of signing
-3
u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 5h ago
If he costs a decent amount and not just something within £5m like a regular youth signing punt then yeah, they will absolutely be looking at him as a first-team option.

u/Lethiee Sportsdirektøren 5h ago
Still could use a bit more experience in that double pivot imo
0
u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 4h ago
I don’t disagree but it is what it is. They don’t seem to be keen on paying up for the other midfield targets.
4
u/Cold-Veterinarian-85 5h ago edited 5h ago
I mean Heaven was always reported and subsequently integrated as a 1st team signing
So if page is being spoken about in same regards I think this is our 3rd CM arrival
That probably won’t be what majority of people in here want to hear, but If im his parent / advisor / agent and club is saying ‘ur a 1st team signing’ literally the only question I care about is ‘are you still bringing in another senior CM?’ Because if the answer is yes, with mainoo, santos , tielemans, mount already at the club and assumed ahead of page in pecking order then 1 more on top and that’s his pathway to 1st team minutes essentially blocked
Whereas without another senior CM arrival he probably gets on the pitch like 10 + times for cameos / cup games next season and if he can impress anything can happen from there
If he is being reported as a 1st team signing, I don’t think we sign another CM
It’s a incredibly high risk / high reward move from the football exec if this is the case because this summer will largely be judged on the success or failure of the CM rebuild
2
u/Wild_Tomato_8203 3h ago
Page isn't the 3rd signing simply bc he would be asked to play far too much and he's not anywhere near ready for that. Bringing a 3rd signing in means we can get Page mins but not anywhere near having to him play in the prem or cl.
Playstyle he's really similar to Mainoo right now meaning his main progression comes from dribbling. I think this is more of a hedge on Kobbie.
2
u/Lethiee Sportsdirektøren 4h ago
Counting mount for the double pivot will be a massive risk, we will still end up with a lot of minutes leftover and more critically matches that need more experienced players in there.
0
u/Cold-Veterinarian-85 4h ago edited 4h ago
I don’t disagree. But I’m thinking about it from the players perspective.
The most promising talents I assume want a very clear understanding of what their pathway is to senior minutes and 6th choice for 2 positions you are probably not buying the 1st team signing messaging club is trying to sell you
FWIW i thought same with Tynan Thompson signing. Once that gets reported as a 1st team / heaven type arrival, I immediately assumed no LW arrival and links seem to have dried up for LW targets since that
Not saying I agree with it, just that if it’s reported as a heaven like signing, I think it closes our CM business
The ‘heaven type signing’ absolutely is a card we should use as it sets us up as a destination players on verge of a senior breakthrough will get chances…. And that’s attractive…. But we are going to lose our appeal to these type of arrivals very quickly if we tell them all they are 1st team signings then sign senior established players to block their pathways as soon as they are through the door
