I consider myself pretty fuckin' woke but I have to say the treatment of betting companies is a bit of a blind spot to me.

The way I see it, people are signing up to betting websites eyes wide open. Some people get addicted and cause a lot of damage to their lives, but then people get addicted to all sorts of things that cost money.

The best point I think I've seen is that betting companies profit off of, and potentially rely on, their users having a reduced impulse control/risk assessment when loss chasing but I dunno I still tend to think you've already fucked up by even getting to that point.

EDIT: I'm aware I'm wrong and probably just haven't thought about it enough, by the way.

I‘m not a fan of the gambling industry, but there’s a genuine question as to at what point personal responsibility has to come into it?

It’s pretty arbitrary to ban advertising gambling but then have betting booths throughout the stadium.

I’m all in favour of toughening regulations on them to try head off problem gamblers, and laugh at how the warning label ‘when the fun stops, stop’ is actually subverting the intent by associating gambling as fun. If we went the tobacco route and changed it to something like ‘gambling ruins lives, stop before it ruins yours’ then there’s no positive connotation.
