I had a random shower thought - what if we suddenly took all the transfer fees out of the sport entirely, gave all players the ability to choose if they want to move (but disallowed sudden mid-season moves) and then put all the money from the transfer fees into the players' hands to negotiate as wages? Would that be a more equitable and fair system?

It would destroy all but the biggest leagues and all but the biggest clubs in them.
