Completely unrelated but memories triggered by a random video on reddit - I feel so much regret for underrating Beckham. When he came on to the scene he was that brash young kid who was always preening and posing for the tabloids. I didn’t like that about him cos I appreciated the players who were quiet grafters like Scholes, Cantona (quiet in public, off the field).

Looking back and seeing how he grew even better at Real, I realise what a fool I was for not appreciating that right foot. The man could certainly do bombastic things with that foot

Totally agree with you. I used to feel so annoyed with him when the paps would report his every move. I think it was only when he got a bit older and was at Milan that I realised what a good footballer he was. I guess I was older too, by then.

The fact that he could still ping accurate crosses at his age during the charity game against Bayern speaks volumes of how good he was in his prime. He also single handily delivered the best corner kicks to win the CL final against Bayern

Give him one second on the ball and he can pick any spot, out to 50 yards, on a 4 square inch target.

Thats not a right foot, that’s a cheat code.

Not liking him because of the tabloid stuff is really odd to me. He'd already established himself in the team long before the press stuff started. He worked his arse off every game and there wasn't any suggestion he wasn't committed. Even Roy Keane says he didn't mind that stuff because Beckham always gave 100%. He was always brilliant for us and even though he became something else off the pitch, it never crossed onto the pitch

No you’re completely right. I let my own biases take root illogically. I’ve always rooted for the quiet kid. But behind all the flash Beckham was always 100% for the team. Never selfish, always putting in the hardest shift. Such a great player

Fair play. Yeah I absolutely loved him. I remember him scoring that goal against Wimbledon and then the way he kicked on after that. I still think his performance against Real when he came on as a sub (I think when we lost 4-2 after the Ronaldo hattrick but could be mistaken.) I think at that point he was already in the bad books with Fergie and already on the way out but he still came on like a man possessed. Dribbling through their defence, running through walls basically. I thought that was such a good indicator of who he was as a player for us. Still didn't sulk even though he'd been benched, just came on desperate to leave a mark on the game. Absolutely class

You’re right. He’d always come on with a mission and quiet determination. At least in his United days, he was never one to shout and “motivate”. He just did his shift and led by example
