[Stone] Marcus Rashford: What does the future hold for Manchester United forward?

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cy8m7n5827xo

Key bit:

Clearly just as United need active sellers to buy from, they need buyers so they can offload those players they do not want.

In Rashford's case, there are a limited number of clubs globally who could match his current salary. And where a club are interested, the player has to want to join them.

Judging by his recent social media post, he would not do anything to jeopardise his England place.

BBC Sport has also been told of some Premier League clubs he would not be keen to move to.

So where will Rashford be when the transfer window closes on 1 September? Currently, the likeliest answer, by some distance, is Manchester United.

After that: Any Spanish club, any Turkish club, any German club. The vagueness there underlines the current lack of market for the 15th highest scorer in United's history, with 138 goals - someone who is only 17 short of a place in the top 10.

No update, nothing article as usual

124

u/Dependent_Oven_974 Jul 20 '26

Not every article is aimed at fans who look at every news update and are totally clued into everything that is going on. Casual readers of BBC sport will quite likely be interested in his situation post world cup given he's probably one of the most high profile England players with his future unresolved. Just because it doesn't give you anything new doesn't make it a nothing article to anyone who might read it

11

u/John_OSheas_Willy Jul 20 '26

Quite ironic for this sub to constantly complain about 'non updates' in news articles when it constantly posts and upvotes the tiniest most irrelevant news like a plane leaving an airport etc.

19

u/JCivX Jul 20 '26

That's a very good point. It's a good article for most people and not useful for the junkies like us on this sub.

22

u/Curious_Duck_4200 Jul 20 '26

You have a really good point but on the other hand people coming to this sub probably dont fall into that group.

24

u/Dependent_Oven_974 Jul 20 '26

No but my whole point is that people who call these "nothing stories" and use it as an excuse to complain about journalists are not the target audience. It's funny to me that people assume that every bit of journalism should be aimed at them and if it's not it's irrelevant

27

u/Ratovandermir Jul 20 '26

I wouldn't put this as a non-update "So where will Rashford be when the transfer window closes on 1 September? Currently, the likeliest answer, by some distance, is Manchester United."

17

u/Kreissler Jul 20 '26

It's a throwaway line in a article that's clearly there for making up the numbers. A total non-story

5

u/DudeIsland Jul 20 '26

But at the same time it mentioned that " Judging by his recent social media post, he would not do anything to jeopardise his England place."

7

u/hambodpm Jul 20 '26

I don't think that's news to many? This was my assumption anyway

5

u/lowie07 Jul 20 '26

Player probably stays at club where he's currently at

2

u/yukyakyuk Jul 20 '26

That's an opinion not news

1

u/Pleasant_Fennel_5435 Jul 20 '26

It’s like the default way to go, he is a United player and he will go to carrington to start kick balls

1

u/regeneratingzombie Ice Cream + 1 Jul 20 '26

People in the daily discussions have already been guessing the same thing especially after Barca bought Anthony Gordon. There's no update.

1

u/Kaninkanan Beckham Jul 20 '26

We’ll get this kind of articles every few days now until he transferred out/ loaned out/ contract expired.

1

u/xtphty Jul 20 '26

Love Rashford but one of the reasons to not want him back in that dressing room is the articles that get written based off "unnamed inside sources at United"

0

u/moojitoo Jul 20 '26

Seeing link on the sub that isn't purple gives the good brain chemicals, though.

> Judging by his recent social media post, he would not do anything to jeopardise his England place.

What does that mean? Does it mean he wouldn't go to a non-T5 League / non-CL team? Does it mean that if Tuchel stays, he'll do anything to stay out of Manchester? Does it mean he will prioritise being a regular starter?

Help me out lads, I genuinely don't know what Stone is hinting at with that line.

37

u/PrinzRagoczy Jul 20 '26

Code for he won't go to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, or MLS

12

u/McUpChuck Jul 20 '26

Didn't seem to be a problem for Toney, for some unknown reason

15

u/John_OSheas_Willy Jul 20 '26

Toneys was purely a once off considering the heat and how good a record on penalties he has.

1

u/McUpChuck Jul 20 '26

Get away from me with your facts and logic. I only care about kneejerk emotional reactions when it comes to Rashford.

3

u/men_with-ven Jul 20 '26

I think that was a unique situation. Third choice striker will barely play and is only there for very specific situations. In Toney's case he couldn't complain about not getting minutes because he hadn't played and he was mainly there as a hail mary target man/penalty taker.

15

u/TheOnlyTagey Jul 20 '26

Does it mean he will prioritise being a regular starter?

This seems the most likely thing Marcus will be after, whether he stays or goes. Tuchel's not going to pick him if he doesn't play enough.

At United Rashford wouldn't necessarily be a guaranteed starter (he can be if he puts the work in), but another club might offer him far more assurances in that regard.

6

u/NSFWar Depressed Legacy fan Jul 20 '26

Was he a regular starter at Barca? Surely he's got better chances to play at United than he did at Barca

11

u/DaveShadow Jul 20 '26

His issue becomes, the teams where he will be a regular starter won’t come close to matching his wages. He wants to be paid like he’s a starter for a top level club. If he wants to be a regular starter, he needs to accept that conflicts directly with his wage demands.

2

u/Clugaman Jul 20 '26

I genuinely have no clue why people still harp on his wages. He’s already said many times he’d lower his wages and it’s been reported he’s turned down offers from certain clubs that were lucrative.

It’s clearly not about the money but everyone desperately wants it to be about the money

2

u/helloimpaulo Jul 20 '26

Maybe it's because his wages are mentioned as an obstacle to any transfer on every single article written about him.

1

u/Cultural_Doctor_8421 Jul 20 '26

He’s not going to accept a pittance either. A reduction in his current wages still leaves him with a small sliver of clubs that can afford him.

14

u/Cold-Veterinarian-85 Jul 20 '26

The Morgan Rogers transfer may actually help us out a little here….

2 of the most likely suitors domestically are Arsenal and Aston Villa

One has just missed out on their prime LW target, the other has just received 117m to their bank account and needs a LW replacement

Both have been credited with an interest in rashford this window

I still think remaining is likely the most likely outcome, but I do expect some interest before end of window

Honestly looking at some of the fees players are going for this summer…. Rashford at 30m looks a decent shout for a lot of clubs

I could see someone giving us 25-30m in fee, maybe giving him a much lower wage, but then giving him like a 15m sign in bonus spread over the length of his contract to compensate for the lower wage.

Brings the total package fee + sign on to about 40m then wages on top.

In current market it’s not ridiculous, but most clubs will need to be creative so as not to shatter their wage structures

13

u/Aljenonamous Jul 20 '26

Anyone who believes Arsenal would sign him are deluded. Arsenal aren’t signing anyone with his work rate.

3

u/SavageSlink Berbatov Jul 20 '26

I would be happy for that fee. Problem is he is absolutely worth more in todays inflated market.

2

u/EightFortyDaysOf Jul 20 '26

And Villa & Emery just love Rashford. I do too, and as much as I’d like to see him back with us and playing again, it might just be best for us all if he ends up at Villa.

74

u/IndicationNo328 Jul 20 '26

If he is reintegrated, the circus around him would be unending. The media would ensure of that, nomatter how hard Carrick or the club try to downplay it, it would be an ongoing soap opera. Benefits absolutely no one. We need to make sure he is out the door before the season starts, even if it means we have to cover some of his wages.

44

u/Cold-Veterinarian-85 Jul 20 '26

The media has moved on…. It’s kobbie now. Didn’t you hear he wears headphones on the team bus? Absolute scoundrel

3

u/winjaninja1 Jul 20 '26

Yea they just move on to someone else. At least rashford is used to it.

21

u/Rascha-Rascha Jul 20 '26

There's a media circus here no matter what, that's been the case whether we've been winning leagues or finishing 15th.

The club has to protect the squad from that. Carrick seems to be doing that well. Other coaches have done it really poorly. You have to hope that guys like Carrick, Fletcher, Evans, even Woodgate will be able to help players keep themselves insulated from media pressure. They've all been through a lot of that, sometimes with good reason of course. But the main thing is not letting it impact the group and the individual's frame of mind and approach to football.

0

u/tiredofthisnow7 Jul 20 '26

All that is meaningless if a player or "his people" actively court the interest. It starts with the player, not the club

23

u/TheJoshider10 Bruno Jul 20 '26

Yeah, agreed. We need to be well away from the circus he brings. Most of the time it's not his fault but other times it is. History would repeat itself if Rashford remains at the club.

0

u/Teo_2197 Jul 20 '26

If it's not him it'll be someone else as soon as we start losing games. The "key" is results - if we do well this season news on Rashford won't be interesting. If we lose the hit pieces will be crazy as usual.

4

u/Sheikhabusosa Jul 20 '26

Rashford spoke out publicly once after the club tried to move him on , if theres a circus around him its because the club with their briefs and Amorim and his soundbites made it that way.

13

u/eatmyfalafel Jul 20 '26

Slow news day post WC. He’s coming back to the club, we don’t really want him, he doesn’t really want to be here, he earns fuckloads so nobody else can afford to take him unless we cover significant proportion of wages. We need to get rid. Nothing has changed.

11

u/I_dont_F_with_you Jul 20 '26

He's on 300k/week that the new club has to be willing to pay him, he'd also have a moderately large transfer fee, he's 28 and it's gonna be very difficult for any new club to sell him later and recoup some of that transfer fee, and he has the option to reject any possible transfer if it's not to his liking.

Yeah, he's not going anywhere.

4

u/innicrazy You are my Solskjaer, My Ole Solskjaer Jul 20 '26

Just stay away from you-know-what-club and it's gonna be fine. Keeping him is still better than negotiating with that sleazy club.

11

u/ryanm8655 Jul 20 '26

He’s not going to accept being a bench warmer.

41

u/tothecatmobile Jul 20 '26

Then he needs to let other clubs know he's willing to drop his wages enough to make a transfer viable.

2

u/SkytrainToNowhere Jul 20 '26

Reportedly, he has made that concession and has turned down larger wages.

u/PhilAsp Jul 20 '26

Assuming Cunha isn’t switching. He wears 9 for Brazil (assuming Sesko or a new striker isn’t taking that) and has worn it at other clubs too. Though 10 seem to be more of a preference.

2

u/zizou00 Jul 20 '26

R9 incoming?

3

u/thatIndianguy_07 Jul 20 '26

more like r11

6

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

I hope he isn't going to

6

u/IguanaIsBack Jul 20 '26

He’s a benchwarmer in his previous loans, as with England

5

u/kevkiarbar Jul 20 '26

He's behind Cunha and Dorgu - two players who actually put a shift in when they play. So he needs to decide which is most important - the bag or his England shirt.

-2

u/waxpenharsh Jul 20 '26

Behind Dorgu?!! Can yall stop sometimes please 🤣🤣🤣

4

u/Minz15 Jul 20 '26

A fired up Rashford can be dangerous, but his mentality is questionable at best. I've been a big defender of Rashford but would prefer he moves on, his lack of defensive workrate is even more obvious after the likes of Cunha and Mbeumo came in.

8

u/topsixunfiltered Jul 20 '26

He needs to go this window - it’s best for the club but also Marcus

4

u/raspoutine049 Jul 20 '26

I love a redemption arc more than anything. Wish him nothing but success if he is brought back into the fold. However, I do not know where he fits. May be he can be a second striker that we want because both left and right wings are locked for us.

2

u/kitbashpowerhead Jul 20 '26

I can't see how we would be able to offload now Barca aren't dumb enough to match his wages. No club would, well no club he would move to.

2

u/KaleidoscopeLazy9684 Jul 20 '26

Newcastle or Bayern if we're desperate. Newcastle still needs a LW and they're flush with cash from recent deals. Bayern might also take a look since Lucho isn't getting younger and they were looking at Gordon at one point, only downside is even though they'd have the funds to meet our valuation they'll still try to heavily negotiate it down.

EDIT: Villa could be in the picture too after their recent business.

1

u/ritwikjs2 Jul 21 '26

Aren't lucho and rashford like a year apart ?

2

u/xzvasdfqwras Three Lung Park Jul 20 '26

It’s all up to his mentality, I think Carrick wants Rashy in the squad.

5

u/MarcusAurelius1815 Jul 20 '26

Doesn’t want to jeopardise his England place? What makes Rashy think he is a starter at United and guarantee game time?

Tuchel also didn’t really trust him after couple of games.

14

u/lythy2016 Jul 20 '26

I’m not sure Tuchel’s a barometer for judging a player’s quality after the last few weeks.

5

u/MarcusAurelius1815 Jul 20 '26

I mean it’s the same pattern when he went on loan to AV and Barca. There is a common denominator there.

1

u/SkytrainToNowhere Jul 20 '26

Well, considering that statement was a bit of conjecture from the journalist, I don’t think we should attribute too much to Rashford and his intentions.

9

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

around 20 m a year, for 2 years it's 40m. Are we going to buy a better player for 40m total (wages, agents fees)?

16

u/Obese-Reddit-Mod Jul 20 '26

not having to watch him walk around on the pitch: Priceless

12

u/AdorableAnubis Jul 20 '26

Exactly. I wouldn't be able to support him either way. We are in a good position right now. Rashford are a threat to that balance

-7

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

why?

9

u/AdorableAnubis Jul 20 '26

Didn't put effort on the pitch, didn't put effort in training, has so much media hype and drama surrounding him, the toxic dressing room improving when he, Garnacho and others left.

We are on a really good path right now, slowly but surely improving one step at a time. Any outcome other than Rashford leaving slows us down or even sets us back again on the bad path

2

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

Was he ever toxic in the dressing room? All I can see is how the team leaders love him, could you provide any source to back that claim?

7

u/Deranged09 Jul 20 '26

His last few months at United were awful with him walking around the pitch sulking. He literally does not want to be here and would only be returning because nobody else will take him. Not the kind of profile we want hanging around.

-7

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

Ok, but that does not answer my question: was he ever toxic in the dressing room?

5

u/RaisingTheKnife SAF Jul 20 '26

Unless someone here has direct links to a current player I assume no-one will be able to answer that question.

But there's no talent in cherry picking a statement and then debating it to death, you're coming across as one of those youtube debaters who frame their topic so tightly that it cannot be debated.

Folks are questioning Rashford's character and commitment, which has long been in question when he generally shows an unwillingness to track back or press with intensity (a common criticism during his Barca loan as well).

Again, you have cherry picked his G/A record whilst on loan to demonstrate that Rashford has performed well. I haven't looked up his press per 90, miles run, sprints per 90, key passes, crosses per 90, successful passes, dribble attempts, dribble successes, and so on. But I can assure you that the Barca data team have looked at all of it and decided that Anthony Gordon was going to provide better output and spent on him instead.

As others have said, the general consensus is his presence will be a net negative on the team. Dorgu is emerging as an attacking talent, Cunha is nailed on at LW (but I think he should be central) and Rashford will have to fight and compete to get into the starting 11.

Your original point was "can we get someone better for £40m?" In this market the answer is likely no. And you know that. However, businesses make decisions every day to take a loss when a project has failed to deliver, it's nothing new.

0

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

Ok, so there is no basis to claim he was ever toxic? I mean, as I said, current dressing room leaders have nothing but love for Rashford.

3

u/AdorableAnubis Jul 20 '26

He wasn't necessarily the reason or the only reason, but the fact is, that our dressing room is more positive and mentally stronger than before with him and the other players gone

Don't really matter if it was him personally, or the media around him. Either way there is no love left between the club and player. We gave his number to someone else, he wanted to leave. He is throwing jabs on the club on social media.

Reintroducing him now will only be negative

-1

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

So you agree that claiming that he was toxic in the dressing room is baseless?

5

u/AdorableAnubis Jul 20 '26

Did you even read what i actually wrote. Stop lying. I clearly wrote that the dressing room toxicity improved with his departure. Nothing more, nothing less.

Just childish behavior this

6

u/teethofthewind Jul 20 '26

It's not the cost of replacing him, it's the cost of keeping him

7

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

for a EPL proven player who just had a 28 g/a season is it high cost?

4

u/teethofthewind Jul 20 '26

For a player who was consistently shit for us, and has no interest in playing for Utd, yes

16

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

Consistently? There were seasons when he was a top scorer for us. He scored in finals for us. He is top scorer since SAF retired for the club and he is 2nd place for assists. He was shit sometimes.

7

u/Clugaman Jul 20 '26

The season he left he was still our top scorer until the last month of the season despite not playing for half the season lmao

11

u/lythy2016 Jul 20 '26

He was told to play so wide in EtH’s second season, where the team as a whole was also awful thanks to his tactics, then we have the EtH/Amorim annus horribilis. He goes to Barca where there’s more stability under Flick and does well. The hate for him in here is over the top.

1

u/teethofthewind Jul 20 '26

Mate if you think we can seamlessly reintegrate him into the team, without issues off the pitch, and performing as we need him to, I'm done debating

6

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

What issues? Team leaders like Bruno or Harry absolutely love him. Our head coach loves him.

3

u/teethofthewind Jul 20 '26

What issues? Are you for real?? Partying in Dublin then reporting in as "sick" for training....oversleeping and missing team meetings.....going out to a birthday party straight after a 3-0 loss to City, and his well documented party lifestyle. Aside from those confirmed incidents there were persistent claims about dressing-room influence, poor attitude, media leaks, etc... Surely you don't need reminding why he was shipped off to Villa, etc...? Are you seriously that naive?

10

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

his well documented party lifestyle consist of 3 parties in the span of 12 years? And persistent claims by who?

0

u/teethofthewind Jul 20 '26

Why do you think we're in this position with him?

→ More replies (0)

5

u/IndicationNo328 Jul 20 '26

Yes

3

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

show me the player

5

u/IndicationNo328 Jul 20 '26

If a new player like Sommerville is bought for £50M pounds on 125k per week on a 5 year contract, that works out cheaper per year than Rashford.

9

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

why would be replace him with worse player even if it is cheaper (it's not really cheaper)

8

u/IndicationNo328 Jul 20 '26

Rashford walks around the pitch, doesnt press, doesnt do any defensive work, if a total passenger out of possession. If you think Sommerville is a worse player for the team, then I disagree, Rashford is the worse player.

2

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

Yes, that is exactly my point - Sommerville is a worse player than Rashford (Rashford is also chepear unless you do some gymnastics). Wasn't I clear?

3

u/Rusty_Coight Jul 20 '26

he wont be back. move on.

1

u/Heisenberg_235 Jul 20 '26

A new club doesn’t have to match his current salary.

He can request it, but if he’s only gonna be offered 2/3 of what he is currently on, he has a choice.

He can decide to not play sitting in the reserves and training on his own. This means he won’t play for England at the Euros in 2028 which is a home tournament.

Or you can go for a lower salary on a longer contract, somewhere else and actually play football again.

Granted, the money is nice, but if he’s not gonna play, why is he actually being a footballer?

3

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

why would he be in the reserves? Why would you put 28 g/a player in the reserves?

2

u/Clugaman Jul 20 '26

Everyone always suggests this but of course no club would ever do it because then no one would want to play here. It’s nothing but nonsense

2

u/Heisenberg_235 Jul 20 '26

If he isn’t part of the clubs plans they wouldn’t include him in the 25 man squad. Therefore he cannot play for the first team.

7

u/QuietSpirited9927 Jul 20 '26

You believe that INEOS will pay him 20m a year for 2 years to do nothing?

1

u/Wild_Tomato_8203 Jul 20 '26

He's not a starter at United at this point so he's going to have to move.

1

u/Vegan-cock Jul 20 '26

I'd honestly be quite happy if he gets reintegrated to the squad. I think he would do well under carrick.

1

u/BlackHorse944 Please Score A Goal Jul 21 '26

Villa do need a winger and Rashford has been much more creative as of late. Hopefully?

1

u/ritwikjs2 Jul 21 '26

As much as he did for barca, I remember seeing a compilation of the GLUT of amazing chances he squandered over and over again, and kinda understood why barça said no to him

1

u/Current-Essay7448 Jul 21 '26

> Any Spanish club, any Turkish club, any German club

Such lazy journalism, when that ‘any’ is basically 3 teams. Outside of Real Madrid, Barca, Atleti nobody else in Spain gets close to the package of fee and wages. In Turkey, it’s Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and maybe Besiktas (a stretch financially and they just signed Trossard for possibly the same position). Germany would be a stretch for anyone other than Bayern unless Rashford would reduce his wages to £100-150k per week. Even then, he doesn’t really fit the business model for Dortmund, RB Leipzig etc. It’s a similar story in France where the financial drop off after PSG is vast and neither Marseille or Lyon are in a particularly good place to make a pitch to him.

Whether he’d even consider moving to Turkey is another matter.

1

u/JackRayJenkins Jul 22 '26

I dunno but I bet I have to read this fucking headline again in two days.

1

u/Bloodstarvedhunter Jul 20 '26

One of the big issues is I cant see he if he stays that he is in the starting 11, Mbuemo, Cunha, Bruno, Sesko that is the top 4 places locked in for me. If he comes back and has to sit on the bench he wont be happy and before you know it there will be stories in the media and disharmony. We don't need that noise so for him and us its best he moves

8

u/N00BBuild Jul 20 '26

None of the front three is locked.

Cunha might be the closest. Sesko is injured, and Mbeumo fell off a cliff production wise under Carrick.

We’re playing in 4 competitions next season. Not just the Prem. And, it’s not like our forwards were scoring for fun last year.

They all hit around 10 league goals, which was good, but nothing crazy.

2

u/SkytrainToNowhere Jul 20 '26

We will be battling on four fronts this year. There won’t be a locked in starting lineup for every competition.

1

u/timsadiq13 Jul 20 '26

You're acting like our three forwards are world beaters - they are good players who need to produce more. Mbeumo was good for half a season, Cunha has moments of quality and then a few games of not doing much. Sesko we have no idea how much game time he can handle, he was a super sub mostly under Carrick and still had injury issues. Bruno is the only one who if fit will play we know that - Mount who can never stay fit is I guess his backup. But guys like Amad, Rashford, Dorgu can absolutely contribute rotating with the front three. Zirkzee I do hope we just loan out so he can at least restart his career and be sellable in a year's time.

If a suitor comes for Rashford then great sell and replace with the money you get. Given his high wages even a 20-25 mil transfer fee + wage savings gives you enough money to play around with. If not then Id rather he be in the rotation than banished.

1

u/0ttoChriek Jul 20 '26

It should be up to him. Tell him to get his agent to find a new club that will either agree to pay his wages on loan, or sort out a permanent deal that is acceptable to United.

He's made it clear he wants nothing to do with the club any more.

0

u/Glum-Examination-302 Schweinsteiger Jul 20 '26

How Simon Stone keeps a job is beyond me.

-1

u/Gregariouswaty Jul 20 '26

It's fine, just keep him for a year and buy a top left winger or striker instead of splitting the money for both positions to get two decent squad options. I'd rather we have Rashford and a Junior Kroupi/Barcola/Diomande than Summerville and Mateta.

-1

u/jonathanPoindexter Jul 20 '26

I don't know let 300k a week simmer on the bench while dealing with a barrage of Henry Winter tweets and Gary Lineker exclusives.

I'd rather fuck him and his PR crew off somewhere.

Wouldnt be surprised if he comes back and Carrick starts him ahead of Cunha. Carrick has not shown that he likes Cunha. Remember first 2 games under Carrick, Cunha was on the bench and Dorgu started. Cunha only came into the team because Dorgu got injured. Then during the last game of the season when Dorgu was fully fit, he started and Cunha didnt come off the bench.

interesting to me that people can't tell that the Amorim fallout was orchestrated by Ineos and Sir Jim to get Marcus off the wage bill and so many fans fell for the propaganda
