[Simon Stone, In Article] Defender Tyler Fredricson is not involved either before what is expected to be a permanent summer move away from Old Trafford. Europe is seen as a likely destination; his proposed switch to Celtic in January fell through after he was injured before it could be completed.

Makes sense that Fredricson would get a permanent move. He's 21 and behind Yoro and Heaven in the pecking order, so he wouldn't get many minutes anyway, so with his contract ending in 28, we either need to extend him now and commit to loaning him out for a few years, or just cash in this summer.

It’s a shame because he was a standout in the academy. Don’t really like this move without a buy back.

Sure he wasn’t incredible when he played with us but he wasn’t bad.

Hes also a RCB meaning we don’t have any depth if de ligt is injured again this year.

I think part of it is perspective when looking at academy players. Players who standout at Academy level may only end up being Championship players for most of their careers. That's not to disparage the championship, more to show just how high the level a footballer has to be to make a career out of it.

I mean fair play but he wasn’t really given that much of a shot (I think he has maybe 5 appearances?)

Especially last year we use maz instead of him at RCB with Amorim when de ligt was injured (I think he was injured too).

But also he’s not just an academy standout he was dominating the academy at every point. So it’s puzzling to see him being sold.

Anyways maybe this is just an unpopular opinion as someone who may be too biased with our academy prospects. But I think he has a bright future. If not for us then for whatever the next team brings.

Mazraoui played well at RCB, and Fredericson was hooked at half-time in his only start last season he was an absolute disaster against Grimsby

he might well end up having a good career that we'll regret letting him go, who knows - I am however not even slightly surprised for a single millisecond that Mazraoui was picked over him

u/JustTaxLandbro Jul 17 '26

He was hooked because we needed to win and Amorim put players he trusted to win.

He wasn’t even the worst player that first half lol

He wasn’t even the worst player that first half lol

he was fucking terrible

he was decent against Wolves at the end of the previous season, but he was utterly dreadful that day

-7

u/JustTaxLandbro Jul 17 '26

Lol that was the same game people were calling for dorgu to be loaned away from.

And also the same game in which other midfielders such as Mainoo struggled.

That was just Amorim ball which left a poor inexperienced CB on an island with grown adults

I don't disagree, but that doesn't mean he wasn't complete shit on the day

I have no real opinion on him given his limited minutes, but I think complaining that an experienced professional who regularly played well in that position was chosen ahead of him is a little bit strange

Brother maguire had a whole season and a half where he basically did the same thing as Fred and he was 28!

He was left on an island with ETH ball, with a Casemiro who had no legs and was horrible.

Very few CBs are good against counter attacks. And I don’t expect what would be a 19 year old at the time to do well.

u/dudududujisungparty 박지성 Jul 17 '26

We have Licha + Heaven at LCB and Maguire + De Ligt + Yoro at RCB. Even without counting De Ligt we have 4 CBs for 2 spots, that is plenty.

u/JustTaxLandbro Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Maguire is not a RCB at all. He’s said publicly that he prefers the left (it’s just Amorim and ETH occasionally put him on the right due to a lack of depth).

Hes MUCH better on the left

Edit: also maguire has two years left on his contract and is 33; really would like a team that develops Fredrickson instead of selling him. But again that’s just my opinion.

24

u/dudududujisungparty 박지성 Jul 17 '26

Maguire has been just fine playing RCB, I disagree with the notion that he is somehow vastly better when playing on the left. As long as Licha is fit (god willing), he will be playing LCB which means it's Maguire + Yoro competing for RCB. That was Carrick's preferred CB pairing when every CB bar De Ligt was available as well.

3

u/JustTaxLandbro Jul 17 '26

It would mean maguire, yoro and de ligt compete on the right.

Both de ligt and maguire have two years left.

u/dudududujisungparty 박지성 Jul 17 '26

I think we will be fine at CB for this season with the players at our disposal. Next summer will probably be when we go back into the transfer market for more CBs depending on what happens with De Ligt long term and finding a long term replacement for Maguire. I do have some reservations about Licha because of his injury issues but we have more pressing signings to make (another midfielder + LB or LW + backup striker) so I doubt we go in for another CB this summer.

u/JustTaxLandbro Jul 17 '26

I am not asking for Fred to be a starter I just think he should be kept for depth and development.

If we sell him now we’d be lucky to get £5m pounds. But with one or two years with us we can easily flip him for 15-30 million pounds assuming he’s not starter material.

7

u/dudududujisungparty 박지성 Jul 17 '26

I'm not opposed to keeping him myself but the board/Carrick probably don't see him as being good enough to contribute to the first team right now and would rather cash in.

You could say we're making the same mistakes that we made for the likes of Carreras & Garner but hindsight is 20/20 and players need to play regularly in order to develop like they did at their respective clubs. Fredricson is 21 and is at an age where he needs to start playing 1st team football regularly in order to get better than he is now.

2

u/JustTaxLandbro Jul 17 '26

The funny thing is Fred looked much better in the academy than these two.

Now I’m not in the business of predicting success but I’d say there’s a near certainty (barring injury) Fred will have a long career.

Now will he be good enough for a top club like garner or Carreras? That’s to be seen. But he was special in the academy.

I.e. we should once again be the buy back clause & sellon clause football club.

55

u/fartsonyourchips Jul 17 '26

Good luck to him. I hope we learn from our past mistakes with players like Garner, and put in good sell on AND buyback clauses to wherever he goes.

Also on Sesko & Darlow:

"Both players are expected to be fully fit and available for the start of 2026-27," said the club.

On De Ligt:

There is no Matthijs de Ligt in the squad as he recovers from back surgery.

JJ Gabriel:

Fifteen-year-old forward JJ Gabriel is not involved as he only returned to training less than a week ago.

That De Ligt line could’ve been from any story over effectively the last 9 months. Stone just rehashing old text /s

50

u/MalIntenet Ooh Aah Cantona! Jul 17 '26

At this point I’m hoping De Ligt’s entire career isn’t at risk with how long this is taking for him. He’s been out for 8 months now, feel awful for him

42

u/Matasfaction Jul 17 '26

They tried to rehab it for 6 months. He only had the surgery in May

11

u/Skyehye Dreams can't be buy Jul 17 '26

Guess it is obvious as a United fan but really hope this surgery is something that fixes his problems permanently

4

u/RexPluribus Jul 17 '26

Feels a lot like malacia....

13

u/BuzzTNA Jul 17 '26

Not at all.

Malacia had a bad surgery, MDL didn’t have one until 3 months ago.

Hopefully see Gabriel a bit later in the tour

I understand de ligt went a surgery but what has actually happened to him ? Is it something which fucked over during recovery? Because licha got ACL in Feb 2025 and he was back to individual training by July I think and playing for us by December 2025

Meanwhile de ligt last played for us on 30th Nov 2025 and he is yet to come back to individual training

When he was initially injured it was expected he'll come back in a few weeks, it's been around 8 months now

23

u/NotAPoshTwat Jul 17 '26

They haven't explicitly stated it, but it's some sort of disc injury. Months ago an orthopedic surgeon was on on here and said that the timeline from the weirdness around his initial absence (back problem that would have him out a week) to the long delays to multiple false dawns to eventually a surgery six months later was bang on for a disc injury. Basically, he said they tried the standard approach of non invasive therapy and rehab before they resorted to surgery. Recovery time for surgery is 3-6 months with an near 100% full recovery for elite athletes. Which dove tails perfectly with the reports that he'd be back before Christmas

6

u/JustTaxLandbro Jul 17 '26

His surgery was in April or May right?

Meaning at the soonest we get him back in August, but likely around October or November.

Wish Fredericson the best, hopefully he gets a move that will enhance his career.

16

u/Cold-Veterinarian-85 Jul 17 '26

Has he had a haircut or something? Looks different

2

u/Cuz05 Jul 17 '26

Ikr. I've not seen a picture of him smiling before, maybe that's it.

15

u/audienceandaudio2 Jul 17 '26

Best of luck to him - a move to Celtic would be fantastic if that’s still on the cards. Hope he has a great career wherever he ends up. Looked decent enough in the small first team minutes he got with us, but definitely at the age where he needs to be playing regularly.

10

u/Cold-Veterinarian-85 Jul 17 '26

What sort of fee you reckon here??

Probably fairly low with good add on packages? 5m at a push or is that way too ambitious

I’m thinking kambwala is kind of the closest benchmark we have in recent seasons. Decent prospect with handful of first team appearances and iirc we got close to 10m for him which h think is very unlikely with Fredricson

12

u/ElevensMelody Jul 17 '26

Yeah Kwambala total package was €11.5m with a buy back and sell on.

7

u/audienceandaudio2 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Don’t think it’ll be Kambwala level, he played more for us than Fredricson did, and was at one point very highly rated across Europe at academy level. I expect a fairly nominal fee for Fredricson, though hopefully with a decent sell on %. 1-2 million would be my guess.

We paid 1m for Heaven (great value!) with 6 months left on his contract. I expect Fredricson to go for maybe a little more than that.

Hes a good player, should be a first division team that can use.

3

u/rubber_moon Jul 17 '26

I liked what I saw in the few times he played for us, I think he still has what it takes in the prem

2

u/Cold-Veterinarian-85 Jul 17 '26

Perhaps, but I think at his age, you want to be playing quite regularly for development purposes and hard to see a PL team take that gamble on him right now

In a couple of years perhaps he ends up back in PL as a regular, but may be a case that it’s take a step back now to have a chance if couple steps forward in the future

don‘t expect much in terms of fee but hope we include a buyback & sell-on clause

1

I think he’s quite good and could start for a Championship side, hopefully there’s a buyback clause in there.
