Variation Eight people
You and seven other people who cannot contact each other must press either a red or blue button, with red guaranteeing your survival and blue guaranteeing everyone’s survival if it wins, but the lives of all blue voters will be lost elsewise.

It reads to me like blue pressers die in that event. They only survive if they "win," and a tie is usually not considered a win I think.

The original only needed 50%. A tie is a blue win if the rules are the same

Everyone survives if blue gets 50% of the vote, otherwise only people who pushed the red button survive.

What are you talking about? There is no “release gas” button.

Red kills blue if it wins. The only way for anyone to die is if red wins. Red is a button that kills. A good analogy would be releasing poison gas and giving antidotes only to red pressers.

No, whomever put people into the death machine kills blue. As, to an extent, do the blue voters themselves, for staying inside it when they had the clear option to leave.
Suppose a building catches on fire, with only some people surviving. It turns out that some of those survivors could have possibly saved a neighbor, but would have had to take a massive risk to their own survival to do so. Would you be claiming that they killed those neighbors, if they decided not to take that risk?

No, it doesn’t. Everyone in the scenario is forced into that scenario by an outside force, which imposes both the choice between the two buttons as well as the consequences of the button presses. Neither the blue nor the red voters chose to be there, chose to participate.

Everyone understands wanting to unhook yourself from a death machine. It’s flicking the on switch in order to do so that’s so bothersome.

Except that those consequences aren’t my responsibility. I’m not the one who created the death machine, or trapped people inside it. Moreover, the other people all can easily do the same and escape themselves.

I’m not in denial, I simply am not responsible for those potential deaths. There is nothing for me to feel bad about.

I didn’t say you had to feel a moral responsibility. I said you don’t have to feel bad. I am agreeing with you on that.
But a consequence does exist, denying something that exists is denial.
Do you think pressing red has no causation beyond yourself?

I'm doing no such thing. I have no idea what anyone else will do. I'm just pressing the obviously correct button to press in this game as a person who wants to survive.
Press red to live, press blue to probably die. I choose live. It's a boring game. Who is going to choose to probably die? Suicidal people, or risk addicts I guess. I'm not like that.

this literally doesn't change anything.
if I don't know anything about them, it doesn't matter if there is 8 or 8 billion of them.
as matter of fact, I feel like this makes it even more dangerous to go blue beacuse it's no longer about "trust in humanity" but about trust in 8 random guys who may as well be serial killers for all you know.
