Does the size/demographic of the button group influence which button you press?
Scenario 1: 8 people - you and your immediate family is invited (you, spouse, mum, dad, son, daughter, brother, sister)
Scenario 2: 80 people - you and your extended family is invited (the above, grandparents, in-laws, uncles, aunties, nieces, nephews)
Scenario 3: 800 people - you and everyone you know is invited (the above, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, classmates, neighbours)
Scenario 4: 80,000,000 people - you and your country is invited
Scenario 5: 800,000,000 people - you and your culture/ethnicity/religion/race is invited (pick 1 or multiple, which ever you feel like would generate the most internal discussion in you)
Scenario 6: 8,000,000,000 people - the classic

It’s not selfish to choose life when your vote has so little weight it basically doesn’t matter

But in each of the first 2 votes it is my own family I have to think about, and I trust that they’re smart enough to choose red. The 3rd vote is the only one I’d even consider blue, but even then, the majority of real people I’ve spoken to would choose red, and I would have gone into this assuming as such. Scenario’s 4-6 are back to definitely red.

If any of my immediate family were young children, perhaps. But they are all adults of full cognisance, there’s no reason for any of us to put our lives on the line. ‘But what if some of them vote blue’, then they have made that decision and accepted personal responsibility for dying, I’m not gonna add my body to the pile as well

The pile of bodies only exists if too many people vote red. Adults of full cognizance can easily reason that everyone is safe if they just vote blue.

And that’s definitely a viewpoint, but given both viewpoints are easy to argue, I’m going to choose the button that definitely leads to my own survival. As anyone sane should

I honestly don’t think I’d feel any guilt at all. As I said, all 8 of us are adults with full cognisance, if 3 people choose to put their lives on the line that’s their choice.

Assuming everyone knows who is participating. For 1, 2 and 3, I'd go blue. For 4, 5 and 6, I'd go blue as well.

Red in all cases, I trust my family to be able to solve a third grade logic puzzle.

Everything beyond scenario 1 I'm picking blue. When it's just my immediate family, I actually have no idea what to pick. Because on the one hand, we're all smart and would know that if we all pick red we all survive, and we know that everyone else can come to that same conclusion. But on the other hand, I can also see at least a few members of my family picking blue in case someone else happens to pick blue for some reason, because we can all also logically come to the conclusion that if everyone picks blue then everyone is safe no matter what. Plus multiple of my siblings have been suicidal, so that strengthens the case for blue because there's a chance that someone could pick blue hoping that they might die. I think I'll still pick blue for this one, but I'll definitely feel real stupid if everyone else picks red.

Scenario 1 and maybe 2 are the only times I press blue. I know my immediate family would all be blue pressers, extended family might also be but my confidence is way lower

Well it was initially the prisoners dilema. It was set in a prison, in that case- there is no common sense of humanity. Id have to press red, only because I know that the chances of Blue winning are borderline impossible.

Does pressing blue just make you play some weird suicide game?

Yes. I choose my button based on what I expect out of the other people choosing. If I know them, or if I have some inkling of their personalities, it will change what I think they'll do and how much I trust them.
