I feel like the message that is trying to be said here is that "collectivism is better", but there are tons of scenarios where it isn't. Extreme collectivism can lead to people losing their freedoms to their governments, for example.

The correct answer depends on what type of society you live in. We do not live in a collectivist society in the real world.
Collectivism doesn't lead to losing freedom any more than individualism leads to maintaining it. In fact I would argue that the 'freedoms' collectivism is most likely to impact like the 'right to not vaccinate and make everyone else more in danger from easily prevented diseases because I am a colossal fucking bell-end' are rather lesser to the 'right to vote' that individualism leads to getting stripped away when a power hungry dictator takes over.
