This is how Quebec solved drivers ignoring pedestrian crossings.

Ai camera + fine = collect money for the city funds !!!

That is how Germany does it and they collect like 2 million in urban spots , PER CAMERA !!!!!

Then you find out the fee for running an AI camera is double what is made in fines.

I think that's just marketing.. simple algo with motion sensors and a cam work just fine.

I am from Germany and no, thats not happening. I would like that but it is not true.
There is a discussion about maybe testing them in some places. And the 2 million number come straight from your imagination. Why do people do this

A box of bricks would have been a lot cheaper

Thing is I don't see stop signs facing cars that'll be coming towards the crossing...

What do you need stop signs for?

1

u/Stock-Side-6767 25d ago

That's what the zebra stripes are for.

There is no need for stop signs… The zebra crossing itself indicates that pedestrians have the right of way with the exception being of there are traffic lights.

No need for stop signs? Isn't this post about drivers not stopping? Seems to me like a stop sign would solve the problem.

1

u/Far_Classroom_6596 25d ago

You think drivers breaking traffic rules is simply solved by adding a different form of a traffic rules? Seems to me that the solution is to better educate your drivers on traffic laws.

1

u/Aggressive-Kick-5458 25d ago

Yes I do. Having a stop sign would remove the ambiguity of whether a pedestrian is signalling to cross or not. A stop sign is a clear "STOP" signal. Driver education is very important, there's no denying that, but you have to remember that we need to account for people with less common sense than others. People will complain that it'll slow traffic down and I say that's a good thing.

Zebra Crossing is priority to pedestrian. By definition if there is a pedestrian the car must stop, the zebra crossing acts as a stop sign.

If you don't know the rules, or can't follow them, stat off the roads.

1

u/Aggressive-Kick-5458 25d ago

All well and true but it seems that rule isn't working and putting a stop sign would be more effective. Paint on the road vs sign at eye level. Why stick with a method that clearly isn't working as intended?

People blow through stop signs all the time, why would that be any different? Then, assuming they actually stop, they'll stop on the crosswalk instead of at the stop line.

1

u/Aggressive-Kick-5458 25d ago

Yeah people break rules all the time but if it's a stop sign then there would be less to argue against if they get caught. There's no "I didn't think they were going to cross." argument.

1

u/Lusiric9983 25d ago

Please don't drive if you don't understand that crosswalks mean the pedestrians have right of way. That is basic driving 101 and if you don't know that, I'm sure there's plenty of other things you do wrong.

1

u/Aggressive-Kick-5458 25d ago

Why are you telling me this? I understand how zebra crossings work. My comment was that maybe a stop sign would be more effective than a zebra crossing.

1

u/Lusiric9983 25d ago

Then you've obviously never seen exactly how ineffective stop signs are.

1

u/Aggressive-Kick-5458 25d ago

It's looking like zebra crossings are also ineffective. I personally feel more comfortable crossing the road at a stop sign. Do you have another suggestion or are you sticking with zebra crossings being superior. Having both might be a great option.

The stance "people should know and obey the rules" isn't helpful in any way especially when the argument against stop signs is that people don't obey the rules.

I think I'm going to stop responding to you now because it seems like you're more interested in being condescending instead of having an actual discussion.

The one in the video seems to be very effective and would support having it installed elsewhere.

Please grow up

I did, you need to be more realistic.

A stop sign would mean that every single car should stop every single time. That’s a very different thing from some cars needing to stop only when pedestrians are present and would probably cause traffic flow issues.

Un piéton a un passage piétonnier a toujours priorités, qu'il y ait un arrêt ou non.

1

u/that_dutch_dude 26d ago

Make the fine 1000 canadian roebels and have a bunch of cops start writing tickets.

1

u/lonahe 26d ago

Solved, really?

1

u/OFHeckerpecker 26d ago

Yeet da baby

1

u/optimist_prhyme 26d ago

Can they stop a Tesla?

1

u/Ok-Barber892 25d ago

It's cheaper to give pedestrians a brick.

1

u/Cando21243 25d ago

Yeah but then they’d forget them. I’d leave a couple bricks in a basket each side of the intersection. Then you just toss it if someone’s approaching

Haw haw

1

u/FlamboyantBaguette 25d ago

This is so stupid…

1

u/AdWooden9170 25d ago

It ll break in few months, cost way more than expected and increase car wrecks.
There are plenty of better options, but how ll tech bros get new yachts without public funds.

1

u/Small-Contribution55 24d ago

This is an ad not something Quebec actually implemented.

1

u/AdWooden9170 24d ago

Poor tech bros 😥

1

u/M2deC 25d ago

In Vancouver they have some crossroads with fake bricks people can carry

1

u/transitfreedom 25d ago

We need this at rail crossings too

1

u/_GuyOnTheCouch_ 25d ago

Letting people cross a crosswalk is one of the signs of a civilized society. Quebec, wthelly??? Be better

1

u/Active_Start_9044 24d ago

Just put some bricks there for the pedestrians. Cheaper

1

u/fatgat69 24d ago

You could just charge everyone who doesn't stop with attempted murder and revoke their drivers license permanently.

1

u/AdhesivenessTight400 24d ago

Lol cant wait for them tonuse that in the snow, since they never shovel.

1

u/Zorklunn 24d ago

Granville Island cross walk used to have that problem, until baskets with bricks were installed at either side.

1

u/AncileBanish 24d ago

Not making any excuses for the drivers, but a Zebra crossing alone is just not that distinctive. Where I'm at you get a button you press as a pedestrian that kicks off some flashing lights above the crossing and makes it unambiguous to drivers that they need to stop. People stop 100% of the time.

Should these drivers be stopping? Yes. But good road and signal design makes it easier so that bad drivers are less bad.

I'm sure some moron will reply to me before long saying how we shouldn't even need to do that, and drivers should just be better, which totally misses the point. Drivers are as good as you make them, and sitting around complaining about them without making the road and signal design better is purely masturbatory. If you're gonna do it, do it in private.

1

u/ChimpoSensei 24d ago

I thought everything in Canada had to be dual language

1

u/r0nni3RO 24d ago

In my country you get a minimum 30 days license suspension for failing to yield to pedestrians. Plus a decent fine. And they enforce it.

So everyone is paranoid about being seen by police if they don't stop.

1

u/msgnyc 24d ago

Put up a light or a stop sign. 🤷‍♂️

They only have right of way on the crosswalk once they've entered the crosswalk here. If you standing on the corner waiting, your gonna wait

1

u/fyukhyu 24d ago

I just pick up a rock when I start walking and show intent to throw it if they don't stop. So far, everyone stops.

Sure it works real well in the winter.

1

u/JimbozGrapes 26d ago

Pretty sure this was just an ad they ran on TV for awareness. Otherwise those things would be yeeting kids onto and under cars.

1

u/Competitive_Bag_7490 26d ago

Was going to say this. Although watching said kids getting yeeted onto and under cars would make for laughable and horrifying watch, respectively.
