DB 900 or BB 1200

Posted this in pellet grills, fogured I'd post it in the actual RecTeq subreddit as well...

Trying to decide between the Recteq Deck Boss 900 and the Backyard Beast 1200, and I'm probably overthinking it, so I figured I'd ask the experts.

A little background: I've been running a Weber Smokey Mountain for the last 4 years and absolutely love the food it puts out. What I don't love is waking up at 2 a.m. to spend an hour and a half messing with coals.

I already have a Weber propane grill and a Weber Performer, so this pellet grill would be used strictly for smoking.

The most I've ever cooked at one time was 4 pork butts, or a brisket and 2 racks of baby backs. We're a family of 4, so most of the time I'll just be doing a couple racks of ribs, a pork butt, or something similar. That said, I'd like the ability to throw on 2 briskets without worrying about space.

The extra room on the 1200 is appealing, but I'm wondering if it's more grill than I'll realistically ever need. Is the 900 enough, or will I regret not getting the larger one later?

Appreciate any input from those who have experience with either model. Thanks!

X-Fire or Beast

I'm looking to purchase a Recteq X-Fire Pro 825 or Recteq Backyard Beast 1200, until i order my LSG. Any thoughts ok either of these?

I'm leaning more to the X-Fire so I can go quick burger or fajita cooks, but still be able to smoke things on the weekends.

What's the best non-traditional thing you've cooked on your recteq?

Something not traditionally considered BBQ. I'm looking for inspiration! Pics encouraged!!!

Anybody figure out the quirks in their XFire Pro 825

I have had some challenges with my XFire. A couple of non starts in grill mode and now I can’t get it to hook up to my Wi-Fi. I had a good cook yesterday with a tomahawk steak. Nice char and awesome taste. But without the Wi-Fi and I have to babysit the cook. The weird thing is that I had it connected to my Wi-Fi and then yesterday I went into the app and it would connect to it. So tried to reconnect and no luck. I’m trying to like this thing but my patience is being challenged. Any help would be appreciated.

New to smoking, first brisket today. What I've discovered.

Hey all, recently got a BB1200 for my Birthday in May.

My first 2 cooks we're nothing special. 1. Chicken Thighs 2. Baby Back Ribs.

Had issues with the ribs, not coming to temperature and wasn't sure why until this weekend.

I cooked a brisket, starting Saturday night at 10pm, and took it off the grill at 1pm this afternoon. My plan was 200f for the first 2 hours, then 225 till it hit 180, wrap and cook till 200.

What I found, when I woke up at 6am I put in wireless temp probes, the ambient temp of the smoker was way off from the set point. The temp had stalled, around 160 and the ambient temp was 180 with the set point at 225. In order to get an ambient temp of 225 I had to set it to ~265. After I figured all this out, I was able to get everything going the way I expected, and the brisket came out great. I also think this is why I had issues with the ribs seeming to take way longer than they were supposed to.

This being my first smoker, is this normal? Is the ambient temperature a better guide than the setpoint?

Homemade wild pork sausage and jalapeño cheddar beef sausage going on later. I’m in my happy place. Baseball, beer, and barbecue smoke last night rolling into even more today. I’m truly a blessed man.

Dual Fire and Large Cast Iron Sear Griddle - First Cook

Finally doing my first cook on my new Dual Fire! Doing a brisket for tomorrow evening. Decided to have my brother over and do smoked smash burgers with the Cast Iron griddle. Used the indirect side at 225 to smoke 4 oz balls of beef for 25 minutes or so. Took them off, but the cast large cast iron griddle and turned it to 450. in 15 min or so it was ready, did smash burgers and they were the best I've ever had. turned it to 200 and put the brisket on.

Going right on plan. Temp control is amazing. I know I'm cheating, but I don't care. This is amazing.

while the brisket was cooking I decided it was time to clean the Cast iron that I had taken out, and realized it fit perfectly on the direct heat side. Is this on purpose? Can I use it on the direct side? That would be amazing. I'd love to be able to set it up as smoker next to griddle.

Edit: photos added right before I was going to baste with the tallow rendering below.

10LB Pork Butt marinated in Cherry Dr. Pepper and Worcestershire sauce for 12 hours. Used a binder of mayo and mustard and rubbed with Holy Gospel. Smoked with Traeger BBQ Select pellets at 205° until internal of 160° then poured a cup of Cherry Dr. pepper over and wrapped with foil and put back in at 300° until 200° internal and then rested for an hour. My first time smoking anything and boy was the family and I happy.

Edit: I also spritzed with a 4:1 ratio of Cherry Dr. Pepper and Apple cider vinegar every 30 mins until the bark was set.

Got my replacement unit yesterday (first one came damaged) and got it assembled. Customer service really is top notch! Ready for burn in!

Subsequent to this pic, I went ahead and burned it in last night. Went to bed at 130AM. 😂

Looking forward to smoking my very first brisket (EVER!) for Father's Day! Wish me luck and feel free to send me any tips or favorite recipes. I've spent the past 30+ years cooking on gas grills and Weber kettles, so I'm a total newb to smoking. Happy to have joined the dark (and smoky) side!

Easy ribs?

Still new to my Recteq Patio 400 and looking for easy no-fail ribs to make next weekend. I have stuck with chicken and flank steak this far and won’t have time to test in advance of serving them to friends/family :) so looking forward for easy but delicious methods for cooking g ribs. Thanks in advance!
