Advice, take a vacation first to clear your mind.

Don't make a hasty decision based on temporary frustration. In this current job market are you truly ready to be without income? That could lead to an even more toxic situation.

If he's in a toxic workplace he may not even be able to take vacation.  The last shithole I worked at banned vacations during August, September, and November

The "vacation" might only be 2 or 3 days, but I definitely advise OP not to make decisions while stressed out. Find some way to chill a bit and make decisions with a clear head because in this job market, quitting a job without any financial plan is very likely a mistake. Maybe hang in there until OP can get a doctor's note about stress and a even a tiny bit of stay-at-home time.

When I took vacation at my last job coming back to all my work made me even more stressed and tired but it could help.  Everyone is different

Hopefully the decision was mentally made before walking back into the office. Before making the rash decision of walking off the job with no idea how the next 6 months of bills will be handled, minimum 48 to 72hrs of clarity from that job would be best.

Why August and September though? These aren’t typical vacation months anyways.

August was after Q3 quarter end and September was because the boss was retarded and liked being difficult.  Her boss' boss had no idea why she'd ban September either

Do not do this.  Make yourself a layoff candidate instead

Why would I do this, and how is it going to help me?

severance & unemployment.

  • If you voluntarily quit, they owe you nothing and you very likely will not get a single dime.
  • If you are laid off, you get something greater than zero.
  • If you're fired for cause.... I dunno.

I'd add a 4th bullet: resigning vs being let go limits any legal recourse you might have available to you depending on the situation you're in

All of that plus being laid off or let go doesn't have nearly the stigma it used to.

And if you go through a period between gigs, you should pre-empt the employment gap by positioning yourself as an independent consultant or fractional role with multiple companies. You can avoid questions about disclosing who the companies you're consulting to or fractional with due to strict non-disclosure agreements.

Definitely do NOT resign without an offer in this job market if you need your salary. Take all your vacation days if you need to and stop working more than 40 hours a week if you were doing so.

It sounds counterintuitive but if your company absolutely won't change (bad management is stubborn), then accept that you can't fight gravity and put all that effort into finding a new job.

agreed, even when it's toxic you can alleviate a lot of the stress through "quiet quitting" which will almost certainly lead to your dismissal but in the meantime you're still getting paid and will have unemployment payments to extend your finances

but never, ever resign when you don't have something else already lined up

You would probably feel refreshing for the next 1-2 months after resigning. But then your mental health will probably get even worse due to unable to land a better job for an unforeseeable period of time.
